The Turtle Times Parents and Carers, Our Mother’s Day stall was a big hit this year with lots of wonderful gifts for students to select from and purchase. I saw some very happy students coming out with their little bag of goodies looking very pleased indeed. Let’s hope all the presents get home to our mums in one piece before the weekend. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this stall so special. A reminder that we promote a ‘Nut Free’ environment and that no nuts, nutella or bars containing nuts should be brought to school. We have a couple of students who have severe nut allergies. We appreciate your full support around this issue. Next week is NAPLAN testing week for all years 3 and 5 students. It is vital that your children attend school next week for this national testing regime. NAPLAN gives a snapshot at a given point in time around Literacy and Numeracy for all students of year 3 and 5 classes (in primary schools) in Australia. This is undertaken in the same week for all schools. This allows us to see how we compare against other jurisdictions, like-schools, regions and within our own school and class cohorts against a standard that is across Australia. Please encourage your child to go to bed at a reasonable hour, eat a healthy breakfast and come to school ready to participate, however they should not be concerned. Please don’t put any extra pressure on your children, just encourage them to do their best as the teachers have prepared them well for these tests so it is just a matter of them getting in and participating. If any child is away during the week there will be a few catch up times allocated to try to provide every opportunity for all students to participate. Currently we are looking for a qualified classroom support person to work in our school for 30 hours per week. If you are interested in this type of work and have a Certificate III or IV in educational support or equivalent please drop your resume in to Marnie Richards or email it through to [email protected] as soon as possible. I am very pleased to note the Transition Reading session for parents on Wednesday night went exceptionally well. The parents who attended all seemed to go away with a refreshed or new understanding of how they can assist their children to start reading. Thanks to everyone who attended, it is great to get involved especially as reading is the schools big focus this year. Also on Wednesday evening the second session of the Triple P, Positive Parenting Program was held. The parents who have taken up this wonderful opportunity are all very impressed and are encouraging us to run another session next semester. This is a part of an email I received from a parent following the first session: We just finished the PPP training session. I'm ecstatic that I made the effort. Em was wonderful, and I felt very comfortable being a parent sharing with other parents. Thanks for the opportunity you set up for us. I'll be telling everyone about PPP. So if you had registered to attend but haven’t been able to, it is not too late. The next session is Wednesday 15 th May at 6.15pm – 8.15pm in the General Purpose/After School Care Room at school. Just pop me an email letting me know you will be attending and I can let Em know to expect some additional parents. WELCOME TO FIFO

The below website has a wealth of information.

http://www.fifofamilies.com.au/

If you have a partner that works on a fly in fly out

basis (FIFO) and you want to connect with others

living the FIFO lifestyle then you are in the right

spot.

By using this site and the services it provides, you will find yourself within a new community. A community of other FIFO families and FIFO partners who know exactly what you are going through when you are home alone; a sole parent or a solo partner, whilst the other parent/partner is away at work. It is here that you will be able to network with other FIFO families and FIFO partners through out Australia and across the world. It is through this network that you will find support, resources, experienced FIFO families and be able to belong to a COMMUNITY!
