Home of the Month
Congratulations to Jenny Ness at 370 Tampico Dr. on being
nominated for July’s “Home of the Month”. Jenny takes pride in her
yard and puts a lot of work into planting flowers to give it that
extra special touch.
Meet Your New NeighborsBy Cindy Shaw
Patricia JoNes, who likes to be called Patsy, originally moved
from Branford, CT in 1994 to Bradenton, FL, but will now be living
full-time at 6 Flores Dr. Patsy’s son, Lou, is a Bradenton City
firefighter who lives in Palmetto Point. When Patsy decided to
retire, she wanted to move closer to him. Loving the water, she
drove around the area and discovered Tropic Isles. She also has a
son, Tim, who lives in CT and a daughter, Tracey, who resides in
MA. She has 6 grandchildren—Ali (15) and Julia (21) live in
Florida; Francesca (10) and Leonardo (8) live in CT; and Tyler (24)
and Samantha (21) live in MA. She has 2 great-grand-daughters from
Julia-- Lilly (1 ½) and Laia (8 mos.). Patsy retired from working
as an Executive Administrative Assistant for the Barnes Walker law
firm in Bradenton. She en-joys spending time at the pool and doing
water aerobics. She is a social being and enjoys riding her
tricycle around the park. Peanut Butter, or PB as he is
affectionately called, is her 2-year old tortoise shell cat who is
very friendly, (but he hates to sit on your lap). Please give a
warm, Tropic Isles welcome to Patsy and PB.
I’d like to introduce you to our new neighbors, DoN and FerNice
Passero, at 115 Capri Dr. They are originally from Queens, NY, but
have lived the past 30 years in Rockland County. They will make
their full-time home in Tropic Isles. Don and Fernice have two
daughters, Denise (57) and Dawn (53) and two granddaughters,
Carmine (22) and Ginamarie (17). Fernice is a hairdresser and Don
worked as an auto mechanic for 3 years before becoming a
hairdresser too. After living on Florida’s Palm Coast for 23 years
to be near family, they decided it was time to try out the West
Coast after those family members left. They have additional family
in Bradenton, so it was a natural decision to move here. They
checked on the Jacobson Homes website and were directed to Tropic
Isles where they decided to build a new home. Don loves to fish and
Fernice is quite handy at needlepoint and crochet. Please welcome
Don and Fernice to our lovely tropical paradise!

Here’s What’s Happening in tropic isles!
On May 26, residents gathered for our first annual “planting
of the flags” at the Yacht Club followed by a potluck
dinner.
The Roseate Spoonbills gather in greater num-bers at “Bird
Island” and can be seen here gathering during the day at the
pond.
(submitted by Tina Woulf)
The June Potluck was well-attended and great food was shared by
all. A movie was shown after the dinner.
The afternoon showers have begun and the sunsets after the storm
are excep-tionally beautiful. This one was taken by Tina Woulf from
the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
A new door was installed in the
Yacht Club sep-arating the Main
Room from the second entrance to allow for more
privacy during meetings, etc.
New blue recycle cans were placed in the Yacht Club and
Auditorium to en-courage the recycling of plastic.
A privacy screen and sign were purchased to provide a quiet area
for yoga and other events.

Laughter is the Best Medicine! A married couple in their early
60s was celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet,
romantic little restaurant. Suddenly, a tiny, yet beautiful fairy
appeared on their table. She said, “For being such an exemplary
married couple and for being loving to each other for all this
time, I will grant you each a wish.” The wife answered, “Oh, I want
to travel around the world with my darling husband.” The fairy
waved her magic wand and –poof! Two tickets for the Queen Mary II
appeared in her hands. The husband thought for a moment. “Well,
this is all very roman-tic, but an opportunity like this will never
come again. “I’m sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30
years younger than me.” The wife and the fairy were deeply
disappointed, but a wish is a wish, so the fairy waved her magic
wand and poof! The husband became 92 years old. The moral of the
story: Men should remember that fairies are female. Be careful what
you wish for.
I’ve finally reached the Wonder Years!I wonder where I parked my
car.I wonder where I left my phone.I wonder where my glasses
are.
I wonder what day it is.
An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was
getting time the boy should give some thought to choos-ing a
profession. Like many young men his age, the boy didn’t really know
what he wanted to do, and he didn’t
seem too concerned about it. One day, while the boy was away at
school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the
boy’s room and placed on his study table four objects:
1. A Bible 2. A silver dollar3. A bottle of whiskey4. A
Playboy magazine
“I’ll just hide behind the door,” the old preacher said to
himself. “When he comes home from school today, I’ll see which
object he picks up. “If it’s the Bible, he’s going to be a preacher
like me, and what a blessing that would be. “If he picks up
the dollar, he’s going to be a businessman, and that would be okay,
too. “But if he picks up the bottle, he’s going to be a no-good
drunk-en bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be. “And worst of
all, if he picks up the magazine, he’ll be a wom-anizer all his
life!” The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son’s
foot-steps as he entered the house whistling and heading for his
room. The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to
leave the room, he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity
in his eye, he walked over to inspect them. Finally, he
picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the
silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle
and took a big drink, while he admired the magazine’s
centerfold. “Lord have mercy,” the old preacher disgustedly
whispered. “He’s gonna run for Congress.”

Palmetto Police Local Number – 941-721-2000, eXteNsioN 4
Many Tropic Isles’ snowbirds have headed north and as our
population decreases the incidents of pool trespassers, theft, and
vandalism may increase. Please remember our local Palmetto Police
are very prompt in their response time if we call them, but they
can be delayed if you dial 911 on your cell phone, especially if
your cell phone is out of state. Please add the local police
number, 941-721-2000, ext. 4 into your cell phone and do not
hesitate to call and report suspicious activity.
Business trespass Program Over the summer and at other times
throughout the year, we have problems in the pool area with
non-residents. The police have been called. The issue of
non-residents on the property has been an on-going problem. The
Palmetto Police Department has developed a program to help us at
Tropic Isles. On June 19, 2018 we enrolled in this program, the
Business Trespass Program. You may have noticed the signs that went
up at the entrances on 28th Ave. and Aloha Dr., the pool, Office,
and peninsula. These signs are part of the program. The program
works this way. if you see a non-resident who you believe is
trespassing, call the police. Do Not coNFroNt tHeM. The police will
come out to Tropic Isles and determine if they are in the “Trespass
database”. If they are, they will be immediately arrested. If not,
they will be given a warning and placed in the Trespass database.
If they are caught on the property another time, they will be
arrested. Our participation in this program prevents the need to
file a complaint each time a trespass occurs. It also raises the
awareness level of non-residents of the seriousness of their
actions. A non-resident is a person who has not been invited to be
on the property by a resident of Tropic Isles. The police are
well-trained and can spot a person lying to them. Again, please do
not confront these people. You never know who is violent. Call the
police!
after-Hours emergencies If you see something that requires
immediate attention (i.e. broken water pipe, red light on the lift
station flashing, sewer, or electrical issues, trespassers, etc.),
but it is after the hours that the Tropic Isles’ Office is open,
please call 941-721-8888. This is the tropic isles’ answering
service for after-hours emergencies. You will be connected to an
actual person who will place a call to the Manager or Maintenance
Staff person on-call to handle the situation. Please leave your
name, so you can be contacted if they have any questions.
codereD The City of Palmetto has contracted with OnSolve to
license its CodeRED high-speed notification solution. The CodeRED
system provides City officials the ability to quickly deliver
messages to targeted areas or the entire city. This system is only
as good as the telephone number database supporting them. One of
the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it gives individuals
and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly
into the system’s database. This is an extremely important feature.
No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is
included and we urge all individuals and businesses to log onto the
city website, www.palmettofl.org and look for the link to
the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page. Those
with-out Internet access may call City Hall at 941-723-4570, Monday
through Friday, (8AM-5PM) to supply their information over the
phone. Required information includes first and last name, street
address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code,
and primary phone number, Additional phone numbers can be entered
as well. All businesses should register, as well as all individuals
who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone
number or address within the past year, and those who use a
cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number. CodeRED
allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses
are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by
the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for
cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address
to provide relevant messages. CodeRED gives those who want to be
included an easy and secure method for in-putting information. The
data collected will only be used for emergency notification
purposes. At time of enrollment, you can also determine if you want
to be notified of other non-emergency events in the City. Please
direct questions to City Hall at 941-723-4570.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors(NHN)
NHN will continue throughout the summer to help with any
resident needs. Our volunteers will aid residents with
various jobs including weeding, yard work, power washing, clearing
carports, simple maintenance jobs, and compliance issues. Specific
reasons for our help include illness, aging, financial
difficulties, or just to lend a helping hand. We have compiled a
list of vendors and various agencies that can also offer help and
guidance. Check out our bulletin board in the Auditorium where we
list them. Call the people listed below or the Office personnel for
help.

turtle Nesting season Turtle nesting season officially began on
May 1 and continues through October 31. Five species of sea turtles
inhabit Flor-ida’s waters, though only 3 species nest on Florida’s
beaches. When visiting Florida
beaches during this time, it is not unlikely that you will see
areas marked or roped off where a sea turtle nest is. Sea turtles
are pro-tected by the Florida State Statutes, Chapter 370.12. Most
beaches where they nest have a “lights out” policy after a
specified time to prevent the sea turtles from going toward the
lights. Female turtles return to the beaches where they were born
to build nests, lay their eggs, and return to the ocean. Sea
turtles can lay several nests in one season, in each nest laying
approximately 100 eggs. The female covers the eggs with sand and
then leaves the eggs to incubate for 2 months. The temperature of
the nest actually determines the sex of the turtles. When the eggs
hatch, the hatchlings race toward the water. The journey is
extremely dangerous, and according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy,
only an estimated one in 1,000 to 10,000 sea turtles survives to
adulthood. During nesting season, it is important to keep local
waters and beaches sea-turtle friendly. Sea turtles are swimming
just offshore to mate before the females come ashore to nest.
Juvenile turtles are feeding along the Gulf Coast and by early
summer the first hatchlings will venture into Gulf waters. On the
nesting beaches, light from waterfront properties can disorient
nesting female turtles and their young, which emerge at night and
use dim natural light to find the sea. Also, beach furniture,
animals, trash, and other obstacles can impede sea turtles and
their young. Mote Marine encourages coastal residents and visitors
to follow the turtle-friendly tips below during nesting season, May

emergency contacts If you see a sick, injured, or stranded sea
turtle in Sarasota or Manatee County waters, contact Mote Marine
Laboratory’s Stranding Investigations Program at 941-988-0212.
Outside of Sarasota or Manatee Counties, please call the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at 888-404-FWCC
(3922). If you suspect that someone is tampering with a sea turtle
nest, harassing a sea turtle, or has possession of a sea turtle or
any of its parts, please call FWC, call your local sheriff’s
department, and/or call Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research
Program at 941-388-4331. If you find sea turtle hatchlings that are
not on the beach or are headed away from the ocean, call Mote’s Sea
Turtle Conservation and Research Program for instructions. Put
rescued hatchlings into a bucket with a layer of damp sand and
cover the bucket with a towel. Do not put hatchlings in water or
take them into air conditioning. Hatchlings heading towards the
ocean should be left alone. Sea turtles are protected under federal
law and any harassment or interference with a sea turtle, living or
dead, is subject to penalty.

Have you checked your tie-downs in your carport?
On older homes, it is important to secure your carport tie downs
before leaving for the season or when high winds are predicted.
Bring the pole down in your carport and attach it into the driveway
bolt. Make sure it’s secure into the ground. Many home owners have
done away with the original roof hold down base because it was a
tripping hazard. It might be too hard to install the connecting
pipe. If you need information on how to install a new system for
holding down your carport roof, please contact the Office for
directions. Make sure it is done on both ends of your carport.
~~to all tropic isles’ residents~~ Please take the time to
properly pre-pare your homes and yards for hurricane season. It is
unfair to ask or expect those who remain in Tropic Isles to tend to
your homes, when they could be using that
time to prepare themselves for whatever Mother Nature has in

Fish on! Doug Woulf caught this (out-of-season) 22” red snap-per
in late May in the Tampa Bay channel. He says he usually has to go
a long way offshore to find one this size.
John Stubbs and Tom Hennessy went out fish-ing near Rattlesnake
Point. John caught a Snook approx. 7 lbs. in weight. 5 were
caught and released.
Tina Woulf’s little brother, Larry Seeley, was visiting from
Lakeland, FL. He was out back fishing and enjoying the sunset with
Doug Woulf and “Big Blue”! It was a catfish night with one
catfish after another and only 2 man-grove snappers in total caught
by her brother Larry! They kept nothing.
stories in the spotlight! Spring has finally come to the
Northland at the end of May. The average high temp is running about
70 degrees which is a little cool for this time of year. Due to our
late arrival and lousy weather, the Coldfront is still not ready to
be launched. Last week, we placed sandbags and pumps to
protect our Marina buildings from high water. (See attached photo.)
We added another level of bags because the water was expected to go
up another 4”. A strong Northwind could push the water up another
foot. My back has still not recuperated from the last work
party. We don’t get the heat and storms you do in Florida,
but “every port of refuge has its price.” Our club has 41 racing
events planned for this summer. I plan to do about 30 of
them. See you in the fall.
John Castellana from Scottsville, NY
summer travels Tina Woulf visited her
daughter, Christina, in Cali-fornia on June 8. (Christina is
getting married in California on July 14). One of their ex-
cursions was to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Fun
times!
In June, Doug and Tina Woulf at-tended their nephew’s “weekend
long, “Woodstock theme” wed-ding in Boulder Creek, CA in the
beautiful redwoods.
The only way to cross the street in your bare feet in
Florida.
