In the mid-1950’s, a new wooden sign with the school’s name was placed at the front of the school on East King Street. The sign was made in the carpentry shop. The text that accompanied this photo of the “new” sign read, “Know ye by these presents – at long last a sign for all the world to see! The new marker stands erect facing East King Street, easily seen by the passing traffic.”

From The President’s Desk

Greeting from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology,

The opening of the school year went very well, especially considering that the Branch Campus is closed for the year and all of the programs housed at that location were moved to a leased building in the Greenfield Corporate Center. Our staff and faculty did an incredible job to insure this transition went smoothly and had little or no negative impact on our students.

Among the many initiatives for the upcoming year is the creation of a new Master Plan. A Master Plan is a roadmap for the development of the campus and a vehicle to develop the physical aspirations of our vision and strategic plan. The foundation of the Master Plan is the College’s Academic Plan which sets the goals for which programs the College will offer as well as enrollment. Other elements that must be integrated into the plan are the Enrollment Management Plan, Technology Plan, and Financial Plan. VP Betty Tompos is chairing the Master Plan Steering Committee composed of a cross section of the institution’s constituents and VP William Thompson is directing the creation of the Academic Plan. In practice this is a concurrent joint effort. The Master Plan Steering Committee will create a detailed outline of the plan with the assistance from professionals in the field. This will be an inclusive process with input from all constituent groups throughout the process.

The first step in the process has been to establish the ideal criteria for a program to be offered at the College. These criteria include: placement potential of graduates; high skill-high wage in nature; opportunities for employment in Pennsylvania; and potential to attract and matriculate mission students. At this point the Committee will evaluate the College’s current programs based on these criteria using the data which is available through each program’s annual performance data dashboard. The next step will be to evaluate potential programs based on these criteria and then establish goals in terms of programs and enrollment. Many other intermediate steps are involved. In the end a plan for the entire campus will be created that includes current as well as proposed future facilities to accommodate the goals determined and defined during the process.

The final document will provide a roadmap to the future physical development of the campus and is critical to fundraising and the capital budget requests to the Commonwealth. This is an exciting effort which we hope to conclude within the next year. I will keep you informed of our progress.

Class of 1980Mike LeVasseur (Collision Repair) was recently awarded the 2011 Collision Repair Shop Executive of the Year Award at the annual International Autobody Congress & Exposition in Orlando, FL. LeVasseur is partner, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Keenan Auto Body, Inc. of Philadelphia, PA. In his current position, LeVasseur currently operates 11 facilities with a total sales of more than $19 million. Beyond growing Keenan Auto Body’s bottom line, LeVasseur, his staff and their family have contributed to their community by hosting an annual charity golf outing that raised more than $200,000 for local charities. LeVasseur has also spearheaded green initiatives within Keenan Auto Body to minimize their impact on the environment.

Class of 1987The year 2012 marks a special anniversary – the 25th reunion of your graduation from Stevens! We hope you save the date, April 21, 2012 for this special reunion with your classmates. If anyone wishes to volunteer as a chairperson for this reunion, please contact Sophie Weibel in the Alumni Office ([email protected] or 717-295-9666). In the meantime, mark this date on your calendar and make plans to come back to campus for the reunion – you’ll be proud to see how Stevens has grown!

Class of 1990Bruce Shallis called to update his information and said he now owns 3 businesses (commercial cleaning, rental properties and an off-road park), employing 70 people. Although he never worked in Cabinetmaking, he’s grateful to Stevens for giving him the skills and business training to become a successful entrepreneur.

Class of 2000Bernard Hershberger, a 2007 graduate of Penn State Harrisburg’s MBA program and graduate of both Penn State and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Mechanical Engineering Technology, has received the Penn State Alumni Association’s 2011 Alumni Achievement Award. Hershberger is president and owner of Stoltz Mfg, LLC, a designer and manufacturer of spreading equipment for the farming and construction industries. He became the third generation in his extended family to run the business. Stoltz Mfg. received a national innovation award for introducing new products to highway professionals, including a cement spreader with a dust-control system, which Hershberger designed. Hershberger serves on the advisory committee to the Mechanical Engineering Technology Department at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

Class of 2005Coty Martin was named software development engineer for Godfrey Advertising, Inc. of Lancaster. He will develop websites and custom application programming. He was a software engineer at Robson Forensic, Inc. He also is a Marine Corps veteran and a graduate of Steven’s Computer Network Systems Administration (CNSA) program.

Welcome Coach Casillo

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has announced the hiring of Dan Casillo as the new Head Coach for the college’s wrestling team.

“This is a great opportunity to work for a top quality institution with an outstanding reputation in the classroom and on the mat,” state Casillo. “While participating in the NJCAA, Thaddeus Stevens has set a high standard, and it’s my commitment to uphold that standard as I support the athletes in achieving their individual, team and college goals.”

Coach Casillo brings with him many years of coaching experience at the High School level, including serving as Pequea Valley’s Junior High Head Wrestling Coach and most recently as the Freshman Head Wrestling Coach for McCaskey High School. Casillo also wrestled for Gannon University’s Division II wrestling squad while attending the college.

Casillo takes over an accomplished team that will, among others, return all three of the wrestlers who qualified for Nationals in 2011, Adam Will, Matt Rust and Sterling Goshea.

This is the clockworks for the tower clock in the Mellor Administration building at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. We think the clock was purchased in by Ted Schwalm from the City of New York’s Grand Central Station. Does anyone know this history?

Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology inducted three new members into the Athletic Hall Fame on Friday, September 30. Ellsworth Lear ’54; Michael Plaxa ’53 and Mickey Schriver ’55 were each inducted into the Hall of Fame during a banquet and ceremony in their honor

beginning at 6:00 pm in Jones Dining Hall. In addition to the ceremony on Friday evening, the three inductees were recognized during half time of the Homecoming football game.

The three inductees were selected after being nominated for this year’s Hall of Fame. “Based on their experiences as student athletes for the college, these men personify the spirit of the athletic program at Thaddeus Stevens College,” commented Chad Baker, Director of Marketing and Public Information.

The mission of the Athletics Department of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is to provide an athletic program that helps develop the whole person through education and competition, to stimulate a lasting attitude of discipline, sportsmanship, integrity, leadership, and social responsibility, to promote ethnic and cultural diversity within athletic programs, to insure equal opportunity for all staff and student-athletes, and to make the athletic program an enduring source of pride for the student population, student-athletes, alumni, college, and community.

Thaddeus Stevens College is committed to opening the doors in nontraditional fields for girls. Stevens has developed a K-12 initiative to encourage low-income students to consider technical careers. One component is the Stevens’ summer technology camps which target girls who are a key group in the larger puzzle of preparing tomorrow’s technical workforce. This summer, more than sixty girls from Lancaster and surrounding counties had the opportunity to immerse themselves in technology.

One program was a collaborative six-week project between YWCA of Lancaster County and Stevens’ which introduced girls to the fields of robotics, plumbing, carpentry, electronics, graphic design and printing, and collision repair. The program is designed to broaden girls’

knowledge and interest in technology fields, and help them develop the confidence to use tools of the trade, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to create fun projects.

Personal development workshops were conducted around career development and self-esteem. The goals of the programs are to help girls create a “future story” for themselves in which a technical career and a well-rounded life are seen not only as exciting and rewarding but attainable.

The second program entitled, Minds Innovating and Seeking Sustainability (MISS) incorporated hands-on instruction with “live” green field trips, psychosocial development workshops, and recreational activities. MISS provided 18 hours of hands-on instruction in three technical programs of study: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Carpentry, and Graphic Design. The HVAC workshop provided instruction in energy auditing for kids, solar heating and cooling, weatherization. MISS participants made jewelry boxes from recycled materials in Carpentry Technology and designed green slogan logos in Graphic Design. Green field trips included Frye Landfill and Methane Gas Production, and National Novelty Brush Company’s green roof.

PPL Supports Stevens Through PA EITC Tax Credits

John M. Levitski, Regional Director of PPL Corporation, recently presented a check for $10,000 to the College Foundation, representing Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) funds. The funds are for the College’s Pathways to Achievement initiative which supports the College’s Dual Enrollment/Early Enrollment program. This program is in cooperation with Lancaster County school districts and provides high school seniors an opportunity to concurrently enroll at Thaddeus Stevens College to take advanced courses or technical programs not available at their school. These courses are credited toward their senior year and high school graduation, as well as toward their first year in college. Financial support such as demonstrated by PPL is critical to the success of this program and the opportunity for students start a college degree, which they may not otherwise be able to attain. Tech Savvy Girls


That’s right; raise your hands if you’re going with us on our next College project challenge. It doesn’t matter if you are a mountain climber or an astronaut. The pinnacle of one’s success is really the threshold catalyst that serves as an incentive for the next challenge. We all know we’re in a sluggish economy and at the college level our budget is extremely limited. Every step by our administration is one of monetary prudence which is complemented by their daily reevaluations of operational priorities.

This is where you and I come in, recognizing that we now have another rewarding opportunity to undertake a very important project for the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, one that would produce facility enhancement and student learning.

The general consensus is to align our focus on Old Main, probably better known as the Mellor Building, which is located at the end of our main entrance coming off King Street. The Mellor Building is 107 years old and has been well used by thousands of students, faculty and administrators, all who have exhibited lots of tender loving care in its usage over the last century.

In consulting with President Griscom it was decided the restoration of Mellor auditorium would be a most worthy campaign and undertaking for our alumni and friends of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Turning this small auditorium with the anchoring beauty of its little balcony back to the era of antiquity will require the highest refining craftsmanship by our students.

Upon completion the auditorium will be designated as the Lydia Hamilton Smith Gallery. It will bear a décor and design reflecting the era of her time with a slight blend of current technology.

It is our desire to capture the strength and character of this outstanding lady as an African American mother, housekeeper, business woman, etc. through pictorial displays and historical narratives with an illustrative overview of the 24 year working relationship between Lydia and Thaddeus Stevens.

We want to highlight the successful entrepreneurship of Lydia Hamilton Smith in the midst of a very dark time in our nation when slavery, segregation and oppression were rampant throughout the land.

The Lydia Smith story is a natural lead-in to showcasing the women of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology as we embrace and reveal pictorially our expanded mission of 1976 in becoming a co-ed

institution. We would like to show historically the advancing academic progression that our women students have made from 1976 to the present. We want to emphasize the vast job placement opportunities availed to women who are technically skilled. We’ll be illustrating how Stevens College is training and preparing women technologically for employment in the world’s workforce of tomorrow.

The new Lydia Hamilton Smith Gallery may be used to conduct lectures, Presidential briefings, Trustee meetings, invited guests, to host public committee meetings, special training sessions, event planning, admissions testing, visiting campus tours, administrative and student committee meetings, President Council planning sessions, formal gatherings day or evening and much, much more.

The most exciting part of all is knowing this will be an outstanding tribute and honor, not only to Lydia Hamilton Smith, but to the past, present and future women of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. It will be an everlasting memorial of the highest honor and recognition of the valued presence and contributions of the women students of Stevens.

Right after the first of the New Year I’ll be sharing additional information on the upcoming kick-off of the Lydia Hamilton Smith Gallery campaign as we develop architectural design details and an estimated restoration cost of the gallery. This is a fantastic project for the College and is another opportunity for you to help Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology change the lives of those less fortunate through technical education. I’m confident with your generous support we can have a victorious campaign in bringing the new Lydia Hamilton Smith Gallery to reality in 2012.

I write this letter with much joy and gratitude to each of you. It was through your generosity of time, talent and financial support that I’m able to say the indebtedness for the electronic message center and the masonry monument base has been fully retired thanks to your most meaningful contributions. When you look on the inside front cover of this newsletter you’ll see the picture of the Thaddeus Stevens

sign panel erected on our front lawn back in the early 1920’s. You can detect the Stevens community pride that existed then by the adjoining caption. Here we are 90 some years later and once again beaming with institutional pride as the new electronic message center makes an empowering technical presence on our campus.

It’s often said the fruits of your labor are ever before you. Well the fruits of your thoughtfulness for Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology are now stately standing at the corner of our campus at King and Broad Streets proudly proclaiming the multiple technical training opportunities offered by Stevens College. Our Admissions Department has reported that the electronic messaging center is producing public awareness and it is already being reflected in our enrollment.

When we started this campaign in September of 2010 we said this project would be a wonderful 2011 Christmas gift to Stevens College and I was confident with your help we could make it happen. I’m happy to say you did it and you did it with flare. President Griscom had a special dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on August 12th. We were delighted that so many of the donors were able to be a part of the celebration. A commemorative picture of the electronic message center placed in a unique convexed frame was presented to everyone present at the luncheon reception preceding the

dedication. All donors who were unable to be with us will receive their appreciation gift by mail.

I close with a sincere thank you to all our contributors for their monetary support and to our students for their outstanding workmanship and to all those who provided supervision and special in-kind gifts.

When you invest in Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology you are investing in a winner. Changing the lives of young people through technical education not only changes the person, it changes the world we live in. With your kindness and continued support we can accomplish all that is set before us. Happenings in Academic AffairsDr. William Tompson, Vice President

Master Academic PlanAs part of the accreditation process for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the College needs to prepare a master plan for academic affairs. Over the past few weeks, this document has been slowly developing into a draft form for distribution and comment. It should be noted that not only does the final plan help to direct the goals and timeliness of academic affairs, but it also serves as the foundation upon which the College’s Facility Master Plan is built.

It is anticipated that the Master Academic Plan will be completed by November, 2011. Everyone is invited to provide input.

Workforce Development and Continuing EducationWith the closure of the Office of Workforce Development and CE, many of the initiatives have been either lost or postponed. The administration and recordkeeping chores of that office have fallen on the Office of Academic Affairs. During a recent event, the College was approached by a representative of Penn State University – Lancaster Center who was interested in establishing a workable partnership. That institution offered to assume the responsibility of serving as the administrative and fiscal agent for Thaddeus Stevens College’s non-credit and CE training. Subsequent meetings have shown that a partnership may be possible. Details have yet to be finalized.

Evening Electrical TechnologyAt the time of this writing, the Electrical Technology program that is scheduled to be run in the evenings has 12 students enrolled. This

is an adequate number to insure that the individual courses will run, and to provide confidence that future evening programs should be offered. Although no commitment has yet been made, it appears that there is a growing interest in HVAC training, and this might be the program to be offered during the evening hours next year.

Respiratory Care Close-outThe Respiratory Care program is now in its final year of delivery. The close-out has not been without its challenges and frustrations, however everything seems to be under control. With the help and guidance of friends at Harrisburg Area Community College and Millersville University, the fourteen remaining students will be educated by highly qualified faculty. Ms. Joy Hughes and Ms. Shannon Ahrens have assumed the responsibility for the final year of program and clinical training. The students should graduate on time in May 2012.

Summer Session UpdateThis year, the College held a ten week Summer session (including two – five week mini sessions). Both general education courses and developmental courses were offered, and over 100 students were enrolled. During these sessions, students addressed academic readiness issues, resolved failures from previous semesters, and worked to get ahead to ease their load in upcoming semesters. The new schedule has proven to be a valuable addition to the College’s portfolio.

Articulation with PSUDuring the summer months, faculty in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Technology visited Penn State – Harrisburg to discuss articulation. Although more work needs to be done, it appears that graduates of both programs may be able to enter their respective baccalaureate programs as juniors (or at least with most credits counting toward the degree).

Stevens College Hosts 3rd Annual Scholarship Dinner As a way to recognize and thank our generous scholarship donors and introduce them to our student recipients, Stevens College held a Scholarship Awards and Recognition Dinner on Thursday evening, September 22, 2011. This year, 20 scholarships were awarded to 39 individual students, distributing a total of over $80,000. The financial assistance provided by these scholarships offers life-changing support to qualified students at Stevens. See total list of scholarships on page 19.

A record 39 students received scholarship this year at the annual Scholarship Dinner.


Development NewsAllen E. Tate, Director of Development

Another school year is underway and our students are taking part in many exciting and challenging academic and social aspects of college life.

We were challenged with relocating our branch campus academic programs to a facility in Greenfield Industrial Park for the year as our branch campus is being renovated. Student housing has been consolidated on the main campus. Approximately 900 students are busy pursuing their vocational dream and preparation for the workforce through our various facilities.

This year, Homecoming and Family Day offered a full week of daily activities that engaged all and culminated in a Saturday filled with department reunions, a car show, street fair, crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen and an overwhelming victory over Williamson by our football team. The college spirit lives on! Catch the Spirit!

Along with this enthusiasm is the continued challenge of the rising operational expenses and the challenge of state budget cuts in education that forces many adjustments in staffing, program support, ongoing upgrading of equipment and technology for our program labs and staff support, student needs, scholarships, professional development, facility maintenance, and many other needs. Like many colleges, Thaddeus Stevens College counts on significant annual financial support from its alumni, friends and corporate partners to continue our ongoing efforts to enhance the Stevens Experience for all students.

In the weeks to come you will be receiving information on the Stevens Annual Fund. Through this Annual Fund there are many ways to help the college and the students. Your gift supports the many activities and programs that have been outlined above. You can give a gift to the General Annual Fund which will be used where the need is most. Or, you can also designate how your gift is to be used - for a special program, a department, a scholarship, student need, the athletic program or other needs. Gifts can be made on a one- time gift or pledged monthly/quarterly throughout the year. All gifts are important to this college, no matter what the amount. We also offer a new publication that outlines possible gift planning opportunities available through the Advancement Department

Within the Annual Fund is the President’s Fund, which is designated for special emergency needs of students and programs, student orientation and counseling, facility emergencies and other such needs.

Many students have been served by this fund in support of a personal need which made the difference of them continuing their educational pursuit at Stevens or leaving the college. Our mission is to help such students gain their educational advantage. Many of these students give back to the fund when they are in a professional situation to do so.

Our corporate and foundation partners can help in the Annual Fund through their Matching Gift Programs , or a gift through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program, a gift of scholarship support, material donations to the New Home Construction Project built by Stevens students annually, funding equipment and technology, or supporting a department or a program.
