Earth's pole aligns with different pole stars throughout its precessional period. Polaris is Earth's current north-pole star. Earth's ~25,000- year precessional cycle is also referred to as "Earth's Great Year." 1

Earth's precession
Earth 's polar axis precesses very s lowly over a per iod of about
23,000 to 26,000 years . The term precession s imply refers to a change
in the direct ion of the axis of a rotat ing object . As this occurs , the
pole of the Earth inscr ibes an arc in the heavens cal led the

Precession of the Equinoxes
Because Earth 's axis is t i l ted 23° 27 ' with respect the plane
created by Earth 's orbi t around the Sun ( the ecl ipt ic plane) , Earth 's
equatoria l plane (green) is a lso t i l ted at this same angle with respect
to the ecl ipt ic plane (blue) . These two intersect ing planes (Earth 's
equatoria l plane and the ecl ipt ic plane) create an intersect ing l ine in
the ecl ipt ic cal led the vernal axis . Looking from Earth, we see one
point a long this axis lying in one direct ion in the ecl ipt ic , and the
other lying in the opposi te direct ion. One point is the locat ion in the
ecl ipt ic where we see the sun on the March equinox. This locat ion is

the vernal point (VP). The other point is the locat ion where the sun
resides on the September equinox. This is the ant i -vernal point .
As Earth 's pole precesses , so to does Earth 's equatoria l plane and
subsequent ly the vernal axis (moving in a counter-clockwise motion) .
Thus, the vernal axis ( the vernal equinox points) move around the
ecl ipt ic a t a ra te of precession, which is current ly measured to be
about 1° in 72 years , making one complete cycle in about 23,000-
26,000 years . The precessional movement of the vernal points is
cal led the "Precession of the Equinoxes."
The Cause of Precession
Although this ar t ic le is not about the "cause" of Earth 's precession,
i t i s appropriate to ment ion that Earth 's precession is not ful ly
understood and there is more than one hypothesis as to i ts cause. The

simplest reason for Earth 's precession, a l though an assumption, is the
reason that is most commonly known. This model explains that the
Earth 's pole wobbles over a very long period of t ime, much l ike a
rapidly spinning top 's axis wobbles a t a much s low rate than i ts spin.
Another model is the "Binary Star Model" hypothesized by astrophysics
researcher Walter Crut tenden; e t . a l . Al though the reason for our Sun to
move in a curved path may not be ful ly understood, and there may be
unknown causes for i t , he and his team hypothesize that the solar path 's
curvature is caused by a binary s tar model , where our sun and another
sun orbi t each other . Astronomer Glen W. Deen proposes a Ternary Star
System (our sun with two other suns) . Independent of the cause, the
precession of Earth 's pole and that of the vernal axis with respect to the
s tars s t i l l occurs .

The Ayanamsa @ 2000 AD can be used to convert t ropical
longi tudes to s idereal longi tudes. For example i f your Sun resides a t 0°
00 ' 00" Aries (exact ly on the vernal point) subtract 24° 44 ' 12" to get
your sun 's s idereal locat ion using the Fagan-Bradley ayanamsa. Or
subtract 25° 00 ' 00" to get your sun 's s idereal locat ion using the
Galact ic Ayanamsa.
A quick and s imple shortcut to this is to add 5° and drop back a
s ign; i .e . , i f your t ropical Ascendant is 9° 00 ' s idereal Pisces (add 5° ,
minus one s ign) . Your s idereal ASC is 14° 00 ' s idereal Aquarius . This
is t rue for charts cast around 2000 AD. Remember, an ayanamsa
changes over t ime at the ra te of precession. The chart l is ts ayanamsa for
two epcohs: 1950 and 2000 A.D.
** The Delta f igure can be used to convert s idereal longi tudes
calculated with one ayanamsa to the Galact ic Ayanamsa. For example,
i f you have a computer program that calculates your sun to be at 15° 03 '
s idereal Taurus (a l igning with Aldebaran) using the Fagan-Bradley
ayanamsa, you can subtract ~ 00° 16 ' ( - 00° 15 ' 48") to get the Sun's
locat ion at 14° 47 ' using the Galact ic Ayanamsa.
Precessional Time is NOT a Constant

To further compound the problem of zodiakal reckoning, we must
recognize that the ra te of Earth 's precession is NOT a constant . I t i s
accurate to say the las t erect precessional cross had occurred exact ly
180° degrees ago in the precessional cycle , but we can only est imate
that to have been 9,000 to 13,000 years ago. The rate of precession may
vary over long periods of t ime, or even osci l la te around some harmonic
ideal . There are many cont inuously changing astronomical factors that
affect the ra te of precession, not to ment ion the cause of the
precessional of the equinoxes is not even clear . (Just as we can not
pinpoint a date in the dis tant past is why I suggest man-made calendars
made in ant iqui ty fa l l short of being able to predict future evolut ionary
changes to a specif ic date . )
"The Great World Cycle ," or "Earth 's Great Year ," as Earth 's
precessional cycle is sometimes cal led, is es t imated to be between
22,000 and 26,000 solar years--of ten rounded to the la t ter f igure. The
25,920 f igure, of ten seen, is a natural harmonic ideal found in quantum
math. Another quantum number of s ignif icance is 22,680, qui te c lose to
the 23,000 f igure. These are a l l academic f igures however: Earth 's
current ra te of precession is calculated to be ~25,867 years , and i t i s
s l ight ly increasing. This is about 1° every ~71.85 years , or 0° 00 '
50.26" per year .
Walter Crut tenden, in his binary s tar model , suggests our binary
sun 's average orbi ta l per iod is 24,000 years , with i t s lowing to 22,000
years or less a t the binary orbi t ' s apoapsis and increasing to 26,000
years a t i ts per iapsis . This model appropriate ly recognizes an ever
changing precessional ra te .
