Hiking Observations - looking back over our 2015 Season
Thought I would try to list some of the thoughts I’ve had about this year’s hiking
season.
In Ohio we are so lucky with our seasonal variations. We all enjoy the early
flowers that burst forth magically each Spring as so many of our parks showcase
this yearly rejuvenation. And who cannot but admire the reds and golds reflected
in Hinckley Reservoir as you stride out on a brisk Fall day.
Migrating Warblers in the marshes, turtles sunning on a log, long-legged blue
herons stalking through the shallows, and ducks flying in their V’s overhead re-
mind us of all the life around us that share our parks.
I thought I knew most of the local parks and vistas, and then I’m totally ‘bowled
over’ by an unknown area; case in point the wonderful Crowell-Hilaka Preserve in
Richfield. You’ve got to make this area a ‘must’ in future hike destinations.
If you divide up the responsibilities amongst the participants, everyone stays in-
volved. You end up with a vibrant group, each person having interesting insights
into all sorts of topics.
Guests add a definite ‘zest’ to any outing. It is always great to meet fellow hikers
and learn about their experiences and cultures – case in point our German guests
and frequent hiker Vanessa.
I’ve taken to joking that our hikes should be renamed, “Hike and Eat”. But all
joking aside, how better to round out a hike then to enjoy a meal together in a
wonderful restaurant like the Tavern in Richfield or Fisher’s Tavern in Chagrin.
Suffice it to say that the most anticipated repasts are at the homes of our
members Linda Littler and Penny Marquette. They deserve a heart-felt round of
applause.
Each year we venture out of our immediate vicinity to visit new locales. In June
we visited the home and delightful gardens of master gardener Marge Koosed in
South Euclid. In September we had a wonderful tour at the Wilderness Center in
Wilmot. Even though we have such knowledgeable members in our group, it is
always great to learn from experts about the special sites we are visiting.
So I’ll end as I did last year. “We are truly blessed with wonderful places to walk, and
you all gave so much from gourmet treats to nature insights. Keep walking during the
winter and next spring we’ll reunite for another great season.”
Shaw Festival 2015
The Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake continues to amaze visitors.
This year thirty-three folks traveled together to N-OT-L. Many were new to
our trip and some were new to the Shaw. There were ten members of
UAWC and others joined from years past. Great weather, wonderful plays,
interesting wining and dining and a compatible group of travelers. The
Prince of Wales Hotel almost defies description. The plays next year sound
exciting. Alice in Wonderland will probably be the show stopper. Also on the
schedule are some favorites, Our Town, Mrs. Warren’s Profession and
Engaged are just the beginning. Tentative dates for next year are October
5, 6 & 7, 2016. Plan to join us.
Here are some trip highlights from our UAWC President, Leslie Bain.
“For me in addition to the great hotel, fun shopping, gourmet food and scin-
tillating plays and musicals we've come to expect:
- A fascinating backstage tour which brought to life the sets, the costumes,
the rehearsal process and so much more that goes into making top quality
stage productions.
- A really fun wine tour that several of us took on a gorgeous, sunny after-
noon. After visiting four different wineries that included history of wine mak-
ing in the area as well as seeing the process from field to bottling, we did
lots of wine sampling and of course had ample opportunity to buy our favor-
ites.
- Lunch overlooking the Canadian horseshoe falls at Niagara Falls. It is just
mind-blowing!
- The chance to relax and be pampered to the extreme in the company of
so many good friends and new acquaintances.
- The ambiance of Niagara on the Lake - a truly, flower be-decked, histori-
cal, vibrant destination.
- And finally, a leader in Sylvia Johnson who has everything covered and
thoroughly planned so that we can enjoy it all with nary a worry. She is a
treasure."
