The Suffolk County Police ALUMNI NEWS March 2019 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE You know you are having a good day when you get a chance to see a good bagpipe band performance. The S.C.P.D. Alumni reunion members and guests were blessed with three awesome days of Pipe & Drum performances by our own astounding Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Band. The single piper rendition of “Amazing Grace” at our annual corporate required meeting left not one dry eye in the room. It was only surpassed by the complete band rendition of this dirge played at the Banquet. We have numerous pictures and videos which we will get published on a website in the near future. Hopefully we can get the Band to return for next year’s reunion! Another pleasant bonus was the attendance by a representative from our the S.C.P.D. P.B.A., Bob Cappadonna. P.B.A. Liaison Officer Lou Civello had to cancel his previous scheduled appearance due to the tragic loss of active Fifth Precinct Officer Fadi Rafeh. I can’t tell how much the P.B.A. Presence meant to our organization. For years, I have listened to members complain that they felt abandoned by their line organizations. Truth is the P.B.A. has always supported our organization. In fact, the P.B.A. and other line organizations in the past have made monetary donations and given support to help us lay the foundation on which we built our organization. We now find ourselves in a position to give back to the P.B.A. with the support of our members. We have reached the point where we can hopefully be a positive “resource” to our active members and line organizations. Besides, we are molding a retiree’s organization which, hopefully, will endure everlastingly alongside the S.C.P.D. P.B.A. To our active duty Brothers and Sisters, be reminded you will all be joining our ranks someday. We hope to draft some of the pool of your leadership talent in the P.B.A. and other line organizations for our Association. Friday’s highlight was an appearance of our own S.C.P.D. Alumni Member Fred Fernez. Fred is ninety years old, a veteran of the S.C.P.D., and a retired Chief of the Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, Police Department. He still plays golf two days a week! Fred wrote and was awarded the first Federal Grant for the S.C.P.D. He wrote many more in his S.C.P.D. career including the grant to set up the Evidence Technicians Unit. He was accompanied by his son Stephen, who is retired from the local Florida Sheriff’s Department. Look for Pictures and video’s on our website. I am pleased to report that the Suffolk County Police Alumni Association is considered one of the most active and robust police retirement organization in the nation. We represent in excess of 2500 police retirees in eighteen states. Our website receives in excess of 125 visits every day. We have the ability to update information within 24 to 48 hours. We also have a link on the new P.B.A. website. Our extremely popular weekly e-mail bulletin, “Heard It On F-2”, has 1550 subscribers. Our weekly rate of “opened” messages averages about 65%, which is very high. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 PLEASE SEND IN YOUR 2019 DUES WITH ANY CHANGES IN YOUR PERSONAL DATA AND THE BENEFICIARY FORM

VICE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Hi Everybody.
I hope everyone has a Happy New Year and are safe and well. For you that are up
North - please stay warm.
Reference my meetings with Chief Cameron and Lou Civello of the P.B.A., it has
improved the interactions with the Alumni. I hope it will continue in the future.
Retired Deputy Inspector Doug Rilling, who is now Alumni Board Member on the Island, ran the Alumni
Annual Holiday Luncheon at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point. I was unable to attend this year. All the
reports I have gotten were good. Doug stated that there were almost no retirees from the west end of the
County. Doug and I will try to find a more central location so more west end retirees will attend. I would
appreciate any suggestions.
It is that time of the year “Dues Are Due”. Thanks to the members that have already sent their dues in, it stops
us from being overwhelmed with paperwork. Please send in your dues with the dues notification form you
received with any changes, especially any changes to your beneficiary. If you have any questions, please call
me at 352-688-8363, e-mail [email protected], or call the Alumni phone number 352-345-1778. Please
print your information and not like you are signing UTT's.
The Alumni held its 2019 reunion this past month with Nassau Blues which is an organization of retired
Nassau County Officers. The Alumni invited the Suffolk County Emerald Society Pipe Band to come and
perform. Twelve members came and performed numerous times with great success. I want to thank Jack and
Cindy Scott, Bob and Barbara Timm and Bob and Mary Sanchez for their work running the reunion.
I have run out of things to write about. I hope everyone stays safe, well, and you up north stay warm. Most
importantly, keep beating the system by getting those checks.
If anyone has a relative down here and you would like some one to check on them, please contact me. I will
attempt to get someone to do it or I will myself.
Fraternally Yours
Ron Aimes
