With holidays just around the corner we thought we’d take a look at a few of the exotic escapes dotted in and around the UAE that are just calling out to be visited during the Eid break. Whether you fancy heading to the stunning Zighy Bay in Oman, or want to de-stress

at Banyan Tree in Ras Al Khaimah, there’s loads of resorts within easy travelling distance of Al Ain, just perfect for a mini-vacation.

A trip to Al Ain Zoo on Thursday was a whole lot of fun and we got to meet nutritionist Nadia Al Maskary and chat about the crucial role she plays in the wellbeing of the animals in her care. We also found out about the zoo’s extended Eid opening hours and entertainment program, perfect for a day out with the kids if you’re staying in Al Ain. The importance of listening and understanding has never been clearer to me than it was last week when a certain hairdresser (who shall remain unnamed) decided to completely ignore my requests and turned my lovely blonde hair a shocking dark brown!! Whether this was thanks to poor listening skills or absentmindedness I’m not quite sure but I certainly wasn’t a happy customer leaving the salon. So, in education this week we take a look at the importance of listening skills and discuss a few ways that you can improve your own.

Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for your support with The Box Appeal 2012. The initiative ends on October 30th so make sure you return your boxes before then and look out for a roundup of Al Ain’s charitable efforts in our upcoming issue. Talking of upcoming issues, we won’t be around next week thanks to the Eid holidays but don’t worry, we’ll be back on November 1st and we’ll be bringing with us a brand new look!

Forests still cover about 30 per cent of the world’s land area but, at the current rate of deforestation, the world’s rainforests could vanish within the next hundred years. The consequences of cutting down trees and wiping out forests are devastating…

1. Approximately 70 per cent of animals and plants live in forests and many of them will not survive this rate of deforestation.2. Deforestation makes soil prone to erosion by wind or water. The roots of the trees hold the particles of the soil together, preventing the erosion of the topsoil.3. Trees release water vapor into the atmosphere. Fewer trees means less water turning former forest land into barren deserts.4. Forests play a crucial role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that fuel global warming.

So let’s all be aware and support companies who support ‘avoided deforestation’.

Visitors can expect an exciting array of performances and activities during the Eid Al Adha holidays at Al Ain Zoo.

There will be a variety of dance performances including the Emirati Al Harbia and Dabka dances, an Indian dance, some traditional African dances and a captivating fire show to keep guests entertained.

Visitors can continue to enjoy the zoo’s yearound highlights, such as the eagle and falcon performances, bird and parrot shows, Ahlan services and more. Children can also enjoy The Elezba Farm which allows them to get close to their favorite animals whilst the Giraffe Feeding offers a uniquely interactive wildlife experience.

Fatima Al Zaabi, Operations Manager at Al Ain Zoo commented “We look forward to welcoming guests to celebrate Eid. We have been actively preparing our programs and services in order to provide the best possible experience for our guests and are confident they will prove to be both enjoyable and enriching for guests of all ages.”

Al Ain Zoo will open from 10am-10pm daily from 26 October to 28 October with regular hours resuming on 29 October from 9am-8pm.

Tawam Hospital in Al Ain has opened a clinic specializing in care for children with Down syndrome. The clinic, which is part of the pediatric department’s outpatient area, will be available every Monday afternoon and will provide medical care as well as offering support and advice for patients and their families on how to cope with the condition as well as giving information on what Down syndrome actually is.

Dr. Jennifer Corder, Consultant Pediatrician at the new clinic explained, “Our goal is to offer individuals who have Down syndrome the best medical care.” She continued, “We emphasize and celebrate the unique abilities of each person with Down syndrome and offer supportive guidance for issues relates to associated challenges.”

World’s Largest Hot Air Balloon

Under the patronage of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the 2012 Abu Dhabi Media Summit took place in the capital last week.

Hosted under the theme ‘Redefining the digital frontier,’ the event focused on digital media in emerging markets, emphasized cross-industry perspectives and East-West dialogue and identified new sources of innovation outside traditional western media centers.

Microsoft founder, billionaire and humanitarian Bill Gates delivered the opening keynote address of the three-day summit, which was attended by over 400

leaders from across the global media industry.

In his opening speech, Gates said he would prefer to focus on charity over running for US presidency, stating “I wouldn’t ever choose to run for political office.”

As part of his visit to the capital, Gates also announced a partnership with Mohammed Ali Al Ansari, chairman of Al Ansari exchange, and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

which pledged almost AED 37 million in support of polio eradication in Pakistan and Afghanistan and the treatment of neglected tropical diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Speaking about the deal, Gates said, “The partnership we signed today is an example of focused, strategic philanthropy that will have a lasting impact on the lives of families living in the poorest parts of the world. Mr. Al Ansari added, “We are pleased to partner with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for this project, which will benefit millions of people and hundreds of communities from different countries.

Abu Dhabi’s Philanthropic Media Summit

The world’s largest hot air balloon was unveiled last week in Dubai. Balloon Adventures Emirates added the latest addition to their fleet of balloons in the form of the ‘A6-BOB’.

A spokesperson for the company said, “BOB is not just another hot air balloon – He is the largest balloon in the Middle East. When fully inflated this balloon stands almost 40m tall, the same height as a 12-storey building.”

Although the balloon is licensed to hold 30 passengers at a time, the company has decided to fly with a maximum of 24 passengers per flight in order to make the journey more comfortable for all of those experiencing it.

Austrian skydiver, Felix Baumgartner, made history on Monday last week after becoming the first skydiver to go faster than the speed of sound.

Daredevil Felix reached a velocity of 1340 kph as he dove to earth from the edge of space. Jumping out of a balloon 39km above New Mexico, the 43-year-old also smashed the record for the highest ever freefall.

His descent took just under 10 minutes, the first of which he spent tumbling uncontrollably. He soon regained control

The fares for public bus services across Abu Dhabi will be increased by up to 100 per cent as of November 1 and a new tracking system will be introduced in order to monitor those passengers not paying fares.

Fares were previously just AED 1 and now passengers will have to fork out AED 2 within Abu Dhabi city whereas, in the suburbs, the tariff will start from AED 2 increasing by 5 fils per kilometer with a maximum of AED 5. Inter-city public transport will start from AED10 increasing by 10 fils per kilometer with a maximum of AED 25.

A fully automated fare collection system similar to the Nol card system on Dubai’s Metro will be implemented by the end of next year to efficiently monitor the use of the network and payment of fares.

Saeed Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, General Manager of the Bus Office at the Department of Transport, said the new scheme had been introduced after in-depth studies into all economic aspects relating to the use of the public system and to “enhance the public transportation network in order to provide commuters with a comfortable and safe transport system.”

The UAE tied with Uzbekistan last week in an exciting game that saw the teams score two goals a piece.

After defeating Uzbekistan in a qualifying match for the 2012 London Olympics back in March, the UAE squad was in high spirits going into this international friendly at Al Shabab’s Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.

Esmail Mattar and Saeed Al Khatheri managed to score goals for the homeside but their efforts were cancelled out by Sanjar Tursunov and Server Djeparov who equalized for Uzbekistan in the second half

Al Ain Football Club triumphed 4-2 over hosts Dubai last week in the second round of Group A of the Etisalat Cup.

Dubai fought back hard and managed to grab one goal in the first half, thanks to Richard Porta and a second in the following half with the help of Simon Feindouno. It was Al Ain who triumphed and took three points, putting them first placed in the group with Dubai sliding down to third.

UAE rugby was last week awarded federation status by the UAE General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare.

“We are very honored to be recognized by the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare and awarded with Federation status” said UAE Rugby Federation’s Chairman Mohammed Falak Naz.

In other rugby news, the UAE U-19 national squad performed well in Kazakhstan last week and were rewarded with progression to the next round of the contest. Defeating Uzbekistan 80-0 and Kazakhstan 22-20, it was a promising start for the young team.

The UAE women’s 7s also performed well, taking first place in Pune, India at the Asian Women’s Sevens Championship after defeating Malaysia 17-12 and South Korea 24-0.

The final match of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Elite Trophy was played between the UAE and Nepal in Sharjah cricket stadium last week where both the teams were declared joint winners, after a tied score of 241 runs over 50 overs.

The keenly contested match started-off with the UAE team opting to bat first. Nepal’s strong fielding put pressure on the home team but batsmen Khurram Khan and Saqib Ali put up enough of a fight to emerge against Nepal at the loss of 6 wickets.

The UAE’s coach, Aaqib Javed, was entirely satisfied at the joint win. “The boys deserve all the praise for this wonderful performance,” he exclaimed. “I have been a part of many close matches in my international career and this final was

With the DNA switch in D (for dynamic) the MiTo gives you 85 bhp and 107 lb ft. When you change it over to N (natural) you get 78 bhp and 81lb ft. So, clearly you use less fuel in N mode as you’re getting less performance. That’s great for the stingy guy inside you but not so great for your inner racing driver. Oh and you also need to remember to change gear at what seems like stupidly low revs. That being said, once your little engine is ticking away contentedly you’ll probably be happy to reconsider how stupid those revs seemed.

The car isn’t fast, that’s a given. In fact, it only has a top speed of 175 kmph but it’s tidy, sounds great and looks pretty swanky. It reminds me a bit of the Mini One, although those cheeky folk at Alfa are asking a bit more for it than the Mini men. Granted, it comes chock full of extras as standard like the 6-inch sports alloys, cruise control, climate control and Alfa’s own Bluetooth system. Punters opting for the ‘Distinctive’ trim will also get 17-inch sports alloy wheels, bright red Brembo brakes and rear parking sensors. But still, more than a Mini One? I guess only time will tell if the Alfas called this one right.

Getting back to the MiTo, it’s pretty sweet to drive thanks to being so light, and looks fairly tidy for a small car, especially if you go for the new metallic body in Ametista Black with a hint of purple. It can also claim to be the cleanest and most economical car in its grade with an impressive C02 output of only 98g/km!.

All in all, not a bad choice for a city runaround as long as you don’t need to get anywhere in a hurry.

If you happen to own a pet, you’ll be well aware that while having a loving, loyal animal to play with and enjoy is great fun, the trade off involves a whole lot of time, dedication and energy.

To figure out what it actually takes to look after and work with a huge number of animals, I headed to Al Ain Zoo to meet Nadia Al Maskary, the zoo’s Nutrition and Enrichment Section Head – and one of very few Emirati women working in the field.

The 32-year-old adventurous lady absolutely adores animals! She keeps a close eye on the diet of every single animal in the zoo and aims to enrich their lives in a multitude of ways by providing interactive and engaging activities. The chirpy and vivacious Nadia has always been an animal lover, “All my family members have a fondness for animals,” she tells us.

In fact, at the tender age of 3, Nadia had already decided on her future plans and followed this through when she went to study Animal Science in Australia upon finishing high school. Following this, she worked towards a Veterinary Medicine degree where she specialized in Animal Behavior and Nutrition. Since then, her work has taken her to many places and allowed her to get up close and personal with many exotic creatures.

Working with animals isn’t a career choice that springs to mind when you think of Emirati women however, Nadia was very lucky in the sense that, “My immediate family members were totally, supportive,” she tells us. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing and she’s certainly had her fair share of raised eyebrows to deal with from those outside her family, many of whom are of the opinion that she should start studying the nutritional needs of humans over animals. Yet, Nadia’s determination has remained strong and she has always felt that her need to help animals, who cannot speak for themselves, is a genuine one and works hard to do her job to the best of her abilities.

Personally, Nadia is a big fan of tigers and other members of the big cat family however, her house isn’t the place for these creatures and so she tries to make up for this by having three pet cats. Not quite the same but she loves them dearly. Anyway, her days are so busy at Al Ain

Zoo that having more animals at home isn’t really something she has time for.

The zoo has over 100 different species and Nadia works with all of them, ready to take up any challenge that comes her way. A typical day sees her arrive early in the morning to do some quick follow ups with the food receiving department, the zoo keepers and the vets on duty. She then walks around the zoo in order to make sure everything is normal and none of the animals need immediate assistance. She explains how the whole team come together to work hard to ensure that things run smoothly, “Being a fresh and young team, the organization at Al Ain Zoo is ever-ready to learn and implement new things and here’s where communications plays its role”. With people of all nationalities working together to help make conditions as comfortable as possible for the animals in their care, listening and communicating really is key.

Performing her role successfully also relies on, “a lot of juggling

and taking things bit by bit”. When it comes to different situations or unexpected events she has to think on her feet and “go case by case in every matter.” Whether this is in bringing new animals to the zoo or changing the enclosures or locations of the animals, every case is researched thoroughly and involves discussions with as many professionals as possible in order to reach the best conclusion.

The number of animals at the zoo is comparatively more than the time allocated or staff assigned for such a huge job thus the small team have a lot of pre-planning, research and collaborating to do to ensure things run smoothly. The nutrition department tries to stay on top of any changes in health, diet or mood of any of the animals and this takes a lot of patience and team work but is a part of the job that Nadia thrives on. She smiles and explains that, “Working with animals is the perk of my job. I could do any job for the sake of it. But I do this job because of the passion.”

This love for animals is essential for someone in Nadia’s position as well as the need for up-to-date scientific knowledge, a lot of patience and good problem solving abilities. Undoubtedly, Nadia has it all.

On reading that title, someone (and, let’s be honest, it was probably Dad) nodded wisely and started explaining about it being an old radio engineer’s term. Briefly, signal is what you understand and noise is what you can’t. Sufficient noise will mean you won’t

get the message at all. English teachers and writers of text books have worked on this for years, trying to help students pick up tricks to help them extract a message from listening exercises that, for many students, are too hard to understand. The tricks help them make better sense of what they are trying to do and might just be

the thing that helps them to keep on trying until they understand more.

Since people are rarely in control of what they are listening to – you might be able to ask your teacher to repeat something, but the announcer on television is definitely not listening to such requests – listening tricks are invaluable skills to pick up. For some language learners, this is the only way to improve their listening skills – if it wasn’t, the books would do it another way, wouldn’t they?

Yes, they would and they are. Some books, and teachers for that matter, are now doing something different in an effort to use the way the brain learns to build up listening skills faster.

For a long time doctors talked about the grey matter inside your skull without realizing how important it was. Grey matter is a substance called myelin and doctors were puzzled as to why there was so much of it, since it didn’t seem to serve any purpose. Neurons were the active part of the brain, firing and sending electrical currents out to activate muscles and all sorts of other important tasks while myelin just seemed to sit there. However, when research revealed that the brain wraps myelin round chains of neurons every time those neurons are activated, the penny suddenly dropped. Myelin is to a chain of neurons what the plastic coating on electrical wires are to the copper inside; it stops the current from leaking out. Better insulation helps signals pass through the brain much more strongly and much more quickly.

If you’ve ever tried to learn a musical instrument, think back to what it was like to look at the notes on a scale for the first time and to try to translate that into fingers reaching for a note on the instrument. Slow, wasn’t it? And yet, after a while of seeing the note and then hitting it the pathways become wrapped into the brain and to see it, is to recognize it, is to play it.

Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) in partnership with the National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC) recently organized a four-day drug awareness workshop at ADEC headquarters in line with the “Fawasel” Program.

A number of Abu Dhabi teachers, social workers and NRC nurses attended the workshop, which focused on enhancing drug abuse awareness and also offered tips on how to protect young people against drug abuse.

The workshop aimed at providing trainees with the necessary skills on how to build a relationship based on trust with students and work with their families to help amend their behavior.

The Fawasel Program is internationally recognized and designed to be applied in schools. It has been modified to suit the UAE environment. HE Dr. Hamad Al Ghafiri, NRC Director General, said the program “will be applied in Abu Dhabi schools and then in UAE schools at a later stage”.

Ms. Asma Fakhri, Drug Control Expert in UNDOC, said that this workshop held at GCC level enables Abu Dhabi to take a leading role in the drug awareness campaign. She added “Being invited by Abu Dhabi government to conduct this important workshop in collaboration with NRC and ADEC reflects its keenness to provide students with all possible means to protect them and ensure their wellbeing.”

Healthy Bites for Government PupilsAccording to the latest health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, students at government schools will no longer be able to enjoy fried meals, processed foods, chocolates and crisps.

Vegetables and fruit will soon replace the junk food items. Following research into bad nutrition habits among children a 15-page guidebook has provided schools with strategies to improve the quality of food provided to students.

Aisha Al Siri, Director of the ministry’s school health department, is making all efforts to inform caterers to abide by the guidelines in order to face dismissal of services.

“We have asked all the education zones to give us the names of the suppliers so that we can carefully scrutinize them according to the guidelines,” she commented.

Carbonated and energy drinks are taken out of canteens and flavored water is also banned. On the contrary the guidelines encourage selling of fresh juices, fruits and dates.Inspection on canteen conditions will begin from next month onwards.

Workshop To Prevent Drug Abuse

Let’s get back to the connection between this and building listening skills? A signal that is comprehended will automatically fire a set of neurons off in your brain that will get wrapped in myelin. Noise, on the other hand, won’t do that. So, while a good tactic is to build up tricks, a better learning strategy is to make sure you understand everything, so that the right paths get wrapped into your brain. How? Cheat! Well, not really, although it may look like it to someone who expects that a listening exercise is a test of how much they understood.

Start not with the sound, but with the tapescripts. Get the words written down. Read them before you listen. The Internet is a great help with this – you can search for listening exercises with tapescripts. Then, check first for new vocabulary – words you don’t know are simply noise after all, they don’t convey any meaning. When you’re sure that you understand the subject completely, then begin to listen and read. If you’re studying a language with horrible spelling rules, you might find yourself surprised to discover how that word actually sounds. While you’re listening, make note of where native speakers connect the sounds of two words to make something that doesn’t come over the way you expected it. Now, check for patterns, does that happen every time those sounds are close to each other?

When you feel confident, stop, and put the whole thing away for a few days or at least long enough for it not to be fresh in your mind. Then listen to it again as a test. Is it wrapped? If yes, congratulations, your grey matter is doing all it should be! Still not there yet, try the exercise once more, and wait for the fantastic organ that is your brain to do its pretty awesome work!

New research suggests that there is a sleep related phenomena we should all be aware of – social jetlag. This condition arises when people, usually women, don’t follow a proper sleeping routine thanks to their busy social lives. Not only does this make us less productive in the office, it could also be the cause of weight gain, stress and depression! Not cool!

So, while getting an early night might not sound like the most exciting thing ever, having a few each week will make you happier, healthier, thinner and stress free! And who wouldn’t want that?

Follow these tips to get a better night’s sleep:

1. WORRY! Yes, you read correctly. Apparently setting aside 20 minutes of worry time before lunch stops your mind wandering at night and keeping you awake!

2. LIMIT CAFFEINE! As much as you may need that coffee to kick

start your day, make sure you don’t have any more after 2pm. That goes for Coke and Pepsi too! If you must have coffee in the afternoon, opt for decaf.

3. EXERCISE! Those who exercise even just 30 minutes a day sleep better than those who don’t.

4. EAT LIGHT. If you’re headed out to celebrate

a friend’s birthday, promotion or anniversary, don’t go for anything excessively heavy, fatty or salty as they will keep you awake longer.

5. CHILL OUT! Pop on some calm, soothing music as you are getting ready for bed to help your body switch off ‘social’ mode and into ‘zen’ mode.

Ingredients1/2 cup butter1 pinch saffron threads1 tsp freshly ground black pepper1 tsp cinnamon powder2 tsp allspice mix1 pinch salt2.5kg lamb cut into medium-sized pieces1 cup raisins3 onions, finely chopped1 cup blanched almonds 2/3 cup water1 1/4 cup honeylemon juice (as desired)

Method• Combine saffron, black pepper, cinnamon powder,

allspice and salt. Coat the lamb pieces with the mixture.

• In a pan add water, onions and lamb. Bring to the boil. Then cook gently, stirring occasionally for 10-15 minutes or until the meat is almost tender. Add more water if meat seems to be sticking.

• Stir in raisins, honey and lemon juice and continue cooking uncovered for 20-30 minutes until all the liquid has evaporated.

• Garnish with almonds.• Serve with plain white rice or pita bread.

Ingredients500g lamb mince1 tsp ground cumin2 tsp ground coriander2 crushed garlic cloves1 tbsp chopped mint leaves1 tsp crushed red chili flakessalt and pepper to tasteoil for brushing

Method• In a bowl, mix all ingredients until well blended. • Divide mixture into small balls, and then roll each ball on a

board with a cupped hand to turn them into ovals.• Thread the balls onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil.• Heat a pan and cook skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side.• Serve the koftas with yogurt and pita bread.

With only just over a week left to go, The Box Appeal in Al Ain has truly been a success! Not only have we run out of boxes in The Source offices, the nationwide campaign is also rapidly running out of boxes thanks to the generosity of everyone in the UAE.

This week we took a trip to Emirates National School in Al Ain to collect some of the boxes that the children had taken home and filled. Not only does this get the kids and their school involved in charitable work, it also helps to teach kids the importance of small, everyday things that we often take for granted. We will announce the winner of the class trip to Al Ain Zoo on November 1st after we have gathered all donations from around the city, so if you’re fast, you still have time to enter!

November is approaching fast, and with it comes National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)!

Each year on November 1st, inspired writers kickstart a fury of writing in order to punch out the tall tales that burn within. The

target? A 50000-word novel in just 30 days! Everyone who succeeds, receives an official certificate and a badge

from the NaNoWriMo orginsation and, for those who don’t quite make the

mark, no harm done and at least they’ve got a good

start on that burning novel idea! The event started in 1999 with only 21 writers but now sees over 250000 p a r t i c i p a n t s take place each

year, all of them with a tale to tell. Do you have a story just dying to get out? Fancy testing your writing stamina this November? Here’s how…

1. Go to www.NaNoWriMo.org. Create an account and fill in the details of your upcoming novel.

2. Start outlining and planning your story, but refrain from any writing! You will get the chance soon enough.

3. On November 1, begin writing! No plot? No problem! Just let your creative juices flow and keep typing. You will watch your own epic unfold before your eyes. Remember that your goal is to write 50000 words by midnight November 30. Pace yourself and have a mini-goal each day (e.g. 1700 words per day).

4. At the end of the 30-day deadline, upload your novel for official verification. And that’s it, you will be a novelist!

Besides all of this, an amazing part about NaNoWriMo is the work that they are inspiring around the globe with young writers. This year, the Young Writer’s Program (YWP) will support nearly 2000 classrooms and 60000 inspired independent kid-novelists worldwide. What an incredible inspiration! The YWP website is loaded with resources for teachers for teaching NaNoWriMo in schools, libraries, and community centers. Students gain tremendously from participating in this program with increased creativity, writing skills, self confidence and time management skills.

My family and I are fortunate enough to live in Al Ain, a city which is a historical treasure trove. A few weeks ago I took my daughters to Al Jahili Park to get rid of their pent up energy and, while watching them bobbing up and down on the swings, I gazed over at Al Jahili Fort.

I was in awe and marveled at this magnificent building practically made of earth. The Jahili Fort is one of UAE’s most recognizable historic buildings. Built in 1891 by His Highness Sheikh Zayed the First (may God rest his soul) it was completed in 1898.

Al Jahili Fort was a symbol of power as well as serving as the royal summer residence. Set in beautiful landscaped gardens, the fort previously served as the main defense of Al Ain’s lush palm groves.

Today, the fort is the hub of many cultural events in Al Ain. It plays host to the renowned World of Music and Dance Concert (WOMAD) each year as well as being the destination for classical music lovers every May as they descend upon the fort to hear their favorites as part of the Abu Dhabi Classics festival line up.

The fort boasts an informative Visitor Information Center, a café, a bookshop and a permanent exhibition displaying fascinating photographs and the extraordinary memoirs of British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger (affectionately referred to locally as Mubarak bin London), who crossed the harsh deserts of the Empty Quarter.

Al Jahili Fort is a combination of old and new materials and technologies; mud bricks, palm fronds and trunks sit side by side with floor cooling systems to create a building that has managed to preserve its unique heritage while remaining an integral part of modern society.

MY WORLD

Back in the day, when I felt like I had all the time in the world, throwing my things in a solitary suitcase and going off to travel the world was my dream. Fast forward to today and somehow my checked-in baggage has quadrupled and holidays seem to be

fairly far and few between. You’ve guessed it, I had kids. Now choosing my next holiday sees me debating over whether I can handle a 13-hour flight with children in tow, if I can deal with their jet-lag tears for half the holiday or if I can even afford to fly us all so far around the world in the first place. Pretty often, the answers are no, no and definitely no!

So what does that mean? Where should families like us go when it comes to vacations? Well, only four and half hours away lies the ideal holiday destination for any family. A place with perfect year-round weather, crystal clear waters and lots of family fun. Where is this place? The stunningly breathtaking Seychelles.

Now, bear with me.

I’m well aware that the word ‘Seychelles’ goes hand in hand with ‘honeymooners’ and ‘expensive’ but that’s changing. Now, with daily flights from the UAE and a wide range of accommodation to suit almost any budget, the Seychelles is a perfect family holiday choice.

If money is no object, you can still choose to have an opulent family holiday in one of the many luxurious 5 star resorts or private island retreats. However, if you’re budget conscious, you can enjoy an equally wonderful time in the charming self-catering establishments, guesthouses or magnificent villas dotted across the main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

So far so good: it’s accessible, affordable and, being in the same time zone as the UAE, is also jet-lag free! What’s more, every single nationality can pick up their visa on arrival and Mahe’s small international airport means there’s no long arrival lines! And once you get there, well that’s when the fun really begins.

Personally, my plan for day one would involve a visit to any of the island’s pristine beaches, perhaps reaching chapter two in my vacation book and watching the kids wearing themselves out sand castle building, splashing in the ocean and chasing a few scuttling crabs!

If you opt to visit Mahe or Praslin, I’d recommend hiring a car to go exploring in. The islands are just big enough to entertain you for a day’s driving and have picture perfect opportunities around almost every bend.

While on Mahe make sure you include a wander around Victoria, the world’s smallest capital city which is home to a mini Big Ben, only one set of traffic lights and a colorful, vibrant market place. Other must-do’s are a stopover at the stunning Mission Lodge viewpoint, a relaxing refreshment at La Plaine St. Andre Distillery, tea at the famous Jardin Du Roi, lunch at the laid back Surf Café and, if you want to savor a menu unchanged since 1972, a visit the renowned Marie Antoinette Restaurant. Kids will love the giant land tortoises in the Botanical Gardens or the glass-bottom

boat trips through the Marine Park, hikes in the hills, underwater snorkeling adventures or the fantastic fishing. Once they’re taken care of, hire a babysitter and head off to indulge in a few of the island’s sensational spas.

Over on Praslin, you need to make sure you visit the famous Anse Lazio Beach before heading over to the legendary Vallee de Mai, home to the plant with the world’s heaviest seeds, the Coco de Mer. A word of warning, do your homework before you go as there’s likely to be lots of gasps, giggles and questions from the kids! Lastly, there’s the beautiful and quiet La Digue Island, where bicycles and ox-carts are still the norm and everyone becomes a model on the pink sands of Anse Source D’Argent, the world’s most photographed beach.

So, why not take the hassle out of family travelling and go where ‘island-time’ is easily accessible, refreshingly affordable and altogether beautiful? You never know, maybe this time, you’ll actually be able to use the words ‘family holiday’ and ‘heavenly’ in the same sentence!
