Do you wonder if you or someone in your
family may have ADHD (At-tention Deficit HyperactivityDisorder)? If so, it is impor-tant to get a proper diagno-sis. There is no objectivetest (like a blood or urinetest) to determine if some-one has ADHD. The diag-nostic criteria for ADHDoverlaps with other condi-tions such as Anxiety,Learning Disabilities, Bi-Polar Disorder, and manyothers. Therefore, it is important to get evaluatedby a licensed psychologistin order to get an accuratediagnosis. As with most medical
conditions, diet plays an im-portant role with ADHD.Many times a diet with lotsof refined sugar, food color-ings, preservatives, andother additives can be an
exasperator of the inappro-priate behavior. Avoid allfood additives, and be sureto add foods rich in essen-tial fatty acids such assalmon, walnuts, and avo-cados. Protein should beincluded in every meal forsomeone with ADHD. Thiscan come in the form ofmeat, eggs, nuts, legumes,or yogurt.A person with ADHD
symptoms should be sureto consume foods high in Bvitamins such as brown riceand green leafy vegetablesto help reduce stress. Tryptophan is a naturalchemical that helps in-crease serotonin which en-courages a sense of calm.Foods rich in tryptophan in-clude yogurt, poultry, soyproducts, and whole grains. It is important to identify
and eliminate any environ-
mental toxins or food aller-gies that may be causing orincreasing ADHD symp-toms. Even over exposureto hyper stimulating mediasuch as intense videogames can be part of theproblem. A behavioral ther-apist can assist with a par-enting plan that can makethe difference between suc-cess and failure.

Avet with clear blueeyes, a clipped haircut
and a soldier’s bearing, for-mer Spc. Bruce Chambersentered the U.S. army tohonor family tradition. Hewanted to serve his country,as his father and grandfa-ther did, and then build acivilian life with G.I. benefits.Instead, 15 months as a
calvary scout in Iraq earnedhim years of trouble. He developed a drug habit, col-lected an other-than-honor-able discharge and lost hisbenefits. War terrors surgedon dark roads, with loudnoises and in his dreams. One night, a police officerstopped him for an expiredlicense plate and, seeingChamber’s belligerence, pulled out a gun. Chamberstook off and was arrestedafter a car chase. “I was outof control,” he says. “Ididn’t care about anything.”A judge sent him to a first-
time offenders program, and soon after a healthcounselor suggested UCFRESTORES for treatment ofpost-traumatic stress disor-der (PTSD). The programemploys exposure therapy, using 3-D animation, mo-tion, sounds and scents torecreate traumatic eventsand desensitize warriors totheir memories. Again andagain, Chambers experi-enced virtual recreations ofthe 2007 ambush of hisBradley Fighting Vehicle. He felt the bomb rock. Hesmelled kerosene and burn-ing tires, heard shootingand then the explosion ofanother Bradley that hadcome to assist.Slowly, his anger, depres-
sion and paranoia eased. He could discuss his experi-ences in group sessionswith other combat veterans.“I learned that if you talkabout it, it loses power over
you,” he says.Today, Chambers and his
girlfriend live in a tidy four-bedroom house filled withchildren. He holds down atleast one job and thanksUCF RESTORES for hisconfidence in the future. That’s a common out-
come for patients of theclinic, which has helpedmore than 150 vets putghosts to rest and copewith PTSD.But clinic founder and di-
rector Deborah Beidel andher staff and students cantreat only a tiny fraction ofveterans who need help. Soshe dreams of training notjust graduate students inher unique approach to ex-posure therapy, but alsopracticing clinicians. “Wewill never be able to treateveryone who needs ourservices,” she says, “but wecould provide training to al-ready established mental
health professionals.”When the $5 million de-
fense department grant thatcurrently funds the clinicruns out in November 2015,though, Beidel may have toclose the doors to both pa-tients and clinicians. In re-sponse, private andcorporate donors havestepped in to help with anendowment fund that willhelp fund future operations.“I know how to do the treat-ment,” Beidel says. “I knowhow to do the training. Whatwe need is the funding.”For many of the thou-
sands of soldiers and veterans like Chamberswho still need help, thatcould make all the differ-ence. “In Iraq,” Chamberssays, “we said that everyday was a good day to die.Well, how about every dayis not a good day to die.How about, every day is agood day to live.”
Depressed and volatile after15 months in Iraq, formerSpc. Bruce Chambers wasdiagnosed with PTSD afteran arrest and referred toUCF RESTORES, an on-campus clinic where psy-chology professor DeborahBeidel trains graduate stu-dents in a unique — and ef-fective — type of exposuretherapy.
A Good Day to Live With a federal grant set to run out next year, private donors step into fund a promising PTSD treatment program at UCF.
