Ruling the Game By: Tom Edwards
Dear Mr. Director: May a player violate an announced partnership agreement? The other day my opponent opened with 2H and had J98654 of hearts. His convention card said he always holds two of the top three honors. I went wrong playing the suit! Dear Mr. Wrong: A player may violate a partnership agreement, so long as partner is unaware of the violation. No player has an obligation to disclose to the opponents that he has violated an announced partnership agreement. If the opponents are subsequently damaged, as through drawing a false inference from such violation, they are not entitled to redress. If a player knows that his partner has violated an agreement (he has two of the top three honors in his hand), he is not in any way required to disclose this. When explaining the significance of partner’s call or play in response to an opponent’s inquiry, a player should disclose special information that he has from both partnership agreement and partnership experience. He need not disclose inferences drawn from his general knowledge and experience. When asked about a bid, he should never say, “I am taking his bid to mean……..” To do this is to disclose information that is unauthorized for the partnership. If a player subsequently recognizes his own error, or that his explanation was erroneous or incomplete, he should call the Director right away. The Director will apply law 21, Call based on Misinformation, or law 40, Director’s Option to Award an Adjusted Score in Partnership Misunderstandings.
If a player recognizes his partner’s error, he must not let on in any way whatsoever! Calling the Director away for a consultation is terrible! He is not allowed to take advantage of the unauthorized information in any way. If his side is the declaring side, he must call the Director right away after the final pass of the auction and before the opening lead is faced. The last person to pass on the non-offending side may change his call and the bidding proceeds if the pass was based on misinformation. If the side that gave the misinformation becomes the defender, nothing is said until the last card is played for that hand. This is the one case in the laws where the offending side must own up to its own infraction! The Director can award an adjusted score if he deems that the non-offending side was damaged by receiving the misinformation. A partnership misunderstanding can give misinformation to the opponents. If the misinformation is from a mistaken explanation, it must be called to the attention of the opponents at the proper time. If there is damage, an adjustment will be awarded to the innocent side. If the misinformation is from a mistaken bid, there is no infraction of law, since the proper explanation of the bid was made, but a player has unauthorized information and must not base subsequent bids on that knowledge. If he does, the Director shall award an adjusted score. Here is the bottom line: Know your agreements and bid accordingly. If your partner gives an incorrect explanation, do not let on until the proper time. If your partner does a mistaken bid, do not let on ever, and base your future calls upon the proper explanation even if you know of the mistake.

THE LONGEST DAY
Thanks to all for the support and
contributions. I think it was a big success.
$1,026.11 was collected the day of the event.
ACBL will be sending $68 to Alzheimer’s
Association on our behalf, a grand total of
$1094.11. Thanks to the Unit for picking up
the expenses of $322. Special thanks to
Jane Hunt for managing the monies. Thanks
to Tom Edwards, Larry Lang and John Van
Keuren for directing. Thanks to all who
helped move from one room to the other and
for helping clean up. I am ready for next year
are you? It will be Thursday June 21. Larry
Lang has agreed to organize the games.
Looking for volunteers for several tasks:
silent auction , advertising, and non-ACBL
section of bridge or a beginner section for
new players and non-ACBL. Food will be my
thing, but I will be contacting those of you who
offered help this year.
THANK YOU
