The Stanwick family

Our personal lives are wo-ven like threads into the fabric that makes up Resort Content. Craig will be 79 in March, I will be 71 in September. The grandchil-dren are an important part of our lives.

Our son and his family live in Eden Valley, MN. Chad works for Faribault foods and coaches football in Eden Valley. His wife, Kris-ti, is employed by Malco a job that has provided nu-merous travel opportuni-ties. She reads a lot in her spare time. Their son, Jordan, is a sophomore in high school. Jordan loves football, plays the guitar,

and is excited about his leading role in Macbeth this season. Tyler, a sev-enth grader, enjoys both football and basketball and is busy with confirmation. He is an easy going young man unless challenged to a game of cards. He plays to win! The family recently enjoyed a trip to the San Diego zoo.

Our daughter, Stacy, and her husband Kris live in Aitkin, MN. Kris works for the DNR. He is a talented craftsman and is passionate about hunting and fishing. Stacy is employed by the County as a social worker (child protection). Stacy likes to knit and enjoys an occasional scrapbook re-

treat but spends most of her time keeping up with the boys’ sporting events. Hunter, a freshman in high school, is a good student and a serious athlete. Base-ball is a favorite, but he also excels in both football and basketball. He is the one you want to take shopping with you. He is a math wizard. Tanner is in sev-enth grade. Active in a sport each season, he still finds time to hunt and fish. Both boys tagged a deer this fall. Tanner has an unusual skill set. He likes to trap and has learned to tan the hides. My Christ-mas gift last year was a knife he made himself.

It may surprise you to learn the primary reason for our extra person charge is not to generate additional revenue but to control the occupancy of each cabin. Rates are quoted based on normal (standard) occupancy. Usually a 2-bdrm. cabin sleeps 4, a 3-bdrm. cabin 6, a 4-bdrm. cabin 8, and so forth. This is an industry standard. Our cabins each accommodate a few additional guests. We often provide a sofa sleeper in the living area, bunk beds, trundle beds or find other ways to sleep additional guests. Most resorts follow a similar plan and charge for additional guests.

This includes infants and small chil-dren.

Additional guests put added stress on the septic system and contribute to the amount of water and electricity used. They impact the overall cleanliness of the unit, add to maintenance costs, and otherwise influence the amount of wear and tear to our property. Even the amount of garbage is an issue. Another factor that is often overlooked is densi-ty. Not all guests are comfortable with crowded conditions. Privacy is a con-cern. We must adhere to fire code and

health department regulations. We are inspected annually.

All guests must be registered. This in-cludes day visitors and overnight guests. This is the law. We prepare for your stay based on the numbers listed on your registration card. Please inform us of any changes before your arrival. Your bill will be adjusted accordingly.. We cannot exceed the maximum allowed.

ing any distance or lifting anything very heavy. He is not currently a candidate for back surgery. This is because of concern regarding an irregular heart-beat, a condition he has had for some time. His medication has been changed. We continue to monitor the situation, but his personal physician says it is under control. In the past, epidural injections did not seem to help with pain. However, injections at

Craig and I must face reality. Physically, we have our limita-tions. We are not able to maintain the resort in the manner we think you de-serve. Craig has spinal stenosis. He is often in pain due to pinched nerves. Sometimes a foot and leg are numb momentarily. As a result, he may fall. A stomach ulcer complicates his health issues. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic have indicated he should not be walk-

the Mayo Clinic have provided some relief. He chooses to remain active and overall is in good health. Steroid injec-tions and physical therapy on a regular basis may help him enjoy life. I have trouble with bad knees and battle with acid reflux but otherwise have no seri-ous issues. We just must admit we are older and slower. We do not have the strength or stamina of a younger per-son. Good help is hard to find.

Our Future: Gazing into a Crystal Ball

In subsequent years, the entire deposit must accompany your registration. We will address any financial concerns on an individual basis. But we need a commitment from you.

When people call or drop in we must know what is available. Families look-ing for several cabins often do so in late August or early September. They are reluctant to wait. If you have ques-tions or concerns, please discuss them with us.

Policy Change: Registration & Deposit We need to make a change, in order, to respond to early inquiries and a grow-ing clientele. This summer guests who plan to return the following summer and expect us to hold the cabin of their choice for them must fill out a registra-tion card and pay all or part of the re-quired deposit before departure. The remainder of the deposit must be in our hands by the 1st of January.

Check In: after 4:00 p.m.

Check out : before 9:00 a.m.

No Exceptions!

It is evident we need to do a

better job of communicating about

policies & operating procedures.

We are sharing our thoughts with you because somewhere out there may be someone with an answer to our prayers. We love the resort and we have no im-mediate plans to sell. However, it is time for us to prepare for the next phase of our lives. As we transition, we are uncertain what path to follow. We want Resort Content to remain a sim-ple “Ma and Pa” resort. We want to be honest with you.

Option #1: We would like to barter, trade, or otherwise swap the opportuni-ty to spend the summer at the lake for a strong work ethic, a love for the lake,

and the ability to help the resort run smoothly. Our office could provide temporary lodging for a young man or a husband and wife team. We prefer to offer an RV site for the summer. We can hire or offer some financial com-pensation as well. Work includes vari-ous cleaning, dock work, and grounds keepings chores.

Option #2: We would like to see our son and his family become more in-volved. The lifestyle appeals to them. But both my son and his wife have good jobs and a paycheck it would be hard to give up. Until the youngest

graduates from high school they are available only occasionally on week-ends. They bring friends and help with improvements before we open each spring. We are grateful for their help.

Option #3: We try to find a buyer who shares our vision for the future. While we work to improve our facilities, and add to the entertainment package; we want the resort to remain a “Ma and Pa” operation. Our long-range plans include adding RV sites to our resort package and building a lodge to accom-modate short stays of less than 3 nights.

We are long overdue for some new docks. I am interested in floating docks as our lake level fluctuates a great deal. By August it is possible to float a fishing boat under the docks we put out in June.

We have stripped and refinished the boards on the deck close to the parking area several times. We would like to replace the cedar with a composite ma-

A railing is needed along the main steps down to the lake.

Outdoor lighting is another issue. Safe-ty is a primary concern. An overhead security light near the path from the firepit should help.

We need chairs for in front of each cabin. The comfortable chairs made from recycled milk jugs are expensive but last more than a single season.

terial and add a bench.

The rocks and the landscape fabric behind the sandbox have pulled away. I want to secure the bank and build a sand and water activity center for the kids.

Making Plans: What are Our Options?

A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish

chairs. (4) Forever, I have wanted an outdoor theater. Best Buy helped with selecting equipment. An arbor or per-gola was built at the end of the volley-ball court to house the screen. Our electrician hung speakers and added a power source. It works great! (5) To enlarge and improved the firepit was a big project. We thank Wes &

Becky for their back breaking work and knowledge. Our son, Chad, wife, Kris-ti, together with friends Dave & Dean-na helped. (6) We purchased a 4-stroke motor that starts on the first pull. We could use a couple more for the fishing boats. (7) We purchased 2 turbo pad-dlers for small children (under 70 lbs.) to use. They are stored by the office and must be checked out.

A Look Back: 2017 We usually over estimate what we can do in the short term and underestimate what we can do in the long term. 2017 brought several changes at Resort Con-tent. (1) An old fashion style trim was added to finish off the office. Custom kitchen cabinets are on order. (2) Kris, our son-in-law and his boys battled rain to replace shingles on #2 and #5 and side #4. (3) We built a booth in #3 and got rid of some of the wobbly kitchen

All the carpet and vinyl throughout the cabin had to be pulled and re-placed. The professionals we hired were great and the cabin was ready for guests by the following Saturday. However, we decided at the time to go above and beyond what was re-quired. New cabinets for the kitch-en have been ordered and we hope to replace the old siding on the out-side.

We are struggling to find a way to offer a Wi-Fi signal in the office on the resort. I have repeatedly request-ed an estimate of the costs involved to install a line for cable tv and a wi-fi connection. Nothing has hap-pened, so we are looking at other options. I am not very tech savvy but I believe it may be possible to

Resort Content is open from early May until late October, weather permitting. We offer early spring, spring, summer, fall, and late fall rates. Our new focus is on long term or extended stays in the fall. A separate brochure featuring monthly rates will be available soon. It pin-points exciting things to see and do as the seasons change. It is my favor-ite time of the year.

If you regularly stay in cabin #2 you will notice changes both inside and outside the cabin. In early August last summer, the septic system backed up in this cabin causing a considerable amount of damage.

enhance or boost my signal at the house. Several resort guests have offered to help us solve the prob-lems.

While we are looking for ways to make our life a bit easier, we contin-ue to push forward and explore ways to expand our business. We own a parcel of land across from the resort and are in the process of trying to acquire additional land. We would like to add seasonal RV sites and possibly a few campsites. We have always wanted to build some type of lodge on the site of the block foun-dation. A floor plan is slowly evolv-ing. A lodge with single rooms would allow us to book short stays.
