From Rabbi Rick Rheins

The Sweetest Gift of All

My favorite line from the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof is when Tevye sings “If I Were A Rich Man.” He imagines the luxuries he could provide for his wife and family and all the honors that he’d suddenly enjoy. But then, he slows down the tempo of the song and sings with a sigh:

If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack To sit in the synagogue and pray And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men Seven hours every day Ah, that would be the sweetest thing of all.

Like Tevye, even Rabbis wish they had more time to study and pray! To be afforded a little extra time to study in-depth, to study l’shmah (for the simple sake of spiritual and intellectual enrichment), to study to brush up rusty skills, to study to renew the passion for learning and teaching---ah, that would be the sweetest gift of all. Well, you, the wonderful members of Temple Sinai are giving me that gift of study this summer. Thank you!

After our Temple Sinai tour to Israel concludes, Susan and I will stay in Jerusalem for another three weeks. It will be a time for exploring many different synagogues in Jerusalem. We’ll pray at shuls from just about every branch of Judaism: from Ultra-Orthodox, Modern-Egalitarian Orthodox, Reform and Conservative. We’ll participate in archaeological experiences. We’ll study s’farim, classic rabbinic texts. And we’ll take classes to renew and grow our rusty modern-Israeli Hebrew skills.

Now, some may wince at that agenda and humph that it is but a “busman’s holiday,” doing more or less what we do all the time. Ah, but the opportunity to study, challenge and refresh the mind and soul in Jerusalem---believe me, we are profoundly grateful!

So, you might ask, who’s going to take care of things back here at Temple Sinai while Susan and I are studying in Israel? First, you’ll have our fabulous Cantor Sheila Nesis who will not take her vacation until we return. Second, you’ll have Jordan Shaner, a 4

th year Rabbinic student who will be our intern. Many of

you know that Jordan grew up here at Temple Sinai. He is the son of Hanna and Mark Shaner, long-time members of Sinai. Jordan is also no stranger to our bimah. He has helped lead services at Sinai on a number of occasions. As you read his short bio in this Kesher, you’ll learn that he was just ordained as a Cantor by Hebrew Union College (HUC). Because of his love of Torah and teaching, he decided to continue his studies at HUC to become a Rabbi. You can imagine how very proud we are of Jordan! As you’ll soon see, he is uniquely blessed with a warm personality, a caring heart and a quick smile. I know that you’ll be supportive and encouraging---and resist the temptation to offer him constant advice and feedback!

Thank you again for giving us the sweet gift of study and prayer in Jerusalem. We will miss you and we look forward to bringing back home with us the spirit and inspiration of Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel.

Lehitraot, See you soon,

Meet Rabbinic Intern Jordan Shaner! Jordan Shaner is a Cantor and Rabbinical student. He was born and grew up in Denver and became a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. Before beginning his journey to Jewish professional life, Jordan was a singer and musician. As a student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, Jordan has interned at Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom (Reading, PA), Or Olam (the East 55th Street Conservative Synagogue Manhattan), North Shore Synagogue and Temple Adas Israel (Long Island). He also spent two summers as a community educator at BIMA—Brandeis University’s summer arts program for high school students from all different Jewish backgrounds and worked as a hospital chaplain for the Christiana Health Care System in Wilmington, Delaware. This fall, Jordan will continue his Rabbinic studies at HUC-JIR and marry his long-time partner, Kate Inie-Richards.

From Cantor Sheila Nesis

As summer approaches, we all think about the different ways in which we hope we’ll be able to disconnect from routine, relax, and trying to make time for those special pleasures that we so badly crave during the year: time spent outdoors, the list of books we want to complete before the summer is over, healthier eating habits (because salads are easier to eat in the summer!), time with friends and family, and opportunities to travel. However, that is not really “disconnecting”. It is still very much connecting, but to things that we actually enjoy and care about. Why can’t we always make time during the year to establish the connections to people, experiences, and things that brings us a deeper love for life and ourselves? That’s not an easy question to answer. But here I’m going to remind you of a few things you can do this summer with us at Sinai. They are certainly ways to disconnect, and yet, at the same time, ways to connect to your community and Judaism in meaningful ways.

Shabbat at Silo Park: To receive Shabbat in a different setting, with soulful prayer and music, join us at our Silo Park location on June 23, July 14, and August 4. Tot Shabbat begins at 5:15pm and Family Shabbat at 6:00pm.

Family Shabbat series: I’m beyond excited that we will hold our first Family Shabbat series this summer. These will be original and fun ways to engage in Shabbat, fun activities, and connecting with other families with young children. Each gather begins with a 20 minutes Tot Shabbat, followed by a soccer game on June 10, a 4th of July celebration on July 1, and a water and bubbles theme on August 19!! You do have to register online, so please go to our website! My son Solomon and I can’t wait to see you there!

Sheldon Low and Hadar Orshamily summer house concert: “We Are The Northern Lights” are Jewish singer songwriters Sheldon Low and Hadar Orshalimy’s indie, pop-folk band, and they will be performing at a private home in Highlands Ranch on Thursday, July 27. Tickets will be available for purchase on our website.

Temple Sinai’s Jewish Argentina adventure in 2018, informational meetings: I’m extremely excited for Sinai’s upcoming trip to Buenos Aires, April 10-17, 2018. I can’t wait to show you my hometown, explore together and make friendships with the thriving Jewish community there. If you are considering traveling with me, please join me to learn more about Buenos Aires and the trip’s details, all while enjoying some Argentinian food and drinks! Informational meetings will be held June 15, July 12, August 17 in the Study, 6:00pm-7:00pm.

Does Your Child Turn 13 in 2018 or 2019?

Don’t Worry! Some B’nei Mitzvah dates still are available!

It is never too late to have our children experience the life-affirming joy and pride of accomplishment by leading a service as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each year around 60 students become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Temple Sinai. The 2018 schedule is filling up and we have just started to assign the 2019 dates.

If you have a child who will turn 13 (or older) in 2018 and you do not yet have a reserved date for a service, please call Rabbi Rick or Rabbi Susan Rheins and we’ll answer all your questions and help you find a date that works for your family.

Date selection request forms also are available in the Temple Sinai office and can be mailed directly to you.

Interested in Conversion to Judaism? Sign up for the next Introduction to Judaism course!

Judaism isn’t about the answers… It’s about what questions you ask…

Are you curious about all things Jewish?

The Rocky Mountain Rabbinic Council offers a nationally renowned 28 week Introduction to Judaism (ITJ) course. Temple Sinai and Temple Emanuel rotate as the hosts of these classes (which are held on Thursdays from 7:15pm-9:00pm)

This program is taught by Rabbis from the Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Modern Orthodox movements. Many of you know that ITJ is a cornerstone of the Denver Jewish community’s conversion program. In fact, ours is one of the few in the country at which Rabbis from all the respective movements participate. But ITJ is not only for those interested in converting to Judaism. A great number of the ITJ students are Jews who simply want to take advantage of the fabulous classes in order to discover or rediscover the richness of Jewish thought, practice and history.

There is a modest fee for the course, but some scholarships are available. If you are interested in taking the class, please call either Rabbi Rick or Rabbi Susan Rheins at Temple Sinai at 303.759.1827. You can also contact Betsy Epel, the Director of the ITJ program at 303.324.9830 or email her at [email protected]. For more information, please visit itjrmrc.com

In order to thank Betsy for the extraordinary work she does leading the ITJ program and helping so many wonderful students through the conversion program, we’ll have a special honor and appreciation to her at our Shabbat Service on Friday, June 9.

The entire Temple Sinai community extends a huge thank you to Lisa Thorner, Program Director, and

Evelinda Urman, Event Chair, for the outstanding work they contributed to our successful Annual Event, "Once Upon a Time." I want to personally thank Lisa and Evelinda for the hard work and dedication they accomplished on spearheading this fantastic event. They have been instrumental in the event's success and their commitment to seeing it through from start to finish is truly an example of extraordinary leadership. The entire Annual Event committee deserves our thanks for contributing their hard work and effort as well. Our gratitude to our honorees, Rabbi Raymond and Rikki Zwerin, Howard and Donna Lutz, Chuck Shom and Abe Wagner remains endless. Also, to all of US - look what we have done! Fifty years and a bright future ahead. Going forward is tremendous and our opportunity is glorious.

I would like to encourage all of you to attend the annual congregational meeting on Friday, June 9 at

5:00pm. in the Abrahams Family Chapel. The annual report will be delivered. Included will be a financial report, a building update including the last phase of our building campaign and the presentation and election of the 2017-2018 Temple Sinai Board of Trustees and Officers.

As the term ends a thank you is extended to the following board members who are leaving as trustees:

Gordan Post, Josh Zucker, Ralph Powell and Sherri Ginsburg. We wish them much success in future Temple endeavors. Todah Rabbah!

We welcome Bob Steine and Kathy Zeiger to the board this next term 2017-2018. We applaud your

willingness to give your time, your talents and yourself as a board member.

In addition to the Board of Trustees' installation at the Shabbat Service that evening of June 9,

congregant Marty Meitus will be honored as Volunteer of the Year. Marty has given so generously of her time, her warmth, her humor, and her caring. The gift of time is priceless. Congratulations to Marty for this well deserved award! As I have commented in the past, the goodwill of those we serve is the foundation of our success.

Betsy Epel will be recognized as well on that Shabbat for the outstanding job she has done directing the Rocky Mountain Rabbinical Council’s Introduction to Judaism program for 16 years. She has helped guide 1,500 people on their journey to learn more about Judaism. Many of her students go on to convert. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to Betsy!

My wish for all of you is that the upcoming summer months are filled with enjoyment, safe travels, and as always, good health and happiness.

Healing Service Thursdays, June 15 and

July 20 at 11:00am

For our Healing Service, we gather together for prayers, meditations, and the warm embrace of friends to renew our sense of hope, strength and healing. The Healing Service is for those who are struggling with their health. The Healing Service is for those struggling with sadness and grief. The Healing Service is for care-givers who seek inspiration as they pray for the welfare of loved ones. All are

Blooming flowers…white clouds traversing a blue, sun-filled sky…a cool breeze on a warm summer day. We can all close our eyes and picture this perfect scene. It is with these memories in mind that Temple Sinai has created our Summer Shabbat Series beginning on June 10 at 10:30am. The goal is simple: take something you and your family would do on a weekend summer day and let’s make it Shabbat. First, we will host a short Shabbat service outside at Temple Sinai, picnic under the sun, and follow it with a soccer game for our kids. In July, children will celebrate Shabbat decorating their bikes with streamers, parading through our parking lot, celebrating our country’s independence while we barbeque with the Denver Fire Department. In August, Shabbat will bring a water park for kids to frolic and play in, while parents remind themselves of the joys of summer, the relationship of mayim (water) and shemesh (the “sun”) as Shabbat fills our hearts and souls. We hope these programs create lasting memories so that when you close your eyes in the fall or winter and think of a warm summer day, the bright blue sky with clouds skipping across the sun, you think of Shabbat…you think of Temple Sinai…you think of your family. We look forward to an incredible summer with you all.

From Brandis Conner Editor

It is a true honor to work at Temple Sinai, and if I haven’t met you yet, I certainly hope to meet you very soon! I started at Temple back in November 2016. I am originally from Connecticut where I worked at a Conservative synagogue. My role at Sinai is multi-faceted. As a member of the support staff, I enjoy working on behalf of the Religious School and on special programs or projects. I also am delighted to take on the role of Communications Coordinator. Working on the Kesher or distributing Snippets as well as handling aspects of ShulCloud (our website) will hopefully make the dissemination of information accessible to all congregants. If you have ideas or suggestions for future Keshers, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Lastly, I want to thank everyone in this community for being so welcoming to me and my son, Landon, who thinks that Temple Sinai is the greatest place to be. I agree.

Our Endowment—Building Our Future

The age-old complaint of synagogue-temple members is “They’re always

asking for money.” Yes, our Temple operates like all other profit or

non-profit businesses: We have operating expenses. For our current

operating budget, we focus on our dues, programming, and fund-raising

events. However, please consider becoming a member of our fast-

growing Sinai Circle. This is simply an honor bestowed upon members,

relatives, and friends of our Temple to acknowledge that such person has made provision in his/

her estate plan (by will or life insurance, for example) to make a contribution to Temple Sinai in

the future. This provision is separate from your current dues commitment and your building

pledge (“Building Our Future”). Sinai Circle, like most endowments of non-profit institutions,

takes a long view. Your gift, by your estate plan, may not become effective (payable) for

decades – all the more reason to commit now.

Volunteer of the Year

Marty Meitus

Marty Meitus came to Denver from Cincinnati, OH more than 36 years ago after marrying her high school sweetheart Doug. She was a Features and Food writer for the Rocky Mountain News until it closed in 2009, re-inventing herself numerous times since then by teaching healthy eating to low income women through Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Nutrition Services, serving as a writing coach and tutor in the Denver Public and Cherry Creek High Schools and working at FEMA in communication after the 2013 floods in Colorado. She has authored two cookbooks, contributed to a third on the foods of the Rocky Mountain region, and was co-author of the book Places to Go with Children in Colorado.

She is the proud mother of two children, Melissa and Jacob, the proud mother-in-law of Josh Liff and the bursting with pride grandmother of Anna Rose Liff. She has always been involved in Jewish organizations, including ORT and Hadassah, and teaching at Hebrew High School. She remembers fondly the year she and her kids volunteered at Shalom Park, calling out bingo numbers.

She has always kept her hand in at Temple Sinai, participating in a Chavurah, serving on the Education Committee, volunteering for the English as a Second Language program, and helping to produce the Temple Sinai cookbook. She has been active in the planning of the Annual Dinner for the last couple of years and this will be her fourth year chairing the Lifelong Jewish Learning Program.

She is finally willing to admit that Denver has better weather than Cincinnati.

Temple Sinai Confirmation Service and Teacher Appreciation Shabbat

Confirmation is more than just the graduation of 10th graders from Religious School. It is a sacred milestone whereby students reaffirm the importance of their Jewish faith, heritage, and community. Confirmation marks the significant progress the students have made since they became B’nei Mitzvah and demonstrates that they have taken seriously their pledge to continue their studies and participate actively in Jewish life.

Temple Sinai families value the importance of Jewish education and active participation in the Jewish community. Each confirmation student has fulfilled his/her pledge to continue studying after becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. These are especially wonderful students who are imbued with a positive feeling of Jewish identity, a solid Jewish education, and a sense of spirituality, compassion, morality and ethical strength.

Of course, every confirmand and religious school student has been inspired by the dedication of our wonderful teachers. These men and women devoted themselves to sharing Jewish values and wisdom to our children.

Fittingly, we honored our confirmands and teachers on Friday, May 12, 2017.

Preschool Celebrates Israel Pre-K students learned about the Western Wall and were so fascinated by it. They looked at many pictures and asked many questions about the wall. They wanted to know what happened to the other walls? What happened to the East Wall? How do plants grow out of the stones?

The Pre-K children loved learning about the Western Wall so much that they continued their exploration during free play and built these incredible replicas of the Western Wall. Check out all the amazing details including the people praying, notes placed in the wall and the plants growing!

When asked about what they built, the children responded with the following:

Mateo: "I thought about the plants so I put the green things in the wall."

Scotty: "I put the tunnels there because I saw the tunnels in the picture. I thought about the people who need to pray so I put the people near the wall."

Avi: "I thought about the real West Wall so I put the notes in our West Wall."

Warren: "I know Mateo put the plants in and I helped build the wall."

Another Successful Year!

Thank you to the leadership team and the many volunteers (including many Temple Sinai members) who helped to make our 9th Annual 9Health Fair a success! By opening the doors of our Temple, we allowed many community members to own their health by taking advantage of the low and no-cost health screenings that we provided. The team is very proud of this effort!
