4 | The UC Newsletter
As you can see by our newsletter, there is a wide variety of Club functions throughout the remainder of this very special anniversary year for you to enjoy. Please take these opportunities to mix and mingle with fellow members or entertain friends and colleagues.
On the topic of events, looking back into the minutes of the 1990s, I was reminded of all the newly introduced functions that grew to success and remain on our calendar each year. In the early 90s, we introduced our Easter, Mother’s Day and Holiday Brunches, 4th of July and Celebration on the Grand Fireworks, Prime Rib & Seafood Nights and Wine Tastings. We held our first Art Exhibit in 1991, featuring the work of Gretchen Minhaar, which led up to our current artwork on display by Mic Carlson. To encourage evening usage, it was enlightening to read about the many things we have tried through the years including Fashion Shows,
Derby Days, Book Reviews, Comedy Nights, Travel Series and Tailgater Parties, all without great success but always a learning experience.
We continue our look back at the decades, spotlighting the 1990s, where I found a definite focus on our newly acquired athletic facility and several 10th floor capital expenditures:
- In early 1990, under Presidents Dave Muilenberg and Lynn Francis, we began the task of bringing the two clubs together and convincing the all male membership that adding a women’s locker room was a necessity. After a few controversial meetings, 80% of the membership voted in favor of the undertaking. Today, some will say that getting the guys to begin wearing swimsuits was the biggest issue, but most will say the transition was almost flawless and best for the Club.
- Almost immediately upon taking over the Athletic Facility, we added a laundry facility, refurbished the pool, purchased new equipment and devised a long range plan of a three phase construction project.
- In 1991, a second floor was constructed over its current work out area where a new hot tub, co-ed sauna and the women’s locker room were built. Upon completion, 25 women joined immediately and athletic membership doubled by the end of the year. More than half our members were athletic/dining members compared to only about one third today. With dining business, in particular wedding receptions, growing considerably, there was a need for new kitchen equipment. In 1992, The Club obtained a small amount of additional space from Old Kent Bank to add storage, expand offices, re-design the kitchen and purchase all new equipment.
- Under the Presidencies of Mal Cumming and Mike Ellis, the Club continued to upgrade the athletic facilities throughout the mid 90s and introduced many positive initiatives that remain today. We began offering free parking for evening functions, expanded our reciprocal privileges, discounted initiation fees and introduced various membership drives including our “Paired” category.
- In 1996, the 10th floor entry and dining rooms were refurbished, complete with new lounge furniture, dining room chairs, woodwork and crown molding. Four years later we took over and refinished the former Old Kent/Fifth Third rooms, our present rooms with southern exposure.
- Toward the end of the decade, with more and more women joining the Club and spousal usage growing, it was obvious that the Women’s Locker Room needed expansion. After much discussion, it was decided that the rarely used Squash Court could be divided into two floors. This would allow for sought after work out space on the lower level and the upper portion for an expanded shower and locker room . In addition to this expansion, all three phases of construction were completed by the end of 1999, including a remodel in the Athletic Club Dining Room, under President Mark Smith.
We now know that most of these areas have been completely redone in the last few years and most will agree that the University Club has never looked better. In an effort to maintain the aesthetics of the Club, we continue to complete projects in order of priority. The weekend before Thanksgiving, our Men’s Locker Room vanity, sinks and faucets will be replaced and the pool will be repainted. We are in the planning stages of a total transformation of the kitchen this coming summer with a possibility of preliminary work being done in March. As always, I will keep you up to date on these and any other projects throughout the year.
