President’s Message By: Dan Todd [email protected]
Happy New Year everyone! Most of us are tired out from performing all those Holliday parties. Magic and
balloons kept me busy. Now that we start 2017, let's have fun. The Magic 101 will be led by George VanDyke
on January 4th. We are then having an "Open Mike" night. This means we will offer all members a chance to
perform something fun for Ring1. Show us what you've got up your sleeve, so to speak. This is your chance to
start the New Year on a magical note, Help make 2017 a great year.

Holiday Party
The Ring held its annual Holiday Party on December 7th. The members and their
guests always look forward to this annual event. The Ring provided the main dish
and the members brought a side dish or were asked to donate $5 to the Ring.
There was plenty of food; members were even able to take leftovers home.
After the meal, the members enjoyed participating in the annual “White Elephant
Gift Exchange.” Members were asked to bring a magic related effect worth at
least $5. The effect could be new or gently used; however, directions needed to
be included with the effect. As members arrived, they were given a playing card.
They tore this in half and put one half in a hat and kept the other half. The cards
were then picked. When a member’s card was picked, he could either select a gift
from the table or steal one from one of the other members. Gifts could only be
stolen three times. After the third time, the member holding the gift was able to
keep it. The members will always remember how lucky Brian Peck was. There
were three Ickle Pickle gift certificates worth $25 and one certificate entitling the
member and their guest to attend the 2017 Ring 1 President’s banquet free.
These certificates were all wrapped in boxes with bags of rocks in them so
members would not know what was in the boxes. Amazingly, Brian picked all 4 of
these boxes containing the certificates! Gradually, members stole the certificates
from him; however, he ended up with one of the Ickle Pickle certificates. Members
were telling him he needed to go to the boat (gambling) that night since he was so
lucky. Most of the members left with a gift that they will probably save and bring
as their White Elephant Gift next year. The members really enjoyed taking part in
this activity.

On December 11th, the Ring held its Veterans and First Responders Tribute Magical
Holiday Show. This show took place at the Kirkwood Community Theatre.
Veterans and First Responders attended this show free of charge. Attendees
reserved tickets beforehand. D. Jay Lenz, John Davit, and Larry Minth entertained
the attendees in the lobby before the show with close up magic effects. Terry
Richison was the M.C. for the show. The performers were as follows---Ted
Schnarre, Johnny Harper, Steve Queen, Rusty Pliers (Mike Niehaus), and Marty
Kopp. Several members volunteered to help with the show (scanned tickets,
worked back stage, helped with lights and sounds, etc.). The Ring really
appreciates the members who helped put on such a great show. All attendees
seemed to really enjoy the show.
The Ring will resume offering Magic 101 at the January meeting. Members come
before the actual meeting and learn new/old effects. Usually, 15 or 20 members
come early. The Ring is also preparing for another show in February, which will be
advertised, to the public. D. Jay is preparing a schedule for magicians to volunteer
monthly, on the third Tuesday, at Shriners Hospital performing magic for the
children.
Visitors are always welcome to the Ring’s meetings and events. The website is up-
to-date and lists upcoming events/meetings.

Let’s make kids smile and make adults act like kids!
It is JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) time!
This year the JDRF TypeOneNation Summit will be held indoors on Saturday, January
28th from 10 AM to 4 PM at the St. Charles Convention Center. We will have a close-up
area with two tables to teach and perform magic from 1 to 4:00PM. In addition, we will put
on an one hour magic show from noon to 1:00 (time may changes slightly). There will be
plenty of parking.
Therefore, we need magicians to teach and perform close-up. Also, stage magicians to
perform a 15-20 minute act. This is a great opportunity to perform your best magic for a
great cause.
Please send me an email or give me a call with your interest for either one or both
opportunities to perform magic.
Thank you for your continued support.

Title: HELP NEEDED
Darryl “D. Jay” is still in need of magicians for Project Magic. The Ring 1 commitment to Shriner's is now on THE
3RD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH. Please see D. Jay if you are available to help. His email is [email protected]
Shriner's has changed their time from 6:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and we must be out by 7:15 p.m. The best way, if
coming from downtown or IL, is to take 64 and exit north on Boyle St. and turn left onto Clayton St. If coming from
West County, head east on 64 and go North on Boyle and then left on Clayton St.
We have to go to the front desk and we show a photo ID. The room is on the 3rd floor. Take a left after getting off of
the elevator and towards the area where there is a sitting area with large flat screen TV. It will be a small room
(smaller than or meeting room). The new address is: 4400 Clayton Avenue St. Louis, MO 63110
If you have any questions, please call me.
Thank you,
Darryl "D. Jay"
