Welcome to St. John the Baptist (Dixie) Anglican Church

…or, more simply “St. John’s Dixie”

Thank you for joining us today! Whatever your age, background, or orientation, whether you are

married, divorced or single, with children or without, are a life-long Anglican, from another

Christian tradition, totally new to the faith or “just looking” you are very welcome here!

Our Vision

St. John’s Dixie is a diverse and inclusive Anglican community of faith, dedicated to Jesus Christ

with passion, through spiritual growth and inspiring worship.

Our Mission

Together we empower one another in active and engaging ministry to share the transforming

Good News of Jesus Christ, by building loving and supportive relationships.

Our Values

Faith. + Celebration + Hospitality + Respect + Accountability

Our goal is to be a G.I.F.T. to one another and to this community by

Growing In Faith Together

We’d also like you to know…

Order of Service - You’ll find everything you need for the worship service printed in this colourful

leaflet – prayers, scripture readings and hymns, along with instructions in italics, so you’ll know

when to stand, sit or kneel. If you have difficulty standing or kneeling, it’s completely ok to remain

seated. Announcements about events and opportunities within our community are listed in the back

of the leaflet, along with contact information for our church.

Children - Children and infants are most welcome. We have a children’s program for younger

kids that takes place on the stage in the Parish Hall during the service. They return to the sanctuary

at the time of Communion. Children are also free to stay with you during the service. If your child

becomes fussy or your baby is in need of feeding or changing, don’t worry! Our sides person at

the back of the church can direct you to the Payton Room, where you can privately care for your

baby while still hearing the service through a loudspeaker. Please don’t be embarrassed if your

baby cries or your children get fidgety. We understand that children make noise and move around.

Holy Communion - Those who have been baptized in any Christian church, including children,

are welcome to receive communion. If you have not been baptized yet or do not wish to receive the

bread and wine, you are welcome to come to the altar rail for a blessing. Simply cross your hands

over your chest to alert the priest you wish to receive a blessing.

Hymns marked (LEV) are from the hymnal “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Welcome Greeting Fr. Daniel

Processional Hymn: #162 –“SING OF GOD MADE MANIFEST”Please stand & sing

Sing of God made manifest in a child robust and blest,

to whose home in Bethlehem where a star had guided them,

magi came and gifts unbound, signs mysterious and profound:

myrrh and frankincense and gold grave and God and king foretold.

Sing of God made manifest when at Jordan John confessed,

"I should be baptized by you, but your bidding I will do."

Then from heaven a double sign – dove–like Spirit, voice divine –

hailed the true Anointed One: "This is my beloved Son."

Sing of God made manifest on the cloud–capped mountain's crest,

where both voice and vision waned until Christ alone remained:

glimpse of glory, pledge of grace, given as Jesus set his face

towards the waiting cross and grave, sign of hope that God would save.

The Gathering of the Community

the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

The Proclamation of the Word Please be seated

Reader: A Reading from the Second Book of Kings.

When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha

were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me

as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not

leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel

came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your

master away from you?” And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.” Elijah said to him,

“Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”

But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they

came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and

said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?” And

he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.” Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord

has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will

not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also

went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.

Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to

the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had

crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from

you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” He responded, “You

have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted

you; if not, it will not.” As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses

of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha

kept watching and crying out, “Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”

But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two

pieces.

Reader: The word of the Lord. 2 Kings 2.1-12

Psalm 50.1-6 Please remain seated & sing

The Cantor sings the refrain, all repeat

Cantor: The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken; he has called the earth from the rising of

the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, God reveals himself in

glory. All sing the refrain.

Cantor: Our God will come and will not keep silence; before him there is a consuming

flame, and round about him a raging storm. He calls the heavens and the earth

from above to witness the judgement of his people. All sing the refrain.

Cantor: “Gather before me my loyal followers, those who have made a covenant with me

and sealed it with sacrifice.” Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause;

for God himself is judge. All sing the refrain.

Reader: A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Please be seated

Even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of

this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of

the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim

ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake.

For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts

to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Reader: The word of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4.3-6

People: Thanks be to God. A moment of silence is observed

Sequence Hymn: #167 – “TIS GOOD, LORD, TO BE HERE” Please stand & sing

The first two verses are sung before the Gospel.

'Tis good, Lord, to be here! Thy glory fills the night;

thy face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light.

'Tis good, Lord, to be here, thy beauty to behold,

where Moses and Elijah stand, thy messengers of old.

The last two verses is sung after the Gospel.

Fulfiller of the past, promise of things to be,

we hail thy body glorified, and our redemption see!

'Tis good, Lord, to be here! Yet we may not remain;

but, since thou bidst us leave the mount, come with us to the plain.

The Gospel

Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Leader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People:

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high

mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes

became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to

them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Page 7: THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD HOLY EUCHARIST SUNDAY MARCH … · 2019-02-25 · ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it

Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they

were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice,

“This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw

no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he

ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen

from the dead.

The Nicene Creed Please stand

Leader: Let us confess our faith as we say,

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only

Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from

Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the

Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he

came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became

incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was

crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the

third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into

heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in

glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We

believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the

Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has

spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic

Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look

for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Come and journey with a Saviour who has called us from our birth,

who has washed us in the waters, and who loved us on the earth.

Refrain:

Come and journey, come and journey with a Saviour who has come.

We are all God's sons and daughters; in the Spirit we are one.

Come and journey, journey inward, come and seek him deep within,

where he meets us in our living, in our striving and our sin. Refrain:

Come and journey, journey outward, telling others of his name,

telling others of his glory, of his cross and of the shame. Refrain:

Come and journey, journey upward. Sing his praises, offer prayer.

In the storm and in the stillness find his presence everywhere. Refrain:

Come and journey, journey onward; all our gifts we now shall bring

to the building of a city that is holy, Christ its King. Refrain:

Priest: Holy God, Lover of creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of

your steadfast love you bear us and place the song of your Spirit in our hearts.

When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your

Spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in

every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. Joining

in the song of the universe we proclaim your glory singing:

Please kneel or be seated

Priest: Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile

humanity. Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection you open the path from

brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for

you. Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death

was near.

Priest: His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together

those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to

his friends, saying, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this

for the remembrance of me.” After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you

thanks, and said “Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant

which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the

remembrance of me.”

And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the

bread and cup of Christ’s undying love, and to proclaim our faith.

All: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Priest: Breathe your Holy Spirit the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we

bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our soul and bodies, that we may be

signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all glory

is yours, Creator of all, and we bless your holy name for ever.

All: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer All sing unaccompanied

Communion Hymn: #328 – “LO, GOD IS HERE!” All sing

Lo, God is here! Let us adore and own how awesome is this place;

Let all with in us feel God’s power and bow before the hidden face.

Redeeming Lord, your grace we prove, serve you with awe, with reverence love.

Lo, God is here! Both day and night united choirs of angels sing;

to God, enthroned above all height, heaven’s host their noblest praises bring;

disdain not, Lord, our meaner song, who praise you with a stammering tongue.

Being of beings, may our praise your courts with grateful fragrance fill;

still may we stand before your face, still hear and do your sovereign will;

to you may all our thoughts arise, ceaseless, accepted sacrifice.

Communion Hymn: #619 – “FAIREST LORD JESUS” All sing

Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O thou the Godhead's human son:

thee will I cherish, thee will I honour, thou my soul's glory, joy, and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, who makes the troubled heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and fair the twinkling, starry host;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast.

All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly, wondrously, Jesus, is found in thee;

none can be nearer, fairer, or dearer than thou, my Saviour, art to me.

Choir Anthem – “Transfiguration” Words and Music by Joel Martinson

We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace.

Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain,

searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain.

Light breaks in upon our darkness, splendour bathes the flesh joined Word,

Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard.

Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the Law and Prophets meets:

Christ, with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete.

Page 15: THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD HOLY EUCHARIST SUNDAY MARCH … · 2019-02-25 · ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it

Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest out faith decline,

we like Peter find it tempting to remain and build a shrine.

But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess,

the our daily loves may prove us people of the God we bless.

Prayer after Communion

Priest: Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. May we who are

partakers of his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may

know his power to change and save. We ask this in his name.

All: Amen.

Priest: Glory to God,

All: whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or

imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in

Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing

Recessional Hymn: #387 – “ALL PRAISE TO THEE” Please stand & sing

All praise to thee, for thou, O King divine, didst yield the glory that of right was thine,

that in our darkened hearts thy grace might shine: alleluia, alleluia!

Thou camest to us in lowliness of thought; by thee the outcast and the poor were sought,

and by thy death was God's salvation wrought: alleluia, alleluia!

Let this mind be in us which was in thee, who wast a servant that we might be free,

humbling thyself to death on Calvary: alleluia, alleluia!

Wherefore, by God's eternal purpose, thou art high exalted o'er all creatures now,

and given the name to which all knees shall bow: alleluia, alleluia!

Let every tongue confess with one accord in heaven and earth that Jesus Christ is Lord;

and God the Father be by all adored: alleluia, alleluia!

Dismissal

Priest: Go forth to be transformed into the likeness and light of Christ. Alleluia! Alleluia!

People: Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia!
