MAY 2016 1 THE TARHEEL KNIGHT The Official Publication of the North Carolina Knights of Columbus Greetings to one and all from Fayetteville! Gina and I truly hope this note finds you well and good spirits. We are certainly looking forward to visiting with the council leadership this month as we celebrate all your wonderful accomplishments at the annual state convention. Remember, if you have not made your hotel reservations you can still make reservations, but the hotel has released the block, so you won’t get the convention rate. Please don’t forget to send in your registration for the convention to the convention committee (separate from the hotel reservations). The deadline for that is 13 May. Again, the convention committee has gone out of its way to make sure we have a wonderful time of fraternity and fun during the weekend. We also get to recognize some councils and individuals that have really put forth extra eort this fraternal year. I would like to thank all who are working so hard to meet their membership goals and attain STAR Council. I think the supreme incentive of $4.50 per knight is truly a great one and worth the extra eort to attain that outstanding award. If you are having diculty with the insurance aspect of the STAR Council, please contact your Field Agent and work closely with him. If you don’t have a Field Agent assigned, we have been assured by the General Agent, Chris Mahoney, that he well do all within his power to get our Brother Knights taken care of in the realm of insurance. Again, if all else fails, the Supreme Council has brought back the $100.00 new member annuity. This is designed to be used by those councils that don’t have a Field Agent, but can be used by any council that is trying to attain STAR Council status. Your Financial Secretaries have been given the paperwork for that particular annuity.

If you haven’t noticed, the readings during the Easter Season come from Acts of the Apostles (my favorite book of the Bible) and Revelation (for me the most difficult book of the Bible). I like Acts so much, because it describes the early Church and some of the struggles that the Disciples faced as they attempted to spread the Gospel.

We face struggles every day in our lives, but I would venture to say that we haven’t faced the Religious persecution that the early Church faced. We are blessed to live in a country where we can practice our Religion without fear of reprisal. I would ask that you take a moment and thank God for that freedom. Pray for those who don’t have that freedom and, today, are being persecuted simply for being a Christian.

Until next month, may the Peace of Christ be with each of you!

Lori and I sure hope you are planning to attend. We are looking forward to spending time with you to find out more of what great programs you have been working on.

To be ready for the NC State Convention, you will want to take one last look at the 2016 Countdown to Convention check list. If contains many very important tasks that you will want to complete before arriving at the convention. It will help you be ready to enjoy the weekend.

For many of these items, there is additional information on the State website www.kofcnc.org

It is not too late to submit the names of Brothers that have gone to meet the Lord this past year. We want to

include them in our necrology at the State Convention Mass. We what to read the names of as many Brothers as we can. We feel it is important to recognize those that have served the Lord through their work within the Knights of Columbus.

Every year we collect money for Right to Life and the Bishop’s Fund. The State Council then uses that money to help the Right to Life cause or our Bishops. Please bring your checks, made out to Knights of Columbus NC State Council, to the convention. If you don’t plan to attend the convention, you can mail your check to me at 143 Talford Drive, Wendell, NC. Thank you for your help.

Don’t forget to send in the money that your Council has collected for the Penny-a-Day fund.

If I can ever serve you in any way, please let me know. I am here to serve you.

STATE WARDEN

Brothers All, Vivat Jesus!

Where has all the time gone? It seems like only yesterday we were gathering in Fayetteville for the Organization Meeting preparing to take on the challenges of the new Fraternal Year. Now we are about to gather for our annual State Convention to celebrate the success of the past year. Time really does fly by. I want to thank all of you for your diligence in completing and submitting your required forms throughout the year. We had have 100% compliance up until now and I would like to close out the year with the perfect record. To do this, we are requesting that you bring your Columbian Award application (SP7) to the Convention to turn in your state copy. This is similar to what you did at the Mid-Year meeting with the 1728 and 4484. Please make sure that you bring a hard copy with you. If there is a program that you have not completed yet, but have scheduled prior to the June 30 deadline, you can in good faith report the program in advance. Remember, the June 30 deadline is a firm deadline and NO submissions after this date will be accepted. This is a mandatory report for obtaining STAR status and every year we have Councils that miss achieving their STAR Council award simply by not completing the SP7. What a shame for the hard working people of your Council that have done everything asked of them but are not recognized due to not filing the proper paperwork.I also want to request that if your Council has not submitted your Form 1295 Audit due February 15th, please do so as soon as possible. There are current 10 Councils outstanding. If you recall from the Mid-Year meeting that in order to obtain STAR Council you must remaining in good standing with Supreme. This means completing your Audits. Finally, it is time to start looking forward to next year. By now you should have put together a list of officer candidates to be elected in the next few months. As soon as you have your elections you need to file the Officers Chosen for Term (Form 185) as well as complete the State Directory form on the NC State Council website. Filing the Form 185 does not update the contact information in the State Website. Please update the directory form as soon as possible so that important communications can be sent to the proper personnel.I look forward to seeing you in Winston-Salem at the State Convention where we celebrate all of the great accomplishments over the past Fraternal Year.

Vivat Jesus,

Chris LosackState Warden [email protected]

FAMILY LIFE DIRECTOR (CONTINUED)

The Family Fully Alive

April addressed the idea of our kids becoming parents and spouses – responsible persons. This reminded me of the time I proposed we take my granddaughters on a hike in a forest preserve. I was warned they’d get bored, tire and tease each other, which happened immediately. I took them aside and told them, “We need your help! If we get on the wrong paths we might find ourselves in the woods after dark. We need you to find the orange triangles on the trees that mark OUR path.” Boom! They shot off and scoured the woods for those triangles. Everyone had a great time and the girls slept very well that night. Giving them a vital task made all the difference – they were a part of the adventure and they learned about responsibility. (Stretching an analogy …. Try giving new 1st Degree members of your council small responsible tasks. You may find this can quickly transform them into interested and active members and future council leaders)May’s topic concerns work and life balance. Work, however, is not a punishment but a way of sharing in God’s on-going process of creation. He made us in His image and likeness and in doing so, He also gave us a measure of His drive to build and be creative. It seems then that we are hard-wired to work and especially to do God’s work. Have you known someone who didn’t work. What were their lives like? We’ve all probably heard accounts of jackpot winners who no longer have to work. Without goals and the discipline of some sort of work 90% of those ‘winners’ see their lives turn into an economic, social and moral wreck. But there are limits – even God rested on the seventh day! Consider the Jews in Egypt. When they were forced to labor up to and beyond the breaking point, God heard their cries and delivered them. And when they set out for the Promised Land, He also made sure they rested on that seventh day. In our world, the Millennial generation places a high priority on balance between career and family life when they seek employment, and that’s precisely what the Family Fully Alive initiative is advocating! But work should be honest work and it is in our Christian ethic to help those who are truly in need by sharing a part of those things with which we’ve been blessed. In the New Testament St Paul repeatedly tells how he supported himself by working as a tentmaker so as to avoid living off the donations of the new Christian communities he visited. We are also told in Acts, Chapter 4 how the fruit of the early Christians’ labor was laid at the feet of the elders so that those who were needy could eat. My Worthy Chairman, Patrick Okoronkwo, will be quick to tell you that sounds a lot like our Food for Families Program! In my case, I work a part time job on a construction project because it interests me and promises to improve our state’s economy and mobility. I work with my town’s planning board in the hopes of introducing some measure of new prosperity to overcome a 30% poverty rate. My work with the Knights of Columbus is challenging and more creative than many jobs I’ve held. Oh yes, I’m working harder in retirement than I did when I was fully employed. But it doesn’t seem like work because I enjoy it – it’s perhaps more like FUN!Ah, but now maybe we see another reason why God created Eve – to provide us with wives who will sternly warn us whenever we’re having too much fun!

Vivat Jesus, guys,Fred BurtonNC Family Director, NC Silver Rose Chair

VETERANS AFFAIRS AND VAVS

Greetings Brothers and Grand Knights,Vivat Jesus! In the month of May, we will be celebrating two important dates in honor of our Veterans: Saturday, May 21st “Arm Forces Day” and Monday, May 30th “Memorial Day”. Most Americans will only view these two dates, as Holidays. I would like to request that you, my Brother Knight, take the extra step of doing something positive to celebrate the sacrifices that our men and women in the Military have given in defense of our freedom.National Wheel Chair Games: Salt Lake City, Utah-June 26-July 3, 2016 The following VA’s Durham (sending 8 Veterans), Salisbury (sending 17 Veterans) and Fayetteville (sending 13 Veterans). The Knights of Columbus have been supporting these Games (NWCG) for the past eight years. The Knights have been requested to provide financial support to assist these Veterans to attend the Games. The cost for room (one week- two Veterans sharing) is $1,000. Airfare is approximately $550. Per Veteran. Some Councils and Brother Knights have stepped up to provide funding to assist and support these Veterans. We are STILL IN NEED of additional dollars to fund the cost of their trips. The VA provides NO FUNDING for this program. If your Council has not yet considered making a donation to support the Veterans, I respectfully request your support. Details of this program have been published in the January through April Tar Heel Knight. As Brother Knights this is an excellent opportunity to show your support of our principle, “Charity”, by making a personal $$$ donation. Every dollar is critical! Leadership: By this time, your Council has prepared your slate of officers for the year 2016-2017. I want to thank the existing GK and Officers for their support of the VAVS Programs. In order to support the many needs of our Veterans and VAVS Programs, I would like to suggest that you consider funding in your budget in the coming year for such programs as Coats for Veterans, The National Wheel Chair Games, Wounded Warriors, USOs, and special needs throughout the year. GK, please contact the FN of the Assembly your Council is assigned (the month of July) and discuss how you and he, in cooperation of the Council/Assembly membership to support our Veterans. VAVS Representatives and Deputy Reps: I am still in need of support of the Fayetteville, Asheville and Salisbury VA Medical Centers. Communications and the VA and the Assembly/Councils in the needs of our Veterans. Details of the job and VAVS Program are available on the State Website under Fourth Degree (VA Voluntary Service-Representative and Deputy Representative Volunteer Training).Healthcare Centers in Kernersville, Charlotte and Fayetteville: Volunteers are needed in all facilities. Contact your GK if interested in participating. No Veterans Dies Alone: Veterans in our Hospice and Community Living Centers often do not have any relatives near for support at this time. The medical staff provides the best care they can. Volunteers who are willing to provide comfort to these Veterans during their last days will receive Hospice Training by the VA. This is one of our Works of Mercy in The Year of Mercy.
