Curriculum OverviewIn the Year 3/4 department there are three classes consisting of a Year 3 class, a Year 3/ 4 class and a Year 4 class.

English- There are two Year 3 and two Year 4 ability sets.

The English groups will be organised in the following way:

Maths- Children will remain in their class.Science- Children will remain in their class.

Curriculum Overview/ EquipmentTopic:

• Skills, knowledge and topic based curriculum• 6 topics per year• Subjects taught: History, Geography, Art, DT, Music,

Computing, French, PSHE and PE, to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum.

• Themed weeks also take place throughout the year, for example, anti-bullying week, e-safety week and health week.

Equipment:Now your child is in the Juniors, to help lesson changes run smoothly, children would benefit from having their own pencil cases, clearly labelled with the equipment they need for their daily lessons. This includes, pencil, ruler, rubber.

Year 3/4 Topics

The Empire (Roman Britain)

The children will discover how the Roman Empire affected our way of life, from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the uprising of Boudicca. We will look at architecture, food, religion, and leisure as well as the structure of the Roman Army which will include constructing a catapult! We will be visiting Chester for the Dewa experience in early October.

Tout sur France (All about France)

In the run up to Christmas we will be exploring the glorious country of France, starting with a look at the different geographical locations. There will be an in depth analysis of Paris, including making an Eiffel Tower, and the children will paint in the style of Monet. There will also be an opportunity to find out about great historical events and figures, such as the French Revolution, Napoleon, and Joan of Arc.

Year 3/4 Topics Tropical Travels (St. Lucia)

In the Spring term we shall be taking a virtual trip to the island nation of St. Lucia. Here, the children will look at the geography and culture of the Caribbean, including language and sport. They will create their own travel brochure and rainforest collage, before attending a themed day in which they will attempt limbo dancing and taste traditional cuisine.

Rocking through the ages (The Stone Age, Iron Age, Scots and Anglo Saxons)

Transporting back thousands of years, the children will get a crash course in pre-history. Here, they will explore our ancestors and origins by becoming archaeologists; digging and excavating in search of useful artefacts. Highlights will include case studies such as The Lindow Man and Skara Brae.

Year 3/4 Topics Attack and Defend! (The Vikings and Anglo Saxons)

During the summer term we will turn our attention to the invasion of the Vikings, and the struggle for the Kingdom of England. We will investigate settlements, place names and village life of the Anglo Saxons and Scots, linking to the previous topic. The children will also learn about longboats, Gods and important figures such as King Alfred.

Raging Rivers and Journeys (Rivers and the Local Community)

The children will finish the year back at home with a close look at local features, in particular our rivers, coastlines hills, and mountains. Linking to work we shall be completing on the water cycle in science, we shall also be observing our own culture, and facets of geographical features that make our community so special.

Structure of the Day…Entry and Exit points for Year 3

The children will now enter and exit the building from the door previously used by Years 5 and 6 on the playground. This will ensure the children have easy access to the playground where they are dropped off and picked up each day. A teaching assistant will be available to bring them in in the morning and a teacher will go out with them at the end of each day to see that a parent or carer has picked them up.

The Timetable

Timetables will be sent out individually as they vary slightly from class to class. The school day begins at 8:55, with registration and reading ending at 9:10 for first lesson. There is a break between 11:00 and 11:15, before lessons until lunch at 12:15. Lunch finishes at 13:15 when the children are registered for the afternoon, and lessons then commence until home time at 15:15.

P.E.Children in Years 3 and 4 will receive:

1 hour PE lesson with class teacher. This will cover a range of skills from striking and fielding activities to indoor dance routines.

Your children will also receive a Friday afternoon session from Premier Sports - this opportunity will give them the chance to experience wide range

of sports.

Swimming.

PE kits - shorts, T-shirts, pumps and jogging bottoms.
