Nelson County Democrats held their County Convention at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at in the City Council Meeting Room for the purposes of electing a new Democratic Executive Committee for a four-year term, and select- ing delegates to the State Democratic Convention in Louisville on June 2. Precinct officers who were elected at the Precinct Conventions on March 31, nominated and voted for 10 men and 10 women and one youth to constitute the Nelson County Democratic Executive Committee for the next four years. Those nominated and elected were Margie Bradford, Dixie Hibbs, Howard Keene, Norma Rapier, Mayor Bill Sheckles, Dick Heaton, Jim Clark, Frankie Cambron, Kenny Fogle, Magistrate Keith Metcalfe, Tom Donan, Lyda Moore, Mary Jane Greenwell, Mary K. Drake, Merle Brady, DeeDee Ford Keene, Janice Donan, C. Paul McCoy, Lance Blanford, Betty Seay, and Audrey Haydon as the Youth representative. Democratic Woman's Club President Anne Hamilton is an ex- officio member. Margie Bradford was elected Chairman, and Howard Keene was elected as Vice-Chair. Jim Clark was appointed as Treasurer and Mary Jane Greenwell as Secretary. The next meeting date for the new committee is May 14. Delegates were chosen to attend the Democratic State Convention for the purposes of electing a new State Central Committee on June 2, and to attend the Congressional Caucuses to choose delegates to the National Democratic Convention Sept. 3-6. Those delegates include Mayor Bill Sheckles, Democratic Vice Chair Howard Keene, DeeDee Ford Keene, Tom Donan, Adam Martinez, Lance Blanford, and alternate, Magistrate Keith Metcalfe. The 18- week academy provides new law enforcement officers throughout the state with an educational foundation for success through quality criminal justice training. Lewis is employed by the City of Springfield Police Department. He is a 2007 graduate of Bardstown High School, and was previously a member of the semi-pro- fessional football team, Kentucky Wolverines. He is the son of Bardstown Assistant Police Chief, Major Ray Lewis, and the grandson of the late James W. and Kathryn P. Lewis. In the fall of 2000, Cantrell was awarded Alumni of the Year for Creative Achievement by the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley where he had received his Masters’ Degree in Fine Art with a double emphasis in ceram- ics and painting. On April 21, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln is awarding Cantrell with this award at its Honors Day Awards Dinner at the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. At the same time the Sheldon Museum of Art will exhibit two Cantrell oils that are already in its permanent collection as well as the painting, “Taking Flight,” which the museum is con- sidering for acquisition. Cantrell received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education degree from the University in 1958 and pro- ceeded to teach art for 14 years in Nebraska, Colorado and Berea College in Kentucky before moving to Bardstown in 1971 to set up his independ- ent studios in Spalding Hall. The Kentucky Arts Council in Frankfort has received a number of nomi- nations recommending Cantrell for the Governor’s Award in Art. Local artist to be honored with Alumni of Year award from University of Nebraska The Sheldon Museum of Art is considering “Taking Flight” as its next acquisition from Jim Cantrell. The museum already has two of his pieces in its permanent collection. The Sutton Studio opens The Sutton Studio for the Performing Arts celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting on Thursday.
