When asked about the Continental Army’s Winter

Quarters most are mindful of Valley Forge, PA and the

winter of 1777!





But in some ways Newburgh, NY, & the winter of 1782-83 was much more

critical





The Continental Army wasnear mutiny!





Had not been paid!Desertion, illness and lack of new recruits had put the army at desperate levels!





Only a few days earlier (January 6, 1783) three senior officers of

the Continental Army had presented to the Continental

Congress meeting in Philadelphia an urgent message from the

Army encamped at Newburgh, NY!





The message was that the Army stood on the verge of

open mutiny!





In the shadow of this great threat to American victory against the British came an idea put forth

from a thirty-six year old graduate of Princeton, one of the longest serving chaplains of the Continental Army, Israel Evans!





A “Temple of Virtue” was to be built from the harsh conditions of this winter

encampment!





He suggested constructing a large public building that could serve as a central

headquarters, a location for social gatherings and a place

for worship!





On February 6, 1983, with a packed audience and with

General George Washington and his wife in attendance, Chaplain

Evans had the honor of delivering the inaugural sermon!

In the cold winters of our days, the wise among us

will recognize the source of our strength always comes

from Him who “is able always to save those who come to God through him because he always lives...”

(Hebrews 7:25NCV)
