Mother Angie's Musings

September 2018

This summer I set myself the goal of reading the Harry Potter series. I had never read the

books but I had recently heard of a book that seeks to teach children and teenagers about

our faith using themes and events in the book. This concept intrigued me as I am always

looking for ways to help translate what can often be very difficult concepts into more

manageable terms. In so many ways, this is exactly what Jesus did using parables to speak

to the people about God and God’s kingdom.

I enjoy fantasy stories and I have found the books to be truly engaging and the characters

well developed. What I have found most valuable is the development of Harry and his

friendships with Hermione and Ron. The relationships go through the ups and downs that

so many of us find throughout our lives. They go through periods of intense growth and

periods of intense disagreement, even to the point of not speaking to each other for a time.

And though the three of them have a unified friendship, Harry has a distinctly unique

relationship with each of them. Each of them also has unique gifts and abilities and when

they are together, the sum of their gifts is so much greater than any one of them

individually.

In so many ways, these relationships echo the realities of life as part of the Body of Christ.

We, like Harry and the wizarding world, face a world which has been infiltrated by evil

which seeks to control everything and everyone. And though at times it seems like evil is

not only winning but will be victorious, there is a force that cannot be underestimated in its

ability to combat evil – love. It is the self-sacrificing love of his mother that provided

salvation from death for Harry as a child and set him apart as one who had a unique ability

and destiny to fight evil. It is the self-sacrificing love of God that has given us salvation

from eternal death and a unique ability and destiny to fight evil through that love. Just as

Harry was marked forever with his lightning bolt shaped scar by that self-sacrificing love,

so we are also marked through our baptism with the sign of the cross. In that moment, we

are marked as Christ’s own forever. We are forever changed and have a new destiny to

join God on his mission to free the world of sin and evil through the power of love.

It is this destiny of loving transformation that continues to draw us

out of the church building and into the world. Just as Harry, Ron, and

Hermione had to leave the safety of their classrooms and journey into

unknown parts of the castle or the world outside of Hogwarts, so we

are also called to leave the comfort of our pews and seek out where

the Spirit of God is working to set people free of the bonds of sin. We

must sometimes make risky decisions that do not make logical sense,

but that our hearts tell us are the next step in what God is asking of

us. We will not always (or more likely, hardly ever) see the bigger

picture of how this moment and this step fits into the larger picture of

God’s plan, but just as Harry trusts that Dumbledore knows why he

sets the tasks he does, we need to trust that God knows that whole

story.

In that final battle, Harry shows the depth of his love as he chooses to

face death in order to save the world from Voldemort, even though

there is no guarantee of success. It is that love and sacrifice that

Voldemort still cannot comprehend because evil puts self-

preservation before all else. It is that self-centeredness that only God

can and did overcome through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Alt-

hough the final victory has been won, the battle continues because

there are places that have not yet heard the Good News and Death

Eaters (those who choose to be on the side of evil) are still trying to

convince people that evil still has a chance to win. So let us take our

rightful places in the Order of the Phoenix (those who devote them-

selves to fighting evil), joining together like Harry, Ron, and Hermi-

one, combining our strengths and leaning on each other in our weak-

nesses.

Let us take risks, spread the Good News, and watch as God’s Love

transforms the world.

Trinity Offers More Opportunities to Worship Each time we pray the Lord’s Prayer we pray that God’s Kingdom will come on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Yet all you have to do is turn on the news to see how far from that reality we are right now. As

Christians, we are called to live our Baptismal vows each day. We work and fight for social justice and

the dignity of each human being. It is hard work and it can be discouraging when we see the magnitude

of what is still to be done. That is one of the many reasons that it is so crucial for us to ground every-

thing that we do in prayer and worship. In response to the growing needs of our community to expand

our outreach and justice ministries, we will also be expanding our worship opportunities.

• Morning Prayer is held on Thursday mornings at 9:00 am in St Martha’s house.

Morning Prayer is an ancient prayer service which takes about 15 minutes and

connects us to God and each other as we begin our day centered on God and God’s call

to us.

• A Dinner-Eucharist is held on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm in the

Parish House. Come join us for a delicious dinner as we discuss Bible

readings and celebrate the Eucharist together. All ages are welcome

and encouraged to attend and participate.

Get To Know Your Fellow

Parishioner: by Allen Francis

I have spent my working life as an Operating Engineer and a member of Local 25, Marine

Division serving as its Recording-Corresponding Secretary, a Trustee of its Benefit Plans and

as a Business Representative. By trade I was a USCG licensed tug boat operator working on

many port dredging, beach replenishment, bridge construction and other marine construction projects, Also, I served as

Secretary-Treasurer of the Hudson County Central Labor Council and served as Labor Chair of the New York Distinct,

US Corps of Engineers Dredging Advisory Committee.

By being Baptized in St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Tauton, Mass In 1941, I am a cradle Episcopalian. For many

reasons I will not go into, my mother, an Irish Roman Catholic, married my father at St, Thomas Church in 1935.

After my family moving to Woodbridge From Queens, NY in 1955, my mother, who never was a religious person,

gravitated to Trinity Church becoming a very active member of St. Anne’s Unit. In 1958. My mother thought it would

be a very good idea if my sisters and myself were confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Not knowing how to, or should I

say afraid, to say no to my mother, we took lessons from Father Schmaus and were confirmed by Bishop Van Duzer.

In 1963 I married Norma Dossena in St. James Roman Catholic and after our three children were born and baptized in

the Roman Catholic Church, I became the perfect pew sitter with absolutely no interest in organized Religion.

After many years and for many reasons, Norma became disenchanted with the Catholic Church. It was only after our

daughter was married in Trinity Church and our Grandchildren were Baptized and attending Mass at Trinity did she

return to a Church. She became Directress of our Altar Guild, Coordinator of our Food Pantry and Chair of the St.

Anne’s Christmas Sale until her death in 2016. My mother in law, a very devout Roman Catholic was thrilled and

delighted that Norma had returned the Church but mused “but God it was the wrong Church”.

I started to attend Trinity because my Grandchildren were active in the Choir. After my retirement in 2005 I was

looking for something useful to fill the hours, I volunteered to become the Editor of the Trinity Herald. A task I did at

Local 25 for many years.

Subsequently, Fr. Counselman asked me to volunteer my time as a Eucharistic Minister and Visitor. He encouraged

me run for a seat on the Vestry, where I became the Clerk. He must have seen something in me that I could not see.

Surprisingly, this Ministry opened an avenue of spirituality that I never knew existed. I encourage all search their souls

and answer the call as a Eucharistic Minister or serve as a Member of the newly formed Mission Committee

(The Vestry). You just might a find a spiritually you never knew you had and you just might enjoy the “ride”.

Over the last several years, Trinity has become my spiritual home and the Parishioners have become my extended fam-

ily. I pray that it is the same with you.

On a very personal note, when Norma suddenly passed away more than two years ago, the outpouring of grief and

Friendship was overwhelming and a great comfort to me. Besides my family, Mother Angie and the Parishioners of

Trinity Parish have sustained me and kept me going.

I thank you all.

Yes, our Parish is facing difficult time, but if we face the future together, we will be looking out a bright future.

Remember: I am Trinity, You are Trinity, We are Trinity Together

Corner The Great Myth

Jesus said: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses

their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25). This is the opposite of what our

culture teaches us. We are inundated by advertisements that lure us into believing

in the myth of “getting” - a cultural myth that happiness, security, and

contentment are found in material assets and personal accomplishments.

What is the American Dream? It is a mantra that says: “Get all you can, save all you can, and spend the

rest.” It is a philosophy by which most of us live, and is a greedy obsession that is all about accumulating

wealth at any cost.

But isn’t our lives more then the things we have acquired and our accomplishments. Jesus said just the

opposite: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).The people who really own

this world are those who the world cannot own; they are not owned by what they have.

The "getting” myth is our culture’s great lie. Getting money, and having power have become the American

Dream. But it is a lie that having money means you have a life. We borrow money we don't have, use credit

cards to buy things we don’t need, to keep up with people we don't even like.

Jesus said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). The life that we want will be found in

only one way – in giving. You and I came into this world with nothing, and we will leave the same way.

From our conception, everything we have has been given to us. It's all been provided from God through

those who love and care for us. What then is the real purpose in the life of a Christian? Our life is found in

one way, through giving.

Your congregation’s stewardship committee has again selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship

Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving. New Consecration

Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What

percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” We will encourage participation in Consecration

Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team, your Stewardship Committee, coming in November.

Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.

“A Bumper Crop for Christ” by Tina Chaves

The Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the changing leaves, crisp air,

and all the harvest décor, such as the pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks.

And I can’t forget about the hot apple cider and candy corn!!! It’s a fun

time, a time to celebrate with a harvest theme in mind. Which leads me to Matthew 9:35 through 38. Jesus

is preaching the Good News in all the towns and villages, and upon seeing the crowds so eager to hear and

follow him, he feels compassion for them, because they seemed to him to be like sheep without a shepherd.

In his compassion, he says to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord

of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” (Matthew 9:37b-38, NIV). Jesus is

saying that there are so many people that still need to hear the good news of the Kingdom and bear spiritual

fruit in their lives, but there aren’t enough people willing and able to share this good news, thus preventing

“seeds” from being planted.

The harvest is indeed plentiful, more so than ever! This hurting world needs the healing power of the

Gospel! There are so many ways to get that message out there, the message that God loves everyone and

offers forgiveness and salvation through His Son. I believe our parish is doing just that. The many ways

that we are reaching out to the community demonstrates the radical love of Jesus Christ. Whether it be the

soup kitchen, food pantry, Diaper Bank, Family Promise, and our other outreach and fund-raising

programs and events, all of these are ways to bring in a bountiful harvest! When people see Christ’s love in

action, they will respond…and in a huge way!

What a blessing it is to know that we all can do our part in bringing in a “bumper crop” for Christ through

stewardship. Our parish life and outreach does require financial help from our parishioners. Each year, we

pledge a portion of our income so that, in a nutshell, our community may receive the message of God’s

love and salvation offered to us all. We truly are the workers in God’s harvest field!

Let’s use this time of year to get excited about what God is doing in our community through the Trinity

Episcopal Church!!! Be as generous and as good a steward as you can, knowing that God is at work within

us and within our parish to bring in a bountiful harvest that will last for all eternity! God bless you all…

Diaper Need Awareness Week

What is Diaper Need Awareness Week?Diaper Need Awareness Week is an initiative created by the National Diaper Bank Network to bring national attention and mobilize efforts to end diaper need, a hidden consequence of poverty.Individuals, health professionals, community groups, and others can use this week to sponsor events and stimulate awareness of health issues related to diaper need.

The goals include:• Raise awareness and support efforts to educate people about diaper need, including risk factors and related repercussions • Encourage people and interested groups and organizations to observe and support Diaper Need Awareness Week through appropriate programs and activities to promote public awareness of, and potential solutions for, diaper need

What Is Diaper Need? The lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy.

Fast Facts• 5.2 million Children in the U.S. aged three or younger live in poor or low-income families. • 1 in 3 American families’ reports experiencing diaper need. • Diapers cannot be obtained with food stamps. • Disposable diapers cost $70 to $80 per month per baby.• No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers.• Without transportation, buying diapers at a convenience store rather than a large “big box” store can significantly increase the monthly cost of diapers.• Infants require up to 12 diapers per day, toddlers about 8.• Most childcare centers, even free and subsidized facilities require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers.• Cloth diapers are not accepted at the vast majority of child care centers.• Many parents cannot go to work or school if they can’t leave their babies at child care.

Petition Asking for Support

For Immigrants Gets Results

In early July, over two dozen Trinity Parishioners signed a petition addressed to our Federal

and State Representative asking for their support for a petition in support of immigrants to

the United States. We wrote to our Federal Congressional Representatives – Senators Book-

er and Menendez and Representative Pallone – and to Governor Phil Murphy, and our State

Legislature Representatives Senator Vitale, Assemblyman Coughlin, and Assemblywoman

Lopez.

The petition asked for their support in four areas: reuniting children with their families,

placing children who have traveled here unaccompanied, allowing Dreamers to stay, and

legitimizing parents who have lived here for years and have children who are American

citizens.

We have received a wonderful response from State Senator Vitale. See our letter to him and

his response printed on the next page.

The Way of St. Paul Team thanks you all for your support on these important issues.

Volunteers Needed

Eucharistic Ministers & Altar Guild

During the past months, several of our Eucharistic

Ministers and Visitors have left due to health,

relocating or for other reasons. This has significantly

depleted our numbers.

As a Eucharistic Minister and/or Visitor you will

have the satisfaction and develop a new sense of spir-

itually by participating directly, on the Altar, in the

Holy Eucharist.

As a Eucharistic Visitor you will be rewarded with a

deep satisfaction of administering Holy Communion

to those Parishioners who are unable to attend Mass.

It does not involve much of your time to participate

in this most satisfying Ministry. Depending upon the

number of Parishioners accepting this challenge and

joining the ranks of Trinity's Eucharistic Ministers

and Visitors it can be as little as 1-2 hours per month.

Won’t you consider joining us!!

You just might enjoy your service!!

To Volunteer or for further information, please

contact: Mother Angela For Reflection

Use what talents you possess: The woods would be

very silent if no birds sang there except those who sang

the best.

During the last several months, the ranks of our

Altar Guild have been reduced and we are seeking

women (or men) to join our Ministry.

Serving as a Member of the Altar Guild is one of

the most important and satisfying Ministries of our

Church. When resetting the Altar, you are often

doing it in the solitude of an empty Church that

lends itself to contemplation and mediation. Most

Altar Guild Members find this time most gratifying

and rewarding.

Each Attar Guild Member serves one month at a

time. At present the Altar Guild is on a 3 month

rotation. With additional members, the time

between will be increased.

To Volunteer or for further information, please

contact Mother Angela or any Altar Guild Member.

Dinner Meeting and incidental expenses of the group.

business meeting in Jan and an end of the year wrap up meeting in May. In October we will have a
