Tumwater Theatre Company’s fall production is William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, but here’s the twist: it is set in a post-apocalyptic land, costumed in the style of Mad Max: Fury Road. Heidi Fredericks, Tumwater’s drama teacher, co-directs with Lauren O’Neill. Junior Maddie Jaeger stage manages the show, making sure that everything goes smooth-ly backstage. Macbeth is a story of murder and betrayal, and is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Plus, it has plenty of spooky apparitions to boot! La Niña

When most people hear the names El Niño or La Niña, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the forgotten lessons of a past spanish class. However, El Niño and La Niña represent something much

bigger than the “children” they are named after. El Niño and La Niña are harsh weather occurrences that happen during the winter in a cycle that spans over several years. This winter, El Niño is arriving and La Niña

may follow, which could prove to be a huge and disastrous event.

The ocean warms up a few degrees and affects the general climate of the Pacific Ocean during El

Niño. These changes happen about every 3-7 years. This year, El Niño is in full swing and is likely to

last into early 2016. What does this mean for us in America? In Washington, this can mean an

excessive drought, while in southern states this can cause massive flooding. Likely this will also

come to mean a milder winter, with less snow and rain than normal. After an El Niño phase, La Niña

is likely to follow in the next few years.

La Niña is a change in the climate of the Pacific Ocean when the ocean cools down and affects the

climate around it. La Niña can occur every 2-7 years, but since 1975, it has occured less frequently. La Niña has not taken place for a while, but the cy-cle is overdue and it could commence very soon. In a La Niña winter, we can expect very cold weather in washington, possibly even record breaking. In the South, winter will be hotter than average and

could prove to be very different than normal.
