NOVEMBER, 2015
Word on the Street Donna Borok Moss, Secretary
Greetings fellow DYCers. It’s hard to believe that our 2015 boating season is coming to an end. It was a pretty awesome and fun year! Our membership is growing, and we now stand at 47 members. We still would love a higher number for membership, so please keep in mind any friends and/or family you think might wish to join our DYC family. And remember that if and when you bring in a new member, and you are the first listed sponsor on their application, that you may qualify for a $300 on your own membership dues. You must request this credit, and certain requirements must be met. Please contact our Treasurer, Renee Trudeau, for more information. With the holidays fast approaching, remember that you can purchase Delta Yacht Club apparel and accessories directly through our special account at Lands’ End. No need for a special password. Visit www.LandsEnd.com/DeltaYachtClub. Our logos are already there for your use. DYC apparel and accessories would make a pretty nice gift in someone’s stocking! And next year, 2016, is DYC’s 75th anniversary! Wow! We are developing a special edition logo that will be available for your use in 2016. And make sure to save Memorial Day weekend for an extra special celebration! As we approach the beginning of the New Year, you will be hearing from me regarding any changes you wish to see in the 2016 Roster as well as what Party Committee you wish to serve on. So be thinking! Of course, if you wish to opt out of party duties, you may do so by paying a $500 opt-out fee. That will appear on your dues statement. I would like to wish you all a very happy holiday season and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year!

WOW - What a wonderful Change of Watch Party last month. The club dining room was elegantly decorated in silver and gold with place settings and wine glasses filling the tables. The wine auction was fiercely competitive, with bids coming from all corners of the French Room. Hors d'oeuvres and dinner were fantastic. Zippy and her committee deserve, and received, a big ovation for a spectacular evening. The new Tule Island sound system was unleashed Friday and Saturday nights leading to singing and dancing with the French Room rockin' and rollin'. The DYC rendition of "American Pie" deserves an appoint-ment with a recording studio. In case you have not heard: Big news came out of the combined Board meeting held Saturday. Gary McClenahan is joining the Bridge as Vice Commodore. A pleasant surprise and needed boost for all of us. Also, Norm Pennington has been added as a Director. Both are great additions to a strong team. Another announcement from Saturday evening, and one you will want to mark on your calendar: Next year's Memorial Day Party will have a dual theme of our Memorial Day observation plus DYC's 75th Anniversary celebration. Founded in 1941 ... Oops . . . more on that later. But mark those calendars. When you see my name pop up on your phone's caller ID, it's safe to answer... we have members who have stepped up and all parties for next year have chairs and co-chairs. The plans I have heard so far are exciting. 2015 has been a great year for DYC with an increasing membership and a strong budget. Revenue from the parties, the bar and cruise-ins have a big impact. Your help and participation are needed for our continued success. And speaking of success, what a great job Kirk has done this year. It has been super working with him this year and last. The close friendship we have built since both joining at an Open House in 2012, I will cherish forever. Hope to see you all at the Island soon.

Several DYC members are finishing up the year
with a successful road to recovery:
As many of you know, Jerry Pierce (Enamorada)
had an operation to insert stints at the beginning of
the year. Almost immediately after that surgery,
Jerry needed a pacemaker to keep his heart in
check. It took time to dial in the right “pace” but
now, he’s feeling much better and ready to go.
Bill Krumlinde (Granada) was diagnosed with a
clogged carotid artery. No symptoms but, after a
series of tests, a smart doctor was able to make the
diagnosis and Bill was moved into surgery. As
we’re all aware, early diagnosis is key to good
health. Today, Bill is looking and feeling great.
He’s moved on to bigger and better things,
although not any more important things, than the
blessings of good health.
Karen Novosel (Happy Ours) continues to struggle
with her back but she’s not letting that get in her
way. Not only has she been working hard on back
exercises to ease the pain, she’s been at the gym
almost every day to keep herself physically fit.
She’s been quite the trooper this year.
Recently, Karen Lile (Karen J II) and Nancy de
l’Etoile (Brave Duck) had hip replacement surgery.
Fortunately, they have both made a full recovery.
They were seen, effortlessly, walking down the
docks and even swaying to the beat of the music
during the Change of Watch in October. Everyone
was delighted to see them on the island in good
spirits and pain free.
During this summer, Carol Pastorino (Genuine
Draft) came walking up the DYC ramp with a slight
limp. It was great to see her! Carol and Paul
hadn’t been boating and out to the island in almost
a year. As it turned out, Carol severely injured her
ankle by turning slightly and falling directly on it.
Ouch! She’s had a long recovery but, to make up
for lost time, she’s back to cruising on the Bay and
Delta, as much as possible.
Finally, but certainly not least, our beloved Staff
Commodore Fred Flinn (Joan Marie) went in for
knee replacement surgery last week. Reports
have it that Fred’s surgery was successful and he
was out of bed and walking almost immediately
after the surgery. (These doctors do like to keep
us moving.) Currently, Fred is in physical therapy
to help build strength and flexibility in his new
knee. Apparently, his therapy treatments can take
up to four months but hopefully, the doctors will
prescribe a few cruises to DYC, in the meantime.
And it was just learned that Bill Atthowe (Delta
DreamR) will have had knee replacement surgery
by the time you read this. Bill has suffered enough
knee issues, and let’s hope this helps solve the
problem!
It’s now time to go to press! But please watch this
space for more Sunshine News. If you know of
any members who may need a bit of sunshine in
their lives or if you have good news you’d like to

Ingredients
2 1/2 (14.5 oz) cans chicken broth (4 1/2 cups)
1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes
3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion
4 cloves garlic, pressed through a garlic crusher

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1 (14.5 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 1/2 cups frozen or canned corn
1 Tbsp fresh lime juice
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Chicken Tortilla Soup
As winter approaches, and the nights turn chilly, you may wish to consider whipping up a batch of some nice hot soup! This is a favorite of ours; serve with a green salad and a side of corn tortillas, and you’ve got a delicious cold winter’s night meal. Cooking this up in a crock pot or slow cooker makes this an easy to do recipe. Allow about 5-6 hours for cooking time. You can be flexible with the ingredients . . . play with the spices . . . make it as mild or as spicy as you like!
For serving:
Tortilla strips or tortilla chips
Shredded cheddar or monterey jack cheese
Diced avocado, diced roma tomatoes, sour cream,
lime wedges (optional)
Directions
Pour chicken broth and diced tomatoes into a slow
cooker. Add onion, garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, coriander and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add chicken breasts then cover with lid and cook on LOW heat 6 hours, or until chicken is cooked through.
Remove chicken and shred, then return to slow
cooker along with black beans, corn, cilantro and lime juice, stir. Allow to cook until heated through.
