My name is Andrew Lee and I am your 2013-2014 District Governor! First, please let me say how excited I am to serve and help all of you in your various service projects, fundraisers, and other endeavors. I look forward to meeting each of you and plan to visit each of your clubs throughout the year!

My biggest goal is to strengthen our existing clubs, in numbers and the amount of service we perform! One way I plan to do this is by organizing an Executive Board training retreat for the newly elected, 2013-2014 boards, as well as the 2012-2013 board, in order to facilitate the transition between leaders. In this program, I plan to focus on specific, job-related aspects that will truly be effective for the new year, rather than arbitrary leadership skills. This program is projected to happen this May, so please be aware of future announcements.

Last, here are a few facts about me! I attend Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, and am studying Aerospace Engineering. I received my Eagle Scout award in February 2012 and am still somewhat active as an adult leader in Boy Scouts. I do saber fencing, acrylic and oil painting, guitar (electric and acoustic, I can sing a little, too), ukulele, and I play videogames on my PS3 (mostly Nazi Zombies). I like to listen to “screamo” music as well as Matchbox Twenty. I am Chinese and can speak Cantonese as well as a little Spanish (AP Spanish 4 and I visited Madrid). Last, one of my favorite foods is spam musubi (it’s Hawaiian).

Again, I am very excited for the 2013-

2014 year and to work with the 2013-2014 SWD Executive Board, which consists of: Alex Martinez (Secretary), Kelsae Pederson (Bulletin Editor), Miles Glick (Baja Lt. Gov), Perla de los Angeles (Kachina Lt. Gov), Serina Pack (Rio Grande Lt. Gov), and Katie Merrill (Zia/Northern New Mexico Lt. Gov). If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or just want to chat, do not hesitate to contact me. Let’s make the most of this year!

Yours in service, leadership, and fellowship,

Andrew Lee 2013-2014 CKI Southwest District Governor Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University '16 (602) 828-9218 [email protected]

Kelsae Pederson University of New Mexico Email: [email protected] About me: I am a senior at UNM majoring in History. I work at the Pool on campus as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. My favorite CKI moment so far has been going to New Orleans and working with Habitat for Humanity. It was an amazing feeling leaving NOLA, knowing that I had helped a family have a place to call home again. I’m looking forward to more moments like this as I continue my service in CKI!

District Treasurer Kevin Wright Northern Arizona State Email: About me: Even though I didn’t think I was going to be serving on the District Board, I am so excited to serves as your District Treasurer. I attend NAU and am currently studying a degree in Business Communications with emphasis in Information Systems with a minor in Sociology. I am your Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor of the Arizona Division and Dcon Chair. I will also be serving as your District Laws and Regulations Chair! This is my Senior year and I plan to make the absolute best of it, especially with CKI! I truly love what this organization has done for me from when I was just a member my freshman year to now serving on the District Board for a second time. After I graduate I will be going off to Graduate School to pursue a Master’s Degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education along with seeking membership to become a Kiwanian. As time progresses, I want to make sure everyone is aware of the fact that I am here to be a resource for your individual clubs in our district. I am always her to help because I simply live to serve and love to serve!

Zia Lieutenant Governor Katie Merrill Eastern New Mexico State Email: [email protected] About me: Hello Mighty Southwest! This is Katie, the Zia division Lt. Governor. I am so excited to start this new year and to grow in service and leadership with all of you. I am passionate about service and will be here to answer any questions you all may have along the way. I attend Eastern New Mexico University as a Music Education Major. A few facts you may not know: I love animals and my best friend is my kitty, Mella, I have been in the Kiwanis family for 10 years, and I am 100% and completely in love with Jason Mraz. I cannot wait to get to know all of you better and I am so excited for the year. Good luck with then end of your semester and have a great summer!

Rio Grande Lieutenant Governor Serina Pack Western New Mexico University Email: [email protected] About me: I believe we each can make a positive difference every day. I believe CKI is one way to make a notable difference in the world and I am proud to me a member. I am extremely passionate about promoting reading literacy to elementary children, that is why I was compelled to apply and then honored to receive the CKI Tomorrow Fund grant. This month is a busy month implementing a reading and art literacy program in all the 4th grade classrooms in my school district with the help of youth mentors from Kiwanis SLPs. This work will culminated with art shows featuring children's art created out of reading workshops on Global Youth Service Day the last weekend of April. Other interests I have involve paint horses, art, reading/writing and, of course, service everyday. In addition to my interest in CKI, I am a Senator at WNMU, Honor's Club President, member of American Legion Auxiliary, Rainbow Girls, and BPA. I am feel very strongly about patriotism and honoring our military and veterans.

not born here to work and pay taxes. You were put here to

be part of a vast organism to explore and create. Stop

putting it off. The world has much more to offer than what’s

on 15 televisions at TGI Fridays. Take pictures. Scare

people. Shake up the scene. Be the change you want to see in the world.” ― Jason Mraz

My name is Miles Glick and I am serving as your Baja Division Lieutenant Governor for the 2013-2014 service-administrative year. The Kiwanis Family has always held a significant place in my heart and 2014 will mark my fourteenth year as a part of this wonderful organization. The University of Arizona Circle K International Club’s outstanding member for the month of March is Eddie MacKay. Eddie is a new member to the club this year and from the very beginning, he has shown his passion for serving others, has made a positive influence on other club members, and has stepped up the plate as a leader. Recently, Eddie has volunteered for the club’s bake sale fundraiser, the Beads of Courage “Dance Marathon,” and the U of A’s “Cats in the Community” project (his involvement in this event is even more spectacular because even though he could not find a ride to the event, he RAN to the event). Eddie goes above and beyond in his involvement with the club and the greater community. Without a doubt, Eddie is a well-rounded person who continually represents CKI’s club tenants, and we are happy to acknowledge Eddie as an outstanding member of our club! Club Update and Quick Glance at Plans for Next Year: Recently, the University of Arizona Circle K International Club has been very active in serving our community. At the beginning of this month, a group of our members volunteered at the Tucson Community Food Bank where we put together supplemental meal packages for families in need of the basic necessity many take for granted. This event always serves as a positive experience for our club. In addition, our club held a bake sale fundraiser at the university as well as participated in the “Dance Marathon” to raise money for Beads of Courage, an organization providing tangible signs of hope and accomplishment in the form of beads to children suffering from chronic illness. We will close up the month with volunteering at The Kiwanis Relays and a club social to acknowledge everyone’s effort throughout the year. With a new officer board fresh and ready for next year, plans are underway for the club next year. Among the greatest ideas we would like to pursue is creating CKI “families.” A CKI family will be a group of club members and an officer that will try to go to events as a family and bond as a team. As a club, it is important that every member grows in relationship with one another, and with CKI families, we hope that everyone in the club will become closer. Another idea for next year is to cooperate with local Key Clubs and Builder’s Clubs in working on team-building service projects, hopefully encouraging younger Kiwanis members to continue their journey with CKI in college as well as increase our involvement with the community. Our officer board is excited for making these changes and looks forward to another great year in service, leadership, and fellowship.

The new board at the University of New Mexico CKI is eager and excited to begin the new year! We started off the year with Service Week at UNM. During Service Week, we conducted many projects with several preferred charities. We sold syringes filled with blue Jell-O at our “Shots for Shots” event to benefit the Eliminate Project. We also conducted a food drive to raise awareness for STUFH, and then we donated the items to local food banks. Our last service project on the UNM campus was giving out bagels with information about March of Dimes while raising donations for the New Mexico chapter. We ended service week by volunteering at a local “Blues and Barbeque” event to benefit the art and after school programs at a local elementary school. Throughout the week we asked our club members and the UNM community to answer the question: “What does service mean to you?” Some of our memorable responses were “Service means developing my abilities and the abilities of all people,” “Spreading hope,” and “Personal time investment in communal growth.” This project was just the beginning of the decided theme for the new UNM CKI year, Inspire Service. We aim to inspire the love of serving others into both the CKI club members and others in our community! During the future months we will strive to inspire excitement about service through a variety of projects that our members are interested in. In the coming year we will strive to imprint a lasting love for service that will stay with our members through their entire lives. During the next CKI year we also aim to bring our club members closer together. We will host socials regularly to build fellowship among our members. Though service projects build community within the club, it is also important to hold events in a social setting where it is easy to relax and get to know each other! Fellowship is an important aspect of Circle K International, and so we plan to emphasize it through the coming year. These past few weeks have already been action-packed and enjoyable, and we are positive that the rest of the year will follow in suit! We as a board are eager to inspire service, inspire fellowship and inspire change throughout the upcoming CKI year!

As the new NAU CKI President, I would like to provide more service project opportunities for our club because I believe it will build up various leadership roles and develop new relationships along the way. In addition, to encourage more members to attend leadership workshops that are provided around campus. My hope is that CKI members would apply the necessary leaderships skills into real world scenarios without doubting themselves a second. This way, it would assist them to prepare their futures as well as balancing the importance of other tasks like education. I remember when I became a new member of the CKI family and obtained a board position; the more involved I was in the organization by volunteering and was more motivated to obtain a higher leadership position. It is the greatest satisfaction to lead as the President for NAU CKI because the NAU club is a great group of individuals that I know will lead our club as positive remodels in our community and beyond the university level.

It is best to believe in quality over quantity. As we doubled our last year's total service hours from the last CKI year, this was a major accomplishment for our club. However, this year, I hope to see more members eyeing more into leadership positions in order to make a more positive impact in our community.

As part of the CKI pledge, "... to dedicate myself to the realization of

mankind’s potential." and "Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people."-John D. Rockefeller

There is a born leader in each of us, it is whether we show it upon others the person's possible strengths and know how to utilize them. As NAU CKI President, I hope to encourage current and upcoming new members to look beyond themselves and aim high in anything they desire to do. I would not have been in this situation thanks to one CKI President, who saw a potential in myself that I could be a good leader. For that I hope to pay it forward to the members of the club.

I look forward to working with the new board and to start networking with different organizations that NAU CKI can lend a helping hand to such as American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and other local groups/projects.

WNMU is still a new club getting underway, We look forward to the new school year and new year of CKI. We welcome our new vice-president, Carla Viejo Sanchez, to WNMU CKI. We may be small, but we work on great things. This past year, the four of us officers of WNMU CKI (Serina Pack-President; Brandon Cook-Vice President; Lacey Oldham-Secretary; and Robert Pack-Treasurer) have really enjoyed it. Fall Rally and DCON will certainly be highlights of our year, but also the service work we did. We are especially blessed by the support of Kiwanis Club of Silver City, our faculty sponsor-Dr. Cline, and our Kiwanis Advisor-Lori Bonomo.

The last two weeks of April, we are continuing our special service work that is being made possible by two grants earned: CKI Tomorrow Fund Grant and the Disney Friends of Change grants. Our work in focused on promoting reading to elementary students. We are expanding "For the Love of Art and Read for Joy" program to 4th grade students in the Silver Consolidated schools. We are hoping to offer this program to over 200 students and have many of their art pieces showcased in art shows in the community, creating awareness about the importance of reading. The art is being created from books being read in workshops with youth mentors, it is an exciting time that also involves Global Youth Service day the last weekend of April. The project is a very large project, but much work has already been completed and has been most rewarding
