North Shore AdventureExperience the North Shore’s rich history and culture with professionally led docent tours. Your day begins at the Baha’i Temple, one of only seven in the world. Its white walls of lace-like ornamentation and its dome, which rises 135 feet, create a scene of unsurpassed beauty and tranquility. Discover former Vice President Charles Gates’ historic mansion on our next stop. This stunning chateau overlooking Lake Michigan has a wonderful interactive exhibit on the 2nd floor. Next is the Levere Memorial Temple built in 1930. The stained glass windows in this mansion depict historic events including the healing of the nation after the Civil War. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the popular Celtic Knot with your choice of 1) corned beef & cabbage, 2) fish & chips, or 3) chicken pot pie. A Tribute to Roy Orbison at White Pines TheatreRoy Orbison’s music has touched millions and his influence is still felt today. Randy Walker assumes the persona of Roy Orbison and performs his music from his early days at Sun Records in the mid 50s through his final album in 1988. Randy captures Roy’s four-octave vocal range, performing such songs as: Pretty Woman, Crying, Love Hurts, Candy Man, and Blue Bayou. White Pines Theatre has long been a favorite with their delicious food, charming log cabin lodge, and dynamic entertainers. Rick Bayless Garden Tour with City Ventures Take an exclusive tour through the private urban garden of Chicago chef Rick Bayless. The Bayless Organic Garden, as featured on the PBS series “Mexico-One Plate at a Time,” is a winding, rambling space full of special touches and surprises. Located on three city lots in the Bucktown neighborhood, this garden provides a refuge, an outdoor kitchen, and an enticing vegetable garden with lettuces and herbs for use at the Bayless restaurants Frontera Grill, Topolobampo, and XOCO. Stunning containers abound in the interesting mix of spaces with creative use of paths, decking, arbors, and trellises. This completely organic oasis is a model for urban food production and demonstrates that gardens can be simultaneously functional and beautiful. Picnic in the Park Howdy y’all, it’s hoedown time! Today’s delicious lunch includes pulled pork sandwiches, smokey pit beans, creamy cole slaw, southwest sweet corn, and apple pie, catered by Steamboat BBQ of Carol Stream. Actor-singer-songwriter Rick Pickren will perform a fun and uplifting show after lunch. Rick has shared the stage with George Strait, Merle Haggard, Alabama, The Judds, Dolly Parton, Joe Ely, Rodney Crowell, B.J. Thomas, and cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell. A descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody, he per-forms his cowboy show all over the country. He’s won numerous awards, and was featured in the films Major League, While You Were Sleeping, Soul Survivors, and U.S. Marshals. He has also guest-starred on many TV shows, including The Untouchables, ER, Early Edition, Missing Persons, Turks, and Chicago PD. Today’s entertainment sponsor is Heritage Woods of Bolingbrook. Awesome August Party at Belmont Village of Carol StreamCelebrate summer at this awesome party on the patio at Belmont Village. The chef is grilling hamburgers

Location: Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard Road, Wheaton (home of Rice Pool and Water Park). Please note that classes are held on Wednesday and Thursday, and you must attend both days to receive your certificate.

Discover Wheaton Gardens If you love gardens, take this rare opportunity to visit two Wheaton treasures in a small group led by a pro! Hurley Gardens is the first stop, where you’ll learn about the history and the garden transformation that has taken place there over the last 10 years. Next

we’ll travel to the new Sensory Garden Playground at Danada South. This 40-acre site is home to an accessible, barrier-free playground for 2-to-5-year-olds,

fragrance garden, sound garden, and new Art Along the Way exhibit. Today’s tour guide is Deb Seymour, Wheaton Park District’s Superintendent of Horticulture. We’ll end our garden adventure with a casual lunch at Warren’s Ale House, where you can ask Deb all your garden questions. Choose at the restaurant from ten assorted entrees, plus enjoy either soup, salad, or housemade fries. Dessert and a soft drink or coffee/tea is included. We will be using Park District vans for this trip and have room for 26 garden enthusiasts. (LD)

Better BalanceFriday | 9-9:45A (starting 8/26)Mary Lubko Center | $3 drop-in feeLearn the secret to better balance and fewer falls in this fun fitness class with Kerry Weatherred, RN. You’ll learn how to strengthen your back and simple techniques for better balance. Strong muscles and bones plus better balance will keep you mobile and less likely to fall. Some exercises and stretches will be done sitting with much of the balance work done standing, with chairs available for support. The system of exercises you’ll learn was developed by physical therapists at Northwestern Medicine. This class is designed to fit your busy lifestyle and offers a drop-in fee which allows you come to when you can and pay at the door. A schedule of class dates for September, October, November, and December will be available August 26.

In fact, many factors leading to the risk of falls can be modified. This presentation by Anne Swanstrom-McCoy, a Marianjoy physical therapist specializing in balance, falls, and dizziness issues, will explain the risks of falling while offering valuable information on modifications and strategies to help you reduce and prevent falls.
