A short history of Sandwich-Sandwich was the first town settled on the Cape. Founded

in 1637 by Edmund Freeman

-The land was part of Plymouth Colony whose Pilgrim founders were notably more liberal in their religious beliefs than the narrow-minded Puritans of Boston’s Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Approximately sixty families settled in Sandwich, and by 1639 they were building a Town House for civic and religious meetings.

By the 1650s Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies were becoming attractive to a new faith, the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

These Quakers were fined for their beliefs but kept meeting.

Today, Sandwich’s Quaker Meetings are the oldest continuous Monthly Quaker Meetings in America.

Sandwich and Massachusetts in general was involved in King Phillip’s War

During the Revolutionary War and the years leading up to it, Sandwich firmly supported the Patriot cause, but there were enough Tories in the Town to provoke factional disputes and discord.

Dr. Nathaniel Freeman was an important patriot who led a protest on the Barnstable Court of the King.
