STAFF

From the Pastor’s Desk—

Fall is upon us, which means students have returned to school, the weather is becoming cooler, leaves are changing color and everything is turning pumpkin! God has been busy!

Here at Newark United Methodist Church, things have been busy as well. We had a wonderful kick-off to our children’s programs. Sara and her team have worked tirelessly over the summer to breathe some life back into our Sunday School. And God has blessed their efforts. There are over forty children participating in Sunday School. Praise be to God!

We also kicked off our Youth Group and Confirmation programs with over ten children involved in these programs. Youth Group is traveling through “Destination Unknown”. Each month, the young people will embark on a journey to an unknown destination in order to experience God in a new way.

The Confirmation class will be working through the “Confirm” program in an effort to understand what it means to be a Methodist and a Christian.

As with any building program, rebuilding takes people, it takes time, and it takes money. The Sunday School program has a growing “wish list”, as does the Youth Group. Please consider making a special offering to the Christian Education Program. Invest in the future of the church! You will find that your gifts will prove fruitful.

Also, please keep these programs in your hearts and in your prayers.

Check out the newly remodeled Sunday School rooms on your way to church…and don’t forget to enjoy this beautiful season of color that God has creatively blessed us with. Savor that pumpkin spice!

-Pastor Tina

A Farewell and Thank You From Ned

Dear congregation of NUMC:

After much thought and prayer, I have made the decision to submit my resignation as Director of Music Ministries at NUMC. I have thoroughly enjoyed my seven years at NUMC. The ensembles are wonderful and the congregation of NUMC is truly the kindest I have ever encountered.

I have accepted the position of Director of Music/Youth & Family Ministries at an ELCA congregation in NJ. Also, the NJ Synod of the ELCA has invited me to go through the candidacy process to become an ordained deacon in the ELCA. The combination of the Music/Youth position at the church and being ordained as a deacon will put all of my music and seminary training into practice in one job and location.

My last Sunday at NUMC will be October 20 and my last workday will be Thursday, October 24. I will forever cherish our time together.

-Ned Perwo

Congregation in Action

Sharing the Love: Newark Community Day!

NUMC had a busy tent at Newark Community Day, where many people stopped for conversation or browsed books and literature, children enjoyed special crafts and all generations tried to guess the number of Styrofoam peanuts in a jar. Eddie Cobb’s guess of 396 was only 20 off!

The gorgeous weather added to everyone’s enjoyment.

More Community Day photos on p.10!

Fourth Annual Silent Auction and Coffeehouse

Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 25!

Plan now to donate special items or services for the auction, the proceeds from which will once again help fund various NUMC ministries! Please send a note to Kathy Werrell with the description ([email protected]). Tutoring, baking, babysitting...creatively use your God-given talents! Consider businesses you regularly support (restaurants, jewelry stores, hair and nail salons, gift shops, gyms) and ask them for a donation!

Let Kathy know which of your favorite establishments you will ask to contribute an item or gift card to be auctioned – she can provide you with a solicitation letter. All you need to do is address it to a business, sign it, and deliver it (hopefully to a person who would recognize you).

AND: The Congregation in Action Team is calling all musicians, comedians, and closet shower singers! Performers are needed for the coffeehouse, which is happening during the silent auction. Share your talents and gifts—sing, play an instrument, read a poem, tell jokes! Perform as a family! If you are interested or have questions, please contact Jo Anne Deshon ([email protected]; 302-738-9524).

Special Giving Sunday: World Communion Sunday, October 6

Newark UMC and United Methodists around the world will join together on this special Sunday to celebrate Holy Communion. Your giving on World Communion Sunday helps to provide scholarships for national and international graduate students whom God has gifted to learn and to serve, to become the world-changers He created them to be.

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” And because the people of The United Methodist Church believe that all of God’s children have been created and gifted to build the kingdom Jesus ushered in, we’re providing resources for them to do just that. Because of your giving on World Communion Sunday, the most powerful tool to change the world is in more hands.

If you wish to give to World Communion Sunday online, please go to the NUMC Online Giving webpage (http://newark-umc.org/wp/online-giving/) with World Communion Sunday under Optional. Or use one of the special giving envelopes included in the bulletin on 10/6 to give cash or a check (please put your Envelope Number on the special giving envelope and indicate World Communion Sunday on the check memo line).

Thank you, and God bless!

Go-Bags

The October Outreach meeting for assembling Go-Bags has been moved to Monday, Oct.21,

which allows an extra week for accepting needed items.

We will continue to collect until Sunday, October 20. Bring your donations to the Main Office,

labeled for OUTREACH. Most needed:

• microwaveable protein meals with flip-top lid

• breakfast bars

• fruit cups

• boxed (real) fruit juice

• (No more crackers are needed at this time.)

Thank you!

RECENT READS BOOK GROUP

Next meeting: Mon., Oct. 8, 1pm Bunting Library

Come join our group of happy readers.

Discuss books—chat—laugh—eat!

Bunting Library News

Our Sunday School program and Bunting Library are working together—books from our library will be used with the lessons in the Sunday School curriculum that is being developed. A major purpose for our church library is that the resources found here will support teaching and learning about our faith. Reference materials are carefully considered before being added to the library collection, and we are delighted that they will be used as they are meant to be!

As always, we are open when the church is open. Discover more about the many services that Bunting Library provides to the church, preschool, parents and all who are interested—see our bright yellow brochure found in the library on the sign-out desk.

Racial Justice Healing Circle

There were eighteen people at the Racial Justice Healing Circle that was held in Heritage Hall on September 22. Even though our diversity percentage was not very high, we had a moving, profound experience.

Charito Calvachi-Mateyco from the Delaware Humanities Speakers Bureau led us in several exercises that relaxed us, energized us, and freed us to be open with each other. She utilized aspects of mind, body, spirit, and heart to help us understand how to let go of hurtful or unproductive ways of thinking that we may have learned from our families (“ancestors”). We also learned what to cherish and hold fast.

This circle process showed us ways to engage with other small groups. At the meeting, Diane Smith commented that we could all lead circles similar to this until everyone learns to listen with respect and compassion to each other.

Is this the path to peace?

Newark United Methodist Church is a congregation with open hearts, open minds, and open arms.

We welcome and affirm you in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, regardless of your race, ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, social or economic status, physical and mental ability, or religious affiliation.

We are all God’s beloved children.
