There are six new general Cardiology fellows (five of whom will be starting their first clinical year and one starting a research year), one new interventional fellow, and one new electrophysiology fellow.

The New Faces of Cardiology FellowshipNicole Martin Bhave

I grew up in the Detroit area but moved to the East Coast to attend college and medical school at Harvard. I then attended Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) for my Internal Medicine Residency.  While at MGH, I did a pilot research project with Dr. Michael Picard, studying appropriateness of echocardiography on the general medical service.  As a senior resident, I was fortunate enough to spend some time at U of C with Dr. Lang, planning a project in which 3D Echo will be used to examine tricuspid regurgitation in patients with permanent pacers.  I met my husband Rohit Bhave, a Pritzker alum and current U of C anesthesia senior resident, while he was doing his internship in the Boston area.  We have been married for just over two weeks and are looking forward to actually living in the same city for a change.  Outside the hospital, I enjoy writing, singing, and wine tasting.

Mike Broman

I was born in southern Illinois but moved to Chicago when I was 5 years old. I went to high school in the suburbs, and tried to decide between a career in music or medicine.  I finally decided to major in Biochemistry at the University of Iowa, did a lot of basic science research in the Department of Radiology and decided I really liked it.  I came back to Chicago and did my MD and PhD at the University of Illinois. My thesis was on endothelial permeability in response to sepsis and inflammatory stimuli in the Department of Pharmacology.  I started my residency here at the U of C in 2007 and had a hard time deciding between Pulmonary/Critical Care and Cardiology. I finally decided that Cards was the way to go and here I am!  I love the Cubs (just bought a condo near Wrigleyville), grilling out, watching movies, and expanding my music collection.

John Ryan

I grew up in a small town in Tipperary, Ireland and after finishing high school went to medical school at University College Cork. After working in Ireland, I then came to the U.S. to do my internal medicine residency at Boston University Medical Center (BMC). I just finished my Chief Residency at BMC which has been a valuable experience, helped develop my administrative skills, and provided me with an opportunity to attend on the wards for several months. During my time in Boston, I became interested in Vascular Biology and performed research in Endothelial Dysfunction as well as developed my skills as a clinician-educator. I also met my fiancé Jeanna in Boston and we are getting married in the summer of 2010. I also golf, play soccer, and write a column for a medical magazine in Ireland. I am very much looking forward to this next chapter of my life at University of Chicago.

John Shin

I was born in Seoul, Korea but grew up mostly in the suburbs of Richmond, VA with two wonderful parents and an amazing older sister.  My undergrad years were spent at Harvard, where I concentrated in Economics.  After briefly working in NYC as a management consultant, I elected to pursue a career in medicine and moved south for medical school at Vanderbilt.  My zig-zag travels through the U.S. next led me to Chicago for medicine residency at UofC, where I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Parker Ward and Dr. Kim Williams on a study of prone nuclear imaging.   My academic interests are in Cardiac Imaging and Health Economics, and I plan to continue these in fellowship.  Outside of work, I enjoy music (violin, guitar, piano) and sports, and I'll also be getting married to my fiancé Hye-soo during the first month of fellowship.  I look forward to joining the cardiology fellowship program and working with our Section's great faculty and fellows.

Kevin Tsai

I'm originally from Taiwan and moved to the U.S. during elementary school where I grew up in Bethesda, Maryland.  For undergrad, I attended University of Maryland at College Park and majored in Neurobiology and Chemical Engineering.  After graduating, I spent two years at the National Institutes of Health studying Insulin Signaling Pathways.  I then stayed in Maryland to attend the University of Maryland School of Medicine. After medical school, I completed my Internal Medicine Residency training at the University of Virginia.  I am excited to join the Cardiology Fellowship at U of C and look forward to exploring the city of Chicago.

Thenappan Thenappan – Starting a Research Year

I grew up in a small town in Southern India. My passion towards science in high school made me pursue a career in medicine. After completing my medical school and internal medicine residency training in India, I came to the U.S. for additional training. I attended St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois for my internal medicine residency. Since completing my residency in 2005, I have been working as an academic hospitalist at Aurora Health Care and also working with Dr. Gomberg-Maitland and Dr. Rich to creating a single-center registry for pulmonary hypertension. My research project is focused on studying the epidemiology and outcomes of different types of pulmonary hypertension in the current era. I am fortunate and thrilled to be at the University of Chicago for the next phase of my career.

Lakshminarayan Yerra – Interventional Fellow

I attended Louisiana State University and after completing my fellowship, joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Invasive Cardiology in 2007.   I obtained my MD from Mauland Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India and subsequently did an Internal Medicine Residency at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research at Chandigarh, India.  This was followed by a year of Internal Medicine at NHS Trunk Hospitals in the United Kingdom.  I did my Internal Medicine Residency at East Tennessee Medical Center followed by a Research Fellowship in Cardiology with Dr. Scott Solomon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Jose Baez-Escudero – EP Fellow

I attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where I completed my fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease.  I went on to Temple University in Philadelphia where I completed my Internal Medicine Residency and Chief Residency. I’m a professional percussionist and drummer and in 2000, was signed to Universal Music Latin America record label with rock band “Ultravioleta.”

Honors & NotablesHere’s a closer look at some of the impressive work of our fellows in 2008-2009:

Ben Freed was quoted June 2009 in Reuters regarding his American Society of Echocardiography abstract titled, “Lack of Adherence to Guidelines for Severe Aortic Stenosis Leave Symptoms Unidentified and Patients With Life-Threatening Heart Conditions Untreated.”

Ben Freed was awarded second place for his abstract titled, “Lack of Adherence to Guidelines for Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis: Reasons and Potential Solutions,” at the First Annual Cardiovascular Research Day at U of C on June 5, 2009.

Tochi Okwuosa received the CDC Travel Award to attend the AHA sponsored Lake Tahoe Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention Conference.

Jonathan Rich was selected to serve as Fellow Representative on the Cardiology Today Editorial Board.

Jonathan Rich presented “Interesting Cases in Pulmonary Hypertension: Lunch with the Experts” at the ACC 58th Annual Scientific Sessions, March 28-31, 2009.

Jonathan Paul: Successful application for NIH Training Grant (Beth McNally, PI. Jalees Rehman, Project PI) for his project titled, “Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation and Survival in the Myocardium.”

Thenappan Thenappan: Successful application for NIH Training Grant (Beth McNally, PI. Stephen Archer, Project PI) for his project titled, “The Effect of Adeno-Associated Viral Gene Transfer of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Calcium ATPase (SERCA2a) in Pulmonary Artery-Banded Rats with Right Ventricular Failure.”

Teaching Activities

We’d like to thank all of the fellows for participating in the Pritzker School of Medicine CPP course this past year in addition to active participation in the education of our residents and students. Some specific activities include:

Sandra (D’Amore) Weiss lead a tutorial on Acute Coronary Syndrome for CCU Nurses, and also participated as a Fellow Teaching Assistant in the 2009 Senior Selective EKG Workshop at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Ewa Dembowski participated as a lecturer at the 2008-2009 Pritzker School of Medicine Senior Selective.

With Kim Coady transitioning into her new role as a foundation associate for the Cancer Research Foundation at the U of C, administration of the fellowship program is changing. Effective immediately, Bev Armstrong will assume the lead for administering the program with Tisa Williams providing day-to-day clerical support.
