Who We AreThe Spectrum Adult Day Health programs provide a specialized and supportive environment for people with Alzheimer'sdisease, dementia, and related memory disorders. The Spectrum Adult Day Health Programs are members of NortheastSenior Health (a division of Northeast Health System); a not-for-profit organization dedicated to meeting the healthcareneeds of seniors throughout the North Shore and Merrimack Valley. Spectrum is the only day program in the region recognized by the Alzheimer's Association for our commitment to staff training and support.
Communities We ServeThe Spectrum programs serve the communities throughout Essex County, where an estimated 16,416 seniors have beendiagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. In fact, every 70 seconds someone is being newly diagnosed with this disease. Eightypercent of those with Alzheimer's disease are currently lining in the community with the majority being cared for by familymembers and other unpaid caregivers.
Our History
Spectrum has been serving people with Alzheimer's disease and other memory disorders for 20 years. With very humblebeginnings, in 1992 Spectrum was located in the old basement greenhouse area at Hunt Hospital in Danvers. The programreceived initial funding from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, and was a collaborative effort between North ShoreElder Services, Bay Area Visiting Nurse Association and the Danvers Council on Aging. Spectrum was initially open threedays per week with a certified capacity of 15 people per day Northeast Health System acquired Spectrum in 1995 throughthe purchase of the Bay Area VNA.
By 1999, the program was open five days per week and served an average of 14 people per day. From this point, the pro-gram rapidly expanded and in 2005, Spectrum moved from Danvers to its current location at the Cummings Center inBeverly. This state of the art facility had a certified capacity of 53 clients per day. By 2007, the Beverly program was atcapacity and was experiencing extended periods of time that new clients were placed on a wait list. In response to thisincreased demand, Spectrum expanded again to its current capacity of 70 clients per day.
In April of 2011, in response to the growing number of seniors who will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and to sup-port the families caring for these seniors, Northeast Senior Health opened a second Spectrum Day Program in NorthAndover. With this expansion, we had an opportunity to create an environment that promotes maximum independence foreiders with memory disorders. The new program has a certified capacity of 60 clients per day. Presently, the cost of a dayprogram like Spectrum is approximately 35% of the cost of the daily rate of a skilled nursing facility, providing a cost effec-tive alternative to nursing home placement.
Year in Review
In 2012, Spectrum Adult Day Health program at Beverly celebrated 20 years of providing services for people with a diag-nosis of a memory disorder and their families, while Spectrum North Andover celebrated its first year of providing servicesto those in need in the Merrimack Valley Region. In 2012, the Spectrum Programs served a combined 242 individuals andfamilies coping with a memory disorder. The Spectrum Programs are the proud recipient of the largest donation NortheastSenior Health has seen in its history. This donation made the purchase of 2 new passenger vans possible for providingtransportation to and from both Spectrum Programs, events and outings as well as field trips for our clients. On behalf ofboth Spectrum Programs, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Ralph Bates for his overwhelming generosity.
Northeast Senior Health and the two Spectrum Programs remain committed to enhancing the quality of life for people withAlzheimer's disease, as well as their families and caregivers. We are delighted that you are here tonight to share in our10th Annual Benefit for Spectrum! You too are making a difference in the lives of Alzheimer's patients and their families!
Thank you,

Director of Community Programs
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the staff of the Spectrum Adult Day Health Programs in Beverly and North Andover, and the Northeast SeniorHealth Board of Directors, I welcome you to our Tenth Annual Spectrum Benefit.
Our mission here at Spectrum is to enable our wonderful people, who live with Alzheimer’s disease and other types ofdementia, to stay in their own homes with their loved ones, and out of nursing homes, for as long as possible. We accom-plish this by providing a nurturing environment, meaningful activities, nursing care, social services, support groups andsocialization, as well as community field trips.
I witness, on a daily basis, the positive effects that therapeutic activities can have for people with Alzheimer’s disease andother memory disorders. We strive to provide our members with activities that challenge all domains of the individual.Gentle physical activities promote physical strength. These include yoga, Tai Chi, Wii bowling, dancing to live musical enter-tainment, and many others. A wide range of intellectual activities is also provided, to challenge and sharpen cognitive andfine motor skills in a failure-free environment. Our members actively participate in trivia games, Veteran’s Club, armchairtravel (with our “It’s Never Too Late” computer system), and other retrieval-themed activities. Finally, creative pursuits inart, music, and cooking, are an ongoing feature of the daily routine at Spectrum, as well as good times with friends.
All proceeds from tonight’s benefit go directly to fund activities, events, and supplies for our Members. Your ongoing sup-port has enabled us to provide Spectrum Members with enriching and high-quality activities, such as visits to museumsand art galleries, great entertainment, massage therapy, and our annual trip aboard the Essex River Cruise, just to mentiona few.
We wish to thank our many corporate, in-kind, and individual donors, whose generosity ensures the success of this year’sevent. It is with your ongoing and generous support that we will continue to improve the quality of life of people impactedby Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
Please enjoy the evening!
