Qtilntard's wire haired r, Wire Boy of Palwiton. con- tinued hie sensational American career by capturing the special for best of 1:1 breed and then winning the trophy for best doc or bitch In the annual lUturo of the Nassau County Kennel Club, which opened the spring circuit of out- door dog shown at Belmont I'nrl;. long Inland, yesterday. The victory gave Wire Boy the points needed to make lilm a champion. This show will ko down In history a one of the beat conducted and prettiest benched shows seen on the Kreen. The show waa distinctive In the num- ber of new docs Introduced for the Hist time to the show ring. Among them nere II. Menken's English bulldog Duko VIII., a very promising sou of the l:ito ltayardo; Mrs. J. C. Mallory's Peking- ese spaniels, Wonchl of Kgham nnd Nea Chlnky Chu, two very tine specimens shown here for the Drat time: John IZ. llorrax'u massive brlndle pled Kngllsh bulldog, Iord Vernx, which lie pur- chased at the recent Westminster show, where he wan on the bench for exhibi- tion only. Lotd Veray Is one of the heaviest boned dogs on Ce bench y, John K. lttid's Airedale terrier Heather waa another newcomer, a high quality young dog, which won tlrst novice, first Junior and second American bred, being defeated by his r, Oee Long Cadet, In the later clnss. George V. Neat of Thomaston, Conn., who long has been Identified with the tloaton terrier, made his debut as Judge nnd was greeted by n most flattering entry of dogs of quality. Mrs. D. I). Dunn's Some Nobby Hoy won three firsts, but met defeat in the winner's class by George Parker's Cllpstone Star nnd rtalph Cnhn's Crown Prince. Mr. Neat's placlngs were of a consistency that was as pleasing as It Is rare In the lloiton classes. Alrednle terriers were out In force. Home disappointment was occasioned by the absence of the unbeaten Patrick Oorang, which was, entered, hut failed to show up In the' ring. The young American bred Oee Long Cadet repeated his charily show performance of going frough his classes to winners. Quite an upset occurred In the Eng- lish bulldog bitch class for winners when Champion Crlssle Denton nnd Champion Florence Ilhundha were placed over the Rockllffe Kennels' great Cham- pion Oak Nana, considered by many American and English Judges to be the greatest bitch ever seen In this coun- try. This class brought out three of the best of this breed and Oak Nana's not even getting reserve winners waa a shock to the rlngslJers. In Sealyham terriers W. Iloss Proc- tor's famous Brookdale Kennels scored with tho International Champion Ivo Carodoc, which defeated the Oreentree Kennels' recently 'Imported Sir Roger In the dog class, and with Dtrkdale I3ess, a daughter of Mr. Proctor's sensational Champion Oesalma. In the bitch classes. Mrs. C. Hnlstead Yates, who Judged the Dalmatian and Oerman sheepdog classes, made her Initial appearance In the ring as a Judge of the latter breed, although she has officiated as a Dalma- tian Judge on many occasions before yesterday. An exhibit that caused considerable attention was a magnificent string of Old English sheepdogs exhlhtlrd by Mrs. Tyler Morse, whose kennel houses some of the finest specimens of this breed In America. A very good entry of oolites was out under Judge Patrick Tully, one of the oldest collie breeJers In America, who says that the high quality of the dif- ferent specimens was n surprise. The winner, Mrs. May McCurdj's Plncwood Petmgrad, a beautiful headed doc with elegant coat and shown In Brand form, won from Fred Lelgliton's HmvRllI Leader, a fine sable nnd white that pressed the winner closely. Leader Is Ju.it going out of coat and was handicapped slightly by this. One of the best bitches In this coun- try at the present time la the winner Oak Jllll Iris, which won over Hal-ste- Phoebe, another beautiful speci- men showing lots of quality. Mrs. A. L. Holland's Pekingese Catrn-whl- n Tlnto, recently purchased from England at a record price, made her first appearance before local exhibitors and annexed the winner's prlre, the runner up being Mrs. A. McCluro Hal-ley- 's sensational American bred puppy Quena of Llenrud, which went from puppy to resen-- winners, beating a strong field In the American bred class. This feat Is all the more remarkable as Quena Is only t months of age. The Brussels Orlffon, champion Iron City Hercules, owned by Mrs. B, H. Throop, won the special for the best toy In the show, defeating many champion Pekingese and Pomeranians. Ttie good attendance was made up largely of well known society folk. The Oreat Neck, Meadow Brook, Wheatly inils, Hempstead, Rockaway and other Long Island colonies sent many repre- sentatives, and even Westchester was well represented. Among those who watched the placing with Interest were Mr. and Mrs, Tyler Morse. Miss Marlon Kennedy, Mrs. Roy A, Ralney, Oram Notman, Mr. and Mrs. Vemon Castle, neatrlce ile Coppet, W, Ross Proctor. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Taylor, Mrs. Her- bert Elllthorne, Mrs. Fred Lane, Dr. and Mrn. E. It, Berendsohn, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Strauss, Henry T. Klelt-ma- Mrs. Palmer Campbell, Mrs. Haley Flske, Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Clarke, Morris Kinney, Robert Sedgwick, Jr., Alfred B. Mnclay, Miss Anna Hands, Mrs. A. M, Hunter, Mrs. E. L. (Irace, Sir. and Mm. Franklin L. Hutton, Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Harby. Mr. and Mrs. O. Foster Rawlins, Mrs. Arlc Winston and Mrs. Benjamin II. Throop. No criticism of the variety classes ts necessary. It may be said, however, that Judges Messrs. I)e Mund. Payne and Wolcott carried the ringside critics with them In nearly all of their awards, which Is n good deal to any when tha mixed nature of the competition is con- sidered. In wire hatred fog terriers the un- - beatable, brace, Wire Boy of Paignton and Holmbury Reeve, owned by Oeorge Qulntnrd, captured the winners roaette In the dog and bltoh class. With th coming spring and summer shows at which the temperature Is con tinuously high and the atmosphere hu- - mid nnd oppressive, it Is highly probable that nil rlogi taken out of their usual surrotimllnVs nnd conditions of life and ' exposed to nceptlonnt heat and excite- ment will he affected. SH'clnl precautions sbould be taken to ;ivolil strlous constviuences, For eev-r- days before lending or taking k ilog to a show oaroful attention should lie paid to Its general condition. Con- stipation must l guarded tigalnst and the iKJWfls regulated by correct dieting nnd If a purge In necessary It nevt r should he given Just before de- parting for a xhow but about two or thrm il.iys before so that the dog will havo miltlclent time to assume Its nor- mal before the Journoy Is undertaken. I)r not give the dog u heavy meal before starting even If the trip Is a long one, a a light meal at this time la much more benerlctal. Plenty of fresh cold water Is necessary, not In unlimited quantities, but often enough to prevent distress. In sultry weather even dogs with roomy baskets are liable to considerable troublo from the heat Nervous animals ulwnys should haws a dose of bromide administered before starting and If need- ful repeated In from one to two hours If the dog Is accompanied. For iidult Pomeranians, Pekingese, Griffons, Ac., give five grains In a of water. Kor adult French bulldogs, Boston terrier., fox terriers, Ac, tern grains In ileowjrtsponnfu) of water. Kor ndult bulldogs, Airedales, Irish terrlerr, Ac,, fifteen grains In tablespoon-fu- l of water. Tor adult Great Danes, BL Bernards, Ac thirty grains In two tablespoonfuis of water. These doses may be given twice every day of the show If the nervous system Is nffecKd. If dogs are found unconscious do not Is attempt to pour anything down their throats. Dip the finger In raw brandy Is and rub the Inside of the lips and gums with It. Careful, artificial respiration may bo employed If the breathing Is a shallow, and smelling salts are some- times useful. These remedies should be ri sorted to If the unconsciousness Is brought on by suffocation or heart fail- ure. Tor convulsions apply cold water com- presses to the head, put the dog In a cool, dark place and give the necessary dotes of bromide. It Is a good plan to tnke both bromide and brandy to the show. Hponglng the mouth out frequent- ly with cold water Is to be recommended. Do not ship dogs In tho heat of the day, hut always If possible let them trnvel nt night. Do not put more than one dog In each crate and give each dog too much room rather than too llttlo. Sew Specials for Seottles. That the question or Judges Is one of the most Important that confronts the fancy y Is an axiom. Every fancier of the dog Is or ought to be vitally Interested In the men selected to pass on Ms favorite breed, The Judges who place the clots at shows are the edu- cators of Jhe fancy. Kor that reason the Ideals of most breeder are guided by those who Judge, All bench rhow committees know that the success or failure of their show de- pends largely on tho alate of Judges which they appoint. The handlers aleo aro Influenced by the names of those who are to make the awards and many specialty clubs have withheld their spe- cials from a show because the Judge at tho fixture did not appeal to them as Munlltled. The easiest way to hurt the fancy Is In an unwise selection of Judges. The selection should be carefully made nnd committees should see that the same Judges do not place the same breeds at too many shows. It Is unwise for a specialty club to submit names to show secretaries of novices, of members wno are good fellows or have bought a couple of good dogs but who know noth- ing of the standard of the breed they are to Judge. Brery specialty club's list of Judges should be made up ef man who are competent and will do the right thing by the club and the doc irre- spective of any pontics or personal friendship for one exhibitor orer another. The solution of the Judging problem Is to let the best men be placed In the ring, the ones who oan and will ptaoe the dogs as they think they approach tho standard. There are many men who are competent to place at least one breed correctly and the summer shows should try to find these men and bring them out and In thla way Increase the number'of tried and true Judgea. This match was one of the most successful affalra held by this young organisation and much credit Is due Robert Waters, tho hustling secretary of this club, for his efforts, which have materially helped In making the matched the successes they have been.
