    Order of Worship

Te vision of St. Francis Church is to be a communitydedicated to the transformation of lives with the Gospel of

Jesus Christ for the Kingdom of God.

A note for visitors: Were thankful that you could join us for worship today, andwe pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin andinsert. If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice ofdividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goalof worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,

we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be acommunity that understands the specic gifts and challenges that children bring. Weencourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with yourchildren, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to takeadvantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the

Kitchen off of the entryway. All parents are provided with vibrating beepers to informthem should anything come up requiring their attention.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the servicebegins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply, and reect upon the past week. When youre ready, you might say the following prayeror one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace andof supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness ofheart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled

affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christour Lord. Amen.

Amen.

    First Reading: Exodus 17:1-7

All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim; but there wasno water for the people to drink. Therefore the people found fault with Moses, and said,Give us water to drink. And Moses said to them, Why do you nd fault with me? Whydo you put the Lord to the proof? But the people thirsted there for water, and the peoplemurmured against Moses, and said, Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us andour children and our cattle with thirst? So Moses cried to the Lord, What shall I do withthis people? They are almost ready to stone me. And the Lord said to Moses, Pass on

before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand therod with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on therock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the peoplemay drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the nameof the place Massah and Meribah, because of the faultnding of the children of Israel, and

because they put the Lord to the proof by saying, Is the Lord among us or not?

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God, *and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *

and the heights of the hills are his also.

5 The sea is his, for he made it, *and his hands have molded the dry land.

6 Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7 For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

8 Harden not your hearts,as your forebears did in the wilderness, *at Meribah, and on that day at Massah,

    when they tempted me.

9 They put me to the test, *

though they had seen my works.

10 Forty years long I detested that generation and said, *This people are wayward in their hearts;they do not know my ways.

11 So I swore in my wrath, *They shall not enter into my rest.

    Second Reading: Romans 5:1-11

Therefore, since we are justied by faith, we have peace with God through our LordJesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice inour sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance producescharacter, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because Godslove has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given tous. While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one willhardly die for a righteous manthough perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justied by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him fromthe wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the deathof his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Not onlyso, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have nowreceived our reconciliation.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ according to ______.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ

    Gospel Reading: John 4:5-42

So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the eld that Jacob gave to his sonJoseph. Jacobs well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, satdown beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria todraw water. Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. For his disciples had gone away intothe city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it that you, a Jew, ask a

drink of me, a woman of Samaria? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus6

answered her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give mea drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The

woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where doyou get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle? Jesus said to her, Every one

who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall givehim will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water

welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may notthirst, nor come here to draw. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. The woman answered him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right insaying, I have no husband; for you have had ve husbands, and he whom you now haveis not your husband; this you said truly. The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that youare a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem isthe place where men ought to worship. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the houris coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the

Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship theFather in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, andthose who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, Iknow that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show usall things. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he. Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, What do you wish? or,Why are you talking with her? So the woman left her water jar, and went away into thecity, and said to the people, Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this bethe Christ? They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples

besought him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But he said to them, I have food to eat of which youdo not know. So the disciples said to one another, Has any one brought him food?Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his

work. Do you not say, There are yet four months, then comes the harvest? I tell you, liftup your eyes, and see how the elds are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives

wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap that for

which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the womans testimony, Hetold me all that I ever did. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay

with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for wehave heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucied under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and gloried. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who was tempted in every way as we are, yet didnot sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer forourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all thecompany of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will,a perfect sacrice for the whole world.

    A Note on Todays Readings

The third Sunday of LentYear A

Welcome to our church on this Sunday of the Samaritan Woman. This story is one of theclassic biblical passages for those preparing for baptism at Easter. As the woman wasgradually enlightened about Jesus and about her relationship to God, so the candidatesare growing in their relationship with God during Lent. They look forward to receiving in

baptism the living water of Gods Spirit in their lives. Those already baptized are lledwith that living water and continue to be enlighted by Gods Spirit.

In the rst reading, we move forward in the history of salvation from the call of Abrahamand Sarah to the account of Moses and Israel in the Exodus from Egypt. On the occasion

we read about today, God provides water for the people in the desert. This is an image ofGods loving care for all people in the spiritual dryness of this world. The second reading is about the new life we have in God through Christ. Jesus gave up hislife for us, in order that we might be put right with God. In his death and resurrection, theestrangement between God and humanity is being repaired. We, in baptism, have beenreconciled with God.

As people in the desert thirst for water, so Christians nd in their Lenten living the thirstfor life that only God can quench. All of us, both the baptized and those preparing for

baptism, are, like the Samaritan woman, being enlightened and lled with the grace of theliving water that comes from our Savior.
