Professor Liz Towns-Andrews The UK Research and Innovation Landscape

The UK Research and
Innovation Landscape
• The proportion of its wealth that the UK
spends on research and development has
been stagnant for 15 years and is much
smaller than in similar EU states and rapidly
growing Asian economies.
• According to official statistics, R&D spending
in the UK was 1.7 per cent of gross
domestic product in 2015, and rose by 4 per
cent compared with 2014.
• The EU average is 2 per cent and the figure
is higher for rapidly growing economies
including South Korea and Israel, according
to the Organisation for Economic Co-
operation and Development.
UK’s track record of R&D investment is poor when you
compare us to our global competitors
