Purple Peace Foundation for Epilepsy Awareness Car Show

On Sunday, August 4, 2019, several Mid-America AACA members attended the 5th Annual Cruise for

Consciousness benefiting the Purple Peace Foundation for Epilepsy Awareness in Grain Valley, Mo.

This show began five years ago with 72 cars the first year. This year there were 260 cars registered.

There was good food and many giveaways and raffle items, plus a 50/50 pot. The organization has

worked hard to improve the show every year.

Bonnie and Bill won a t-shirt and nut and bolt magnet in the giveaways and won a $20 Arby's gift certifi-

cate in the raffle drawings.

Bob and Darla Lewis won the Purple Peace

Foundation's Purple Reign Award with their

Purple 1946 Ford 2 Door Coupe.

Bill Johnson's 1933 Studebaker

Rockne was picked as one of the top 25

25 cars at the show. He also took

People's Choice of the 260 cars at the

show. WAY TO GO, BILL!!!

Those attending from our club were Bob and Darla Lewis, Jon and Martie Kernodle, Bonnie and Bill

Johnson, Jim Streeby, Jack and Jane King and Jerry and Sharon Cygan.

It was a warm day, but a fun event. We got to see many different cars and visit with a lot of people.

Our most recent club activity was a rare tour of one of the region's treasure troves of antique automo-

biles.

After an overnight rain threatened to put a damper on the activities, the weather cleared in the morning

and it was a spectacular day for a garage tour. We were lucky enough to get a tour of Vic and Lucille

Macek’s private collection of REO automobiles and trucks. According to Vic he has over 30 antique

cars in his collection and most of them are REOs which makes it arguably the largest REO collection in

the United States.

For those of you that do not know, REO stands for Ransom E.

Olds, this is the same man that founded Oldsmobile Motors in

1897. Then in 1905, after Oldsmobile Motors was sold the Gen-

eral Motors Ransom formed the REO Motor Car Company in

Lansing, Michigan. The car was a successful brand but fell vic-

tim to the great depression. The REO Company remained in

business until 1975 by focusing on trucks and busses.

Vic’s impressive collection is on display in his upstairs garage,

downstairs garage and separate storage building. On display are

REOs ranging from the early 1900s up through the early 30’s .

Included are REO coupes, roadsters, touring cars, pick-up trucks,

heavy trucks, run-abouts and sedans. His collection includes

many REO Speedwagons, which were identified by Vic as any

pick-up truck or light truck manufactured by REO. Some of you may

recall the rock and roll band named REO Speedwagon - how many

of you knew that was a reference to vintage trucks?

The photographs from the garage tour indicate the breadth of Vic’s collection accumulated over his life-

time. Of particular note is Macek’s REO Royale, a full Classic Car. The Royale is credited with being the

link between the boxy late 1920 cars and the streamlined cars of the late 30’s. When it was introduced in

1931 it was widely recognized as the most beautiful car in the world. Think about a 1929 car with its flat

vertical windshield and radiator – then jump ahead to the Lincoln Zephyr, Chrysler airflows and other

aerodynamic designs by 1936. The Royale is the beautiful bridge between these two eras.

We can't thank Vic enough for sharing his collection with us.

After the garage tour we had seen more REOs than we had ever seen, we retired to a nearby barbecue res-

taurant called Blind Box barbecue for a meal and a short membership meeting. We would like to thank

Marsha Norman for her efforts in locating the restaurant and handling the necessary RSVP's from mem-

bers in order to plan the lunch. We would also like to thank Roscoe Yoder for suggesting the tour of

Macek’s collection and convincing Vic to let us gawk at it for over an hour.

Ed. I would like to apologize for misspelling Macek in the recent announcements …Jack

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Gregg and Mary-Sean Ratzloff

1951 Ford Custom Fordor

We welcome to Mid-America one of our newest couples, Greg & Mary-Sean Ratzloff of Shawnee. Re-

cently retired after 30 years, Gregg taught theatre tech at Topeka High School and Mary-Sean is actively

employed at Zurich Insurance. At the Great Car Show in July, a vintage McPherson County (Kansas)

license plate caught Roscoe's eye, and Gregg and he struck up a conversation. The Ratzloffs met our

stringent requirements for club membership (breathing and an interest in old cars), so they decided to

join us, and we are delighted they did. We look forward to Gregg telling the great story of their 1951

Ford Custom Fordor in an upcoming Generator. In the mean time, welcome to both of you!

1957 Chrysler Imperial Crown Convertible

David has owned Dr. Mayo’s (as in Mayo Clinic) 1958 Imperial for some time and it sat unrestored tak-

ing up space in the garage. Robin finally pushed David to have it restored and it turned out magnificent.

They have shown it all over the country and have won numerous awards. Robin is a realtor but in a pre-

vious life, for many years ran the Kansas City Arthritis Show Concours – however, she emphatically

states she is retired from the car show gig.
