The Paper Contain, briefing about the Hero Honda Passion
Model Bike and Innovation Stages for Sustainability. Hero
Honda Passion bike was launched on 2001, Up to now Hero Honda
Passion Bike took many innovation changes in the style. The
paper covers the stages of Hero Honda Passion and Consumer
Opinion about the Hero Honda Passion.
Innovation is one of those evergreen topics forever
featured in business school reviews, classrooms and business
magazines. The link to sustainability, however, is new, and is
steadily replacing old thinking that saw corporate
responsibility mainly as a way to keep a company's reputation
out of trouble. According to the Brundtland Report’ 1987
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs
of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs." It contains within it
two key concepts:
The concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs
of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be
given; and
The idea of limitations imposed by the state of
technology and social organization on the environment's
ability to meet present and future needs."
Page 2
Companies looking to get this right need to think about
innovation for sustainability in three ways: products,
processes, and business models. One of the keys to
innovation for sustainability is opening up the process of
product, process, and business model design to a wider
community, something that technology and growing comfort
with stakeholders makes more possible than ever.

What Is Innovation Management?
Innovation management is the discipline of managing processes
in innovation. It can be used to develop both product and
organizational innovation. Without proper processes, it is not
possible for R&D to be efficient; innovation management
includes a set of tools that allow managers and engineers to
cooperate with a common understanding of goals and processes.
The focus of innovation management is to allow the
organization to respond to an external or internal
opportunity, and use its creative efforts to introduce new
ideas, processes or products. Importantly, innovation
management is not relegated to R&D; it involves workers at
every level in contributing creatively to a company's
development, manufacturing, and marketing. By utilizing
appropriate innovation management tools, management can
trigger and deploy the creative juices of the whole work force
towards the continuous development of a company. The process
can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization,
technology and market by iterating series of activities:
search, select, implement and capture.
Page 4
Innovation processes can either be pushed or pulled through
development. A pushed process is based on existing or newly
invented technology, that the organization has access to, and
tries to find profitable applications to use this technology.
A pulled process tries to find areas where customer’s needs
are not met, and then focus development efforts to find
solutions to those needs. To succeed with either method, an
understanding of both the market and the technical problems
are needed. By creating multi-functional development teams,
containing engineers and marketers, both dimensions can be
solved. The lifetime (or product lifecycle) of new products is
steadily getting shorter; increased competition therefore
forces companies reduce the time to market. Innovation
managers must therefore decrease development time, without
sacrificing quality or meeting the needs of the market.
What Is Sustainable Innovation?
Sustainable innovation means: Innovating toward
sustainability and Sustainable process for innovation.
Fig 1:- Sustainable Development
Page 5
Result-orientation: Innovating Toward Sustainability
First of all, innovations should be measured by the results
that they generate. Besides bringing in more direct financial
rewards through innovation, for-profit organizations should
also measure the impact that innovations make to
sustainability. Innovative efforts to increase sustainability
may not directly contribute to profitability in a short-term
view, but they are essential in order to keep companies
competitive and seek future growth. Many companies may have
already learned their lesson that going straight towards money
doesn’t work so well nowadays. That being said, sustainable
innovation is the approach a company can use in order to make
changes that contributes to the goodness of the natural
environment and society, in the mean time, the lasting
profitability to those who conduct the changes.
Process-orientation: Sustainable Process for Innovations
Undoubtedly, there are uncertainties in innovative results,
but I feel innovation as a process should be more certain, or
in other words, more sustainable. Since “sustainable” is such
a vague word, I’d like to expand it into three different
adjectives.
Simple: A lengthy or complicated innovation process will lead
to missed opportunities or simply kill ideas (some might be
highly valuable) in the cradle.
Page 6
Repeatable: Although innovative results can be valuable
because they make helpful differences, the process of making
these distinctions shouldn’t be any different from time to
time (or in other words, should be repeatable) so innovation
is more manageable and the cost of innovation is minimized.
Flexible: A rigid process might be good for standardized tasks
such as the ones being handled in an enterprise resource
planning (ERP) system but not so good for innovations, which
highly rely on outside-the-box thinking and knowledge
collaboration.
So, we can clearly analyze from the above description that in
today’s competitive world placing right thought in the right
place can spell the difference between Profit and Loss, and
thus it becomes very important for an individual or an
organization to walk in parallel with the advancements that is
taking place with the growth of technology, for their
sustenance in today’s market.

Hero Honda Passion: History/Timeline [2001-2010]
The history and time line of one of the best selling 100 cc
bikes in India, the Hero Honda Passion
When a common man in India thinks of buying an "affordable,
good looking/stylish motorcycle which also returns good fuel
efficiency", the first name that probably comes to his mind is
the "Hero Honda Passion".
And it’s for good reason actually. After successfully
surviving in India's thriving, but tough to crack two wheeler
markets for nearly 10 years, the Hero Honda Passion has now
become a huge brand. It is probably second in terms of sales,
to its cousin the Hero Honda Splendor (which is the world's largest
selling motorcycle model).
In the meanwhile Hero Honda has stuck to its promise of
offering "Style" right from the launch of the Passion. The tag
line for the Hero Honda Passion might have transformed from
"When Style Matters" to a more "desi" "Ab Sirf Style Hi Style Bolega" for
the Passion Pro in 2010, but Hero Honda has been consistent
with its message.

Hero Honda Passion [2001]
Peak Power: 7.5 Ps @ 8000 RPM
Tag line: When Style Matters
Launched in Early 2001, the Passion was a stylish alternative
to the plain Jane Hero Honda Splendor. Mechanically the engine
on the Passion was (and still continues to be) same as that of the
Splendor. The Humble horizontally laid 97 cc engine used to
pump out 7.5 Ps of max, Power at 8000 RPM.
Physically, the Passion appeared different to the Splendor due
to the new body panels, headlight, and tail light and seat

profile used. As far as I remember the Passion was the first
motorcycle in India to feature a clear lens headlamp.

Hero Honda Passion Plus [2003]
Peak Power: 7.5 Ps @ 8000 RPM

The Passion got its first cosmetic upgrade in 2003 and also got “Plus” attached to its name. The cosmetic changes were a new sticker job, an alloy rear grab rail, a new silencer heat shield and clear lens turn indicators.
Passion plus Specifications:

Hero Honda Passion Plus (with alloy wheels) [2007]

The next upgrade of the Passion Plus came in 2007 when it got
a fresh set of stickers and new paint scheme and also black
paint on the engine covers and black colored alloy wheels.
Fig 5 Hero Honda Passion Plus
The "Passion Plus" logo also got a redesign and was now pasted
on the tank instead of on the side panels as on the earlier
variants.
Hero Honda Passion Pro [2008]
Peak Power: 7.8 Ps @ 7500 RPM
Tag line: Ab Sirf Style Bolega
By the end of 2008 the Passion got the "Pro" naming and also a
Page 14
new design headlamp, sticker job and colour schemes. The
exhaust pipe was now finished in matt black colour instead of
the stainless steel as found on the earlier variants.
Most significantly the Passion Pro now got an Electric Start
(Hero Honda prefers to call it "Power start") variant. The Passion Plus
model was around for sometime but eventually has been
discontinued now.

Hero Honda Passion Pro (APDV) [2010]
Peak Power: 7.8 Ps @ 7500 RPM
Page 15
Tag line: Ab Sirf Style Hi Style Bolega
In the beginning of 2010, the Passion Pro got its latest
upgrade as the "Passion Pro APDV". APDV stands for "Advanced
Pro Series Digital Variable Ignition System". The most
significant change visually was a new edgy Tail Lamp and a
Digital Display, the speedometer is still analog though.
The exhaust outlet at the end of the silencer pipe became a
bit stubby (reportedly the new Passion Pro APDV has got its engine
tweaked to comply with the BS III norms for two wheelers). The rear mud
flap has also got a slight redesign which along with the sharp
tail lamp makes the rear portion of the bike look chunky.
The various advancements in the different models of the
Passion bike clearly indicates that for the sustenance of the
company according to the time and technology advancement; the
innovative changes are must.
