The Teaching Exchange Pecha Kucha Presentations
Dec 25, 2015
What is Pecha Kucha ????
Pecha Kucha is the Japanese term for the sound of conversation (“chit chat” – can be pronounced peh-chak-cha) It was conceived in Tokyo, back in 2003. by designers Astrid Klein andMark Dytham.
Their original goal was to create a space where designers could share their ideas/passions with others.
However, knowing how dangerous it is to give a designer a microphone… they decided to put some checks in place. In order to prevent speakers from droning on and on, the Pecha Kucha format has restrictions:
20 slides, on display for 20 seconds
Because of this constraint every single Pecha Kucha presentation, regardless of speaker or topic, is exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds in length

• First used PK this academic year in Dynamics of Tourism – as a student debate.
• Extremely positive feedback from students as a student experience.
• Like myself, main challenge was limiting text to 20 seconds. Trying to avoid words and just images is the art of the presentation.
• Example – debate on Digital Detox• Is the Digital Detox product just a clever
marketing strategy or just the revamping of an already established ‘wellness’ tourism product?
Social Purposes:PK nights are held globally in 700 cities. Anything can be presented!!
Many examples on line – some quite obscure and also thought provoking!
