Vol. 11 December 1977 p 49 Design for a fabricated poppet valve throttle was intended for a 1" scale locomotive but might find other applica- tions. " PACHASA, EDWARD T. DESIGN FOR A TWO-CYLINDER COMPRESSED AIR ENGINE TO BE USED IN FLYING MODEL AIR- PLANES THE MODELMAKER Vol. 5 March 1928 pp 49-51 April 1928 pp 68-70 May 1928 pp 90-92 August 1928 p 153 Bear in mind that the internal combus- tion model engines of the time were ter- ribly expensive or just not available. This plan provides a power plant for the hobbyist. The engine, fabricated from bar stock, is not very practical by today's standards but is historically significant. This was a design by Bohouaboy. PALANEK, PAUL J. BUILD THIS OSCILLATING STEAM ENGINE MECHANIXILLUSTRATED Vol. 52 January 1952 pp 100-104+ Here we have another presentation of this popular oscillating steam engine kit. The engine has .625" bore and stroke and is fabricated from a brass casting set. This presentation includes a small boiler. This is the same engine that was presented by Miller and Moore. PALANEK, PAUL J. MINIATURE STEAM ENGINE MECHANIXILLUSTRATED Vol. 59 July 1963 pp 126-129 A tiny, .25" by .25", double acting oscillating cylinder steam engine. This is my favorite of the tiny engines. The engine features bolted-on heads which are most unusual for an engine this size. The engine is machined from bar stock and is shown with a boiler made from a cylindrical carburetor float. A kit was of- fered by Technical Kits, later American Edelstaal. Your scrap box should yield all but the plans. PAQUES, J. J. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR PROPANE HEATING LIVE STEAM Vol. 16 July 1982 pp 22-25 Some ideas for converting your boilers to propane. A design for making a pro- pane tank and burner is included. PARKER, H. H. SKELTON ENGINE' MODELS MADE IN SHEET METAL ILLUSTRATED WORLD Vol. 34 'September 1920 pp 142-143 Unchecked. PARKINSON, KEN A SIMPLE POPPET VALVE THROT- TLE LIVE STEAM PFISTER, HERBERT R. HOW TO BUILD A STEAM TUR- BINE FOR THE SAVANNAH MODEL POPULAR SCIENCE Vol. 178 February 1961 pp 142-146+ A jewel-like turbine design for model ship work with speed reduction and reversing gear suitable for radio control. This tiny turbine has machined rotor blades and was steamed by a Babcock 500 boiler ..The model turbine deserves better than the fate of the prototype USS Savannah. Other segments of this series detail fiberglass hull construction. POLY-WOG - A MODEL STEAM POWERED OUTBOARD LIVE STEAM Vol. 15 October 1981 pp 44-47 Reprint of a 1933 Popular Mechanics article. A 23" pram hull is detailed. The plans include a tubular boiler and an out- board engine which has opposed .562" bore and stroke oscillating, single-acting cylinders. The fabricated propeller is 2" in diameter. Next month "The Guide" will be con- cluded. North Georgia Live steamers partrctpate In THE TASTE OF ATLANTA by Paul Demlanchlk PHOTO BY THE AUTHOR The North Georgia Live Steamers, the Telephone Pioneers, and various Atlanta restaurants joined together for a charity event on April 19, 20 and 21, 1985, to raise money for the Georgia Kidney Foundation. The event, known as "The Taste of Atlanta," featured the best of Atlanta restaurants serving small portions of their specialities at the Southern Bell Center, as well as train rides provided by the North Georgia Live Steamers. Ken Riddle was on hand with his 0-6-0 for the 2¥2 day event that saw NGLS members carry 2,192 passengers around their portable 60' X 120' track, which was placed on particleboard to protect the marble floor of the plaza from "Iron Horse droppings." Through the combined efforts of the three groups, $110,000 was raised and the NGLS have been asked to par- ticipate again next year in this popular event which received extensive news coverage from local TV stations and a cable news network. 48 MODELTECMagazine-August 1985
