2019 IPPE Preceptor of the Year

Trina Buettner

ProMedica Defiance Regional Medical Center

Each year, the PharmD IPPE Class has the opportunity to select the IPPE Preceptor of the Year. This year, the 2019 IPPE Preceptor of the Year is Trina Buettner.

Trina a native of Northwest Ohio and a graduate from the University of Toledo. She has worked in several pharmacy settings before settling in Defiance OH to remain closer to, at that time, aging grandparents. Tri-na is currently the Director of Pharmacy at ProMedica Defiance Re-gional Hospital. Her systems project is sterile product USP compliance. She is active in Rotary Youth Exchange and has multiple internationals she considers a part of her family. Trina enjoys being outdoors and watching TinCaps (single A in Ft. Wayne. IN) baseball.

Over the years, Trina has precepted students from several Ohio Universities and always tries to accommodate them in order for them to complete their experiential hours. Students say “she allows them to work on interesting projects and shows us the business side of the pharmacy as far as scheduling and budgeting”, “She is genuinely interested in our development as a pharmacist”, “When I first arrived at my IPPE, Trina quickly took me under her wing and gave me many opportunities I do not think I would have had elsewhere. I was able to compound products with her supervision, attended P and T committee, and even got to go with her to a Joint Commission accreditation at Bixby hospital”. “She also frequently asked about how I plan to give back to the community and represent pharmacy. These questions really began to turn the wheels on what I really want to do with my career and how I want to impact my community”.

Thank you Trina from The University of Toledo and all the students you have precepted over the years!

2019 APPE Preceptor of the Year Sarah Lorenzen (Continued from page 1)

of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2015, Sarah completed her PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with a heightened focus on managed care and ambulatory pharmacy services. Sarah was hired on after the com-pletion of her residency as the first specialty pharmacist at UTMC. Since then, Sarah and her team have devel-oped a stand-alone specialty pharmacy located within the outpatient clinics that serves our medical specialties, including rheumatology, dermatology, gastroenterology, transplant, and the on-site cancer center located on cam-pus. The UT Access Pharmacy has recently expanded to the UT Comprehensive Care Center, where the pharma-cy team, including students and residents work to provide concierge pharmacy services with a focus on access to both specialty and maintenance medications.

Students state Sarah is “Very engaging and learn a lot about many different medications that one normal-ly wouldn’t come across in every day practice”. “She shows immense compassion for her patients when they came to the pharmacy and did everything she could and more to help people get the very expensive medications that she deals with. “Sarah has a great way of working with students as a preceptor/teacher while still incorporat-ing them fully into the day-to-day pharmacy workflow. Each day I felt as if I was learning something new thanks to being focused on different disease states each week. Sarah showed me many different aspects of how the phar-macy was run and made me feel as if I were a part of the team even though I was only there for a month”.

Thank you Sarah from The University of Toledo and all the students you have precepted over the years!

CoreTrax Updates

A new version of CoreTrax is under development with an anticipated release in late 2019. The cur-rent version uses the Flash as a platform, which has several limitations. The main driver behind the change is to rebuild the software on a non-flash platform. Significant changes are not anticipated in the preceptor interface however, the mobile app will be phased out entirely. Stay tuned for more in-formation regarding the update.

UT CPPS preparing for accreditation visit from Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)

The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences is currently busy preparing for an October accreditation visit from ACPE. ACPE sets forth standards for pharmacy education in the United States. The most current education standards can be found at this link https://www.acpe-accredit.org/pdf/Standards2016FINAL.pdf Each pharmacy school undergoes a 3 day, pre-scheduled site visit from ACPE every 5-8 years. Schools are as-signed a rating of non-compliant, partially compliant, compliant with monitoring or compliant. Current ratings for all US pharmacy schools can be found here: https://www.acpe-accredit.org/pharmd-program-accreditation/ How preceptors are involved in accreditation: Preceptors are a very important part of the accreditation process! Three of the 25 standards are ALL about ex-

periential education because Experiential Education makes up 30% of the PharmD curriculum. Site visitors will be meeting with preceptors for an hour session. If you are interested in participating in this session, please reach out to an Experiential Team member.

Student Spotlight Guatemala: An Experience And An Adventure

by Cassandra Welsh

On June 30th, Dr. Cappelletty, Dr. Howard, Megan Muhleman, and I

left for what would be one of the most educational and fun weeks of my life.

We were heading to Guatemala for the 19th mission with Dr. Richard Paat

and countless other doctors, students,

volunteers, and other medical professionals

to set up clinics in nine different communities.

The clinics are generally set up in churches, schools, or other community

centers in cities chosen by native Guatemalans. They scout locations that they

believe are in the most need and have the space available to hold a clinic. Each

day we split into two teams in order to serve more

communities. Six stations are set up: triage, clinic,

gynecology, dentistry, physical therapy, and pharmacy. The patients start out by

coming into triage where they are given a paper which contains basic information

including name, age, vitals, and chief complaint. From there, they move through each

station ending with pharmacy.

Going on this trip has been different than any other pharmacy experience I

have had because not only have I gone through the entire curriculum, but I was also working in a different

environment than I was used to. While working in the pharmacy station, we had to compound suspensions using

only a pill crusher and Tylenol and ibuprofen suspension. This resulted in me using skills that I hadn’t used in a

while. I also had the opportunity to make real clinical recommendations when I was in the clinic. As a fun bonus

opportunity, I was able to pull teeth in dentistry. It was fun but definitely not something I would pursue.

If you have never been on a medical mission trip, I

highly recommend applying for the mission trip

APPE. Not only will you have the opportunity to

use your pharmacy skills but, you also learn a

greater appreciation for what is available to us in

the US. If you have been on a medical mission trip

before, I still recommend applying. There was

something special about this trip that I didn’t get on

others. The atmosphere that Dr. Paat and the other

on the trip create is full of passion for service of our

fellow man and that is something that can’t be

replicated.

Team members were from Left to Right - Amy Gentry, Cameron Perisutti, Cassie Bicknell, and Rachel DiNino.

Good-Bye & Thank You from

Karen Mockensturm

All:

I wanted to let you know that I will be retiring from The Uni-versity of Toledo on September 30, 2019. It has been a true pleasure working with each and every one of you over the last 8 years and a blessing to have worked at the University of To-ledo for the last 18 years. THANK YOU! You’ve always been so kind and accommodating each time I reached out for you to join a committee, take an additional student on rotation or attend one of our college events. I feel like I’ve come to know many of you on a person-al level and you are all so very special to me. You’ve helped so many of our students to become better pharmacists. I will miss you, the interaction with the students (which I have to

say are the BEST!), being a part of the Experiential Team and The University of Toledo for many years to come.

Wishing you all health & happiness and hoping our paths will cross again soon,

Karen Mockensturm
