SPRING SHOW at NORTHPARKSHOPPING CENTRE..

Judging results are included with thisReview.-

GRAND CHAMPION and Champ. FirstDiv.

Dendrobium Bardo Rose `PinkDelight. This floriferous hybrid has lovelypink flowers which display themselves onspikes which stand upright from thecanes. It has featured in past shows as asuperior plant, and is a reasonablyvigorous grower. Alan Sim told me hehas another plant, just as good, which hedidn’t exhibit. I seem to remember NoelOliver winning a championship with thisplant in a past show, too.’RESERVE CHAMPION Orchid andChamp. Open Div.

Paphiopedilum venustum. This is afavourite plant of Tony Bourne’s. He hasother varieties of this popular speciespaphiopedilum from the foothills of India, too, where the cooler climate it naturallyenjoys makes it one of the easiestslippers to grow well.., CHAMPION SECOND DIV.

Dendrobium Unnamed. This Aust.Native hybrid made a well flowered andpresented plant for Barbara Semmens, who .had a very successful show.

MOST OUTSTANDING SEEDLING –ACROSS ALL DIVISIONS ANDGENERA.

Cymbidium Sleeping Dancer xValley Nymph grown by Jim & EvelynCumings was adjudged Best seedling ofthe Show. They have been verysuccessful with the seedlings they haveshown, and which gives us the lead thatcareful selection of crosses and goodculture leads to success. The products ofmodern crossings are producing fineblooms, and should be a part of everygrower’s collection of plants.

SOCIAL OUTING.

..A group of 22 members enjoyeda night out with the Ethelton Players, agroup which raises funds to supportcharities. We are looking forward to asimilar outing next year. Thanks to AlanDavies for arranging the evening.

BEST GOLD ORCHID OF SPRINGSHOW.

Cymbidium Lunakira `Kate’, alarge yellow cymbidium with multiplespikes, shown by Ben Knobben. Thisplant will be in competition with the BestGold Orchid from each of the Mid-yearand Winter Shows to win the “Best GoldOrchid of our 50th Year GoldenAnniversary” prize.

successful staging of our Spring Show. The management of the NorthParkShopping Centre were pleased with thedisplays we presented this year.Personally, I believe we may have seensome better quality plants displayed inour Shows in years gone by, but thisyear's displays were still creditable.’

ORCHID DISPLAY AT WESTADELAIDE UNITING FAIR.

Our participation in the AdelaideWest Fair (where we hold our monthlymeetings) has been appreciated over anumber of years. We have a prominentposition in the entrance foyer where wecan’t help but be noticed ..

We will again feature a noncompetitive table top display, and wehope it will be supported by membersbringing along plants for staging onFriday 16th October, (2pm to 3pm,)when they will be arranged by KevinTrevan and Jill Taylor, who have mannedthe display and answered questions forlots of years. I guess they could do withsome support, too, if you are free. TheFair will conclude about 3.30pm onSaturday 17th and our display dismantled.

Please consider coming along tosupport our display, and the Fair. Thereare some very good musical items duringthe day, plant, and book sales, clothing, and food sales..

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL.

This year’s Christmas Social willbe held on our normal 3rd Wednesdayevening, on 16th December, and will haveour usual Christmas meal followed byannual presentations of Aggregatetrophies and the usual fun.

The caterer will be the same aslast year, who, it was agreed, provided avery good meal.

The cost to members will be $5 permember to help defray costs. Nonmembers will need to pay the full fee, of$25, as previously. We’ll have a list

circulating this meeting to start workingout final numbers for our caterer.

A recommendation to our newCommittee that we hold our subs. againat $20 next year, (arguably the best valuein town for a full 12 months of meetingssocial outings, and shows)., means weshould be prudent with our assets. Wehope you will agree, and plan to be partof our Christmas festivities this year.

SUPPER ROSTER THIS MONTH.No volunteers are listed to help

serve the dessert and cuppa at theconclusion of this month’s meeting, butwe’ll need some kind members to helpout here, please.

Last meeting, Diana Bird and NeilCooper helped out. Thank you, members.

LAST MONTH’S DISPLAYS.

The seasons roll on – fewercymbidiums and cattleyas, but anincreasing variety of natives and othergenera make up the flowering scene aswe move into October. A number ofplants tabled last meeting appeared in theSpring Show

The Brands showed this cym. spike whichbranched halfway up. An unusual occurrenceseldom seen.

This mounted Sarco. falcatus is agood introduction to what we’ll see thismonth. After a slow early season the sarcs.are coming into their own, and we expect tosee a good selection at our speclal night thismeeting.

Modern cyms have bold strongcolours compared to many we saw yearsago.

Cym Lunakira `Kate , a contender in ourGolden Cym contest.

This novelty ZbaTitanic Jest showedintriguing colours at the Spring show.

You wouldn’t believe the scramble bysome people anxious to buy this KevinHipkins novelty type hybrid in the Open Div.display at the Spring Show.
