St louiS i love you, but you’re bringing me down

Thanks To recenT evenTs, you now know abouT where I grew up. I wIsh you dIdn’T.I’m from st Louis, home of the Ferguson municipality, where unarmed black teen Michael brown was gunned down by a police officer. The officer was not charged with wrongdoing. In the aftermath, Ferguson residents have protested for months. They’re calling the protests “unrest”. even wikipedia calls it that.what’s worse than seeing your hometown become the center of a global argument about racism and police brutality? a lame, insulting euphemism to describe it. Let’s call it what it is: helplessness, hopelessness and anger among people treated like shit for centuries.before we move on, let’s have a self-honesty check. racist people and policies are everywhere, even here in Queenstown. There are also people fighting for equality and justice everywhere. st Louis just happens to be a particularly broiling hotbed of civil rights issues. This isn’t by happenstance. Located on the MIssissippi river on the border between slave and free states, st Louis was a major slave-auctioning center during the mid 19th century. It was the home of the 1857 dred scott court decision, which held that blacks were not entitled to the same

constitutional rights as whites. one of the worst race riots in us history took place in east st Louis in 1917 when 3000 whites stormed the streets, hunting down and beating black residents in protest of workforce integration. From 1916 to 1948, it was illegal to move to a street in st Louis if more than 70% of the inhabitants were of a different race. Most st Louis schools were completely segregated until the 1980’s.st Louis is what happens when a city waits too long to reform. It’s the most racially segregated city I’ve ever been to. To this day, there are very clear “white” and “black” parts of town, with socioeconomic borders so visibly obvious that it’s almost surreal.nobody will ever know exactly why Michael brown was shot, if he was assaulting the police officer, or if the officer legitimately feared for his life. none of that matters and that’s not what folks in Ferguson are protesting about. They are angry about where they are at: poor, under-educated, marginalised. and they are angry about why they are there: a city that has made piss-poor efforts to undo it’s wrongdoings. There’s still hope for the city. It’s never too late to be reborn. but the rebirth of a racist society takes time and empathy, both of which are running low in st Louis.

If you drInk and detox, you’re a bloody IdIot.yep, there I’ve said it. If you’re thinking of staying dry for January because your liver is going to take a hammering over the festive period you’re a rolled gold, first class, prize-winning chump. firstly, detoxing for a month, in the words of consultant liver doctor Mark Wright “is medically futile”. It doesn’t really do you any good at all.Secondly, it means that you get to avoid asking some hard questions about why you’re overdoing it on the sauce. as the public debate about problem alcohol consumption in new Zealand starts to ramp up it’s easy to focus on what people are drinking, when they do it, how and how often they drink but it’s a lot more complicated to consider why they do it and more specifically, why they drink in hazardous quantities. It’s a much harder question to answer because there are so

many potential answers. at different times I’ve consumed alcohol to celebrate, console, forget, find courage, numb pain, relax, as a treat or to enhance food, bond with strangers or colleagues, show off, out of habit and quite often because I was pressured into it by friends. If we start to understand why we’re drinking we’ll have a better chance of drinking for great reasons and taking control of our consumption, removing the need for a ‘one-hit’ detox period that fools us into thinking we’re looking after our liver. So, whatever you do in 2015, don’t stop drinking, life’s better with a beer. Just go and do something less boring instead every now and again.

erupTIng, sIzzLIng, expLodIng. no noT My recenT experIence wITh The greaT brITIsh bbQ, buT here. now. IT’s an excITIng TIMe In The LIFe oF QueensTown. been here 5 MInuTes or 50 years - IT doesn’T MaTTer. There’s so much coming out of the people who live here and I for one am like a pig in the proverbial. Queenstown has always had it’s growth and expansion of talent and creativity over the years. It’s a hub of nations so how could it not? There’s music, arts and people with ideas so whacky you think they couldn’t be possible. Tie a bungy cord to your legs and throw yourself off a bridge, why not? build a house made of glass jutting out of a rock high on the hillside overlooking a main road? go on then. skiing down the great mountain side in winter whilst annihilating yourself on a mountain bike in summer? I’m there. but something feels different. Ideas are expanding, new creative heads are making something happen, out with the old and in with

the new. This doesn’t mean the ethos of Queenstown has gone away. The ‘anything goes’ mentality and simple character of the place still remain but the moving and shaking up of the foundations is happening for sure. The town centre itself doesn’t have to be the only hub anymore, there’s new bubbles of magic popping up outside of town - arthurs point, Frankton road, remarkables area. people are thinking outside the square - guerrilla drive-in (bringing you movies anywhere), The hangar co-working space (shared office space, movie theatre, bar), remarkables Market (fresh local produce right next to a huge supermarket with a monopoly), The sherwood hotel and restaurant with a, yes believe it, mountain bike jump park out by the veggie patch. Many, many new folk using writing and photography to ultimately draw the tourists in to this beautiful town. If you stick around long enough, and most people do, you will see something beautiful happening. right here. right now.

So the laSt of the turkey curry iS finally gone, you’’ve made peace with the in-lawS, you’re back at work (though you Still can’t look tracey from accountS in the eye) and the credit card Statement iS pinned to the fridge.and what else have you done? oh yeah, you made yourself a few “resolutions”. well done. if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, then new year’s resolutions must be the on-ramp: everyone starts there but they don’t stay long.of course, there have been studies done time and again that show that resolutions just don’t work. in the northern hemisphere it’s because everyone’s so depressed in the winter that the kfcs and pubs of this world do a roaring trade dragging people away from their misery. and of course down here, why would you *not* want to go to the pub when it’s a very balmy 25 degrees out and members of the opposite sex forgot to get dressed properly? diet and healthy living be damned, you’re a long time dead, you justify to yourself.and why the hell not? if you want to be the agent of change you can but only because you want to change, not because the new year has come around and you think it’s a good idea

to spend 900 bucks on two weeks of gym membership. just think how many pies that could buy - 200, you’re welcome! and your mates will miss you down the pub, don’t you realise how selfish you’re being?! i mean, okay, if you can’t see your feet by all means dial down the maccas and if you’re coughing your guts up with esophageal cancer perhaps cut down on the bensons. but the wholesale cutting out is going to see you fail quicker than an italian-made, well, anything really.of course with all this preaching you’d think i’d have it all figured out with all my issues nicely ironed and in a row. of course not, that’s just crazy talk.So with that in mind, by the end of march, i’ll have a six pack.

In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the Source Code, a programme that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

a winter’S paddle

i was in for a real treat, an overnight kayaking trip to doubtful Sound. it was an epic adventure that i had been looking forward to for weeks beforehand. we met our guide tara before starting our journey towards doubtful, catching a ferry that crosses lake manapouri then a coach that took us through native rainforest. when we reached deep cove we packed up our kayak and headed into the fiord. the next 24 hours would be spent cruising around in our double kayak with tara leading us into the majestic arms of the Sounds. tara grew up in invercargill and

studied in aoraki at the polytech for outdoor recreation. her first kayaking job was in doubtful Sound and she has also worked in thailand and australia as a guide. in may 2012 she decided to take on the trip of a lifetime. her goal was to circle both islands in a sea kayak and that is exactly what she did. She wrote “a winter’s paddle” after her 9-month journey around the islands but the book is mainly about the 5 months she took to circle the south. “that’s were the drama happened, the north island was pretty tame and relaxed.”She started the mission at the

14 15

Page 15: The Source | Jan 2014 | Reset | 487

beginning of winter, hence the title of the book. her motivation for the time of year was mainly convenience as her work season was ending but also the fact that no woman had ever set out on a sea kayak to circle new Zealand and that nobody would ever do it in winter. that 24 hours i spent in doubtful changed my perception on life. i caught myself looking up at the sheer cliffs of the Sounds and contemplating many things. the magnitude and size is somewhat inconceivable. it’s the type of experience that opens your eyes, your mind and your heart. it completely resets the senses. the icing on the cake was tara’s extensive knowledge of the Sounds. tara’s next adventure is to cross

the north arctic this winter. what this means is carrying rifles on kayaks to protect her and fellow companions from polar bears and a lot of money to fund the trip. this is attempting a mission that no kayakers have ever completed or survived. Follow Tara’s kayaking adventures on her blog: tarasjourneys.com You can also win a copy of Tara’s book A Winter’s Paddle by liking our Facebook page:The Source NZ

ABOuT: The bath house sits elegantly in the afternoon sun right on the shores of Lake wakatipu. This beachside restaurant and bar has been a Queenstown landmark since it was built to commemorate the coronation of king george v in 1911. It was originally constructed with changing rooms for the modest swimmers of the day but has become a local favourite for tapas, freshly-cooked food and of course a great selection of wines. The service is outstanding and the location is probably the best there is in or out of town.SPeCIALTIeS: breakfast, lunch and really great scones.SOuRCe SAYS: If you want to step away from the hubbub of downtown it’s a two minute stroll along the parade to this cosy, warm, lakeside hideaway.

the evilS of menStruationIn parts of central Europe menstruating women have traditionally been regarded as having mystical powers. A menstruating woman can prevent dough from rising and can make flowers wilt and die. More modern versions of this old wives’ tale say that having your perm done while menstruating is useless, since your hair will straighten itself in a short time. They also say that bathing in a pool or the sea, even while wearing a tampon, is bad for your health.

This belief gave rise to the theory of ‘menotoxin’, a chemical supposedly present in the bodies of menstruating women that is lethal to other living beings. The belief is still held by some Orthodox Jews of Ashkenazi ancestry, doubtlessly influenced by the Talmudic laws that suggest that menstruating women are impure.

Needless to say, none of these beliefs have any basis in reality.

martin ScorSeSe doeS it. moby doeS it. heck, even morally-ambiguouS media mogul rupert murdoch doeS it. hmm, maybe that’S not the beSt endorSement. the point iS, they’re all rich, all powerful and they’re all at it. no, i’m not talking about Snorting cocaine off hookerS’ butt cheekS. i’m talking about meditation.for those of you that think meditation is all about banging tibetan gongs and talking in a really quiet whispery voice, you’re wrong. well, no, you’re a bit right but you don’t need to do it that way. you can be admiring the silence at the top of Queenstown hill, slouched in your lazyboy, or even on the toilet if that’s where you find the time or the inclination. and there’s loads of it on offer here in aotearoa. peel back the gumboots and you’ll find kiwis are a real spiritual lot. nationwide retreats, courses and meditation gurus proffer an alternative kind of release to the archetypal kiwi pastimes of drinking our bodyweight in Speights, shooting, fishing and jumping off stuff. So, why meditate? multiple neurological studies have shown that meditation can improve cognitive abilities, reduce stress, activate

unused regions of the brain, even reduce chronic pain and enhance immunity. and that’s just for starters. for some practitioners, meditation is a way of life, for some it’s religion and for others it’s a spiritual, non-religious means of connecting – with themselves, other people, higher beings and the world in general.curious Queenstowners can pay a visit to our own little-known secret, dharma house on lake Street. the lovely alan from dharma house kindly summed up the premise of Queenstown’s only meditation centre. “the dharma centre is non-sectarian and supports awakening to wisdom and compassion through non-clinging awareness. the advantage to locals is in having a range of informed instruction and support from great traditions of liberation right here in Queenstown.”think of meditation as a mind-based health-food shop. we all take care of our bodies, so why not our spirits and minds? instead of a shot of wheatgrass, how about a few minutes of mindfulness, transcendental meditation or Qi gong? visualise, circulate energy, focus on your heart’s rhythm, detach yourself from your thoughts – whatever works for you. nourish those neurons.

taking over half a year ago and kicking the refurb into hyperdrive in the dying months of 2014, the result is nothing less than what we’d expect. in every project there are a million forks in the road, decisions to go the easy way or the right way. at every turn they made the decision that you’d want them to.live music space, purpose built mountain bike track, yoga studio, outdoor fire pit to start. up the ante with a complete interior re-fit - hipster wet-dream mix of industrial light, dark cork walls and bespoke furniture a go-go. the restaurant specialises in raw, organic and vegies grown on-site and selectively sourced proteins. the bar is a well worn hardwood church filled with a enough good whisky to make a Scotsman weep and enough cocktails to make his mrs willing to take him home for the night. we aren’t going to paint the whole picture for you - this is the sort of place that is best discovered on your own terms, in your own time. ease into it, drop by and settle in. like a good whisky the Sherwood is best savoured and something tells me this vintage is only going to get better with age.

DEAREST,This morning, when you felt a bump as you backed out of the drive, that was me. I balled myself up behind the rear wheel. I’ve been planning this for a while, though I suppose this shall come as a shock to you. It is, was, the best thing for both of us. I am sorry.Let me go back. That day you invited me to live with you was one of the best days of my life. Mum got it off with a tall, silvery-haired and wild creature and I was born unwanted. My siblings had endearing traits and were all quickly adopted into loving homes. I, the weaker, ganglier, uglier infant, was placed in the centre. Forced to sleep on a makeshift steel bed with ragged blankets used a hundred times by a hundred others in my unfortunate state. Frayed and softened by over-washing and worried bodies that writhe in the night-time. They smelt like it too. Steel always feels wet. Low ceilings always seemed to bear down on me and in my youth I was afraid of being crushed in my sleep. Ironic now that I choose to watch the wheels of your car gently crushing me. You always made sure your wheels had regulation 3mm treads. I saw you with the ruler. You were obsessed. I almost take pleasure in you seeing the entrails of my body and my powdered spinal cord packed tightly into those carefully measured treads. I’m laughing at you now.

You have no idea how happy I was when I saw you. When I realised that you wanted us to be together, to let me share your home. Do you know that feeling? When you first move into someone else’s house? Each home has its own smell. Set in mortar and bricks and plaster since the day it was built and seasoned and matured by the personalities that inhabit it afterwards. Your home is musty, dampened, warm textiles and oak furniture breathing outwards. Slowly. Each inhabitant also has its own smell. You are sweet and sticky, like getting up late on a Sunday afternoon drenched in last night’s perfume. And then there’s the food you cook. So different from the empty, salt enthused stuff they could afford to feed us at the centre. The Saturday fry-up that released fatty globules into the air. The sharp, crisp, hint-of-spice Friday night Sav Blanc and Monday morning’s fresh and energetic scent of attempted healthy eating. That’s a lot of smells. The atmosphere is thick with smells and one cannot be comfortable unless an intimately familiar smell mingles in the air with them, talking to the others and announcing: I’m here! I’m here! You told me to make myself feel at home, so I did. I added my own perfume. How was I to know then that you liked the dank, unwholesome stench of the landing armchair? I honestly thought I

was improving it. Adding my own gentle-warm touch.Apparently not. You were furious. Do you remember? You threw me out of doors and it was raining. I mused and mewed and hid under a privet hedge. I was young and confused. I tried to be more... subtle, after that. You found the patch behind the wardrobe but it took you a while. You covered it in manufactured, plastic scents that make the nostrils bleed. Do you remember? Then, there was the incident when you left the cupboard door open. I could see pretty coloured tails of coats and dresses coaxing me through the gap into a dark womb that smelt intimately of you. How could I resist? I argue now that I wanted to know you a little better. I’d been living with you for some time, but we still both had our... dark, unexplored closets. I wasn’t expecting you to shut the door and slip off for a whole evening with your friends without one though about where I was, if I was safe. It was a combination of things, that accident. The fear of being closed in that still haunted me from my days at the centre. And the large meal I’d had that morning. You were gone for six hours. I cannot help my natural functions. I suppose things were bad for a while. You know we never recovered from that day, it was the first notch in our relationship and after that, each incident, however insignificant, was another permanent notch. There were still cuddles, you’d brush my hair and I would curl up and sleep happily beside you. But I could

sense that you had realised that adopted family carries a burden, something harder to forgive, harder to carry, when you remembered that you’d chosen that burden. That you could always reverse the choice. I’m being kind and cruel by taking that responsibility away from you now. Last week was the end for us, dearest. I admit that I behaved coquettishly. That I spent the nights howling around the streets and the days lazing on the sofa. However, spreading my scent around the neighbourhood, fighting with the other boys and flirting with all the girls was only my natural instinct and I would have calmed a little when my adolescent state subsided. It was irritating to you, yes, but that did not, would never, could ever, ever give you the right to have me castrated. You had me drugged, forcibly took away a part of me and acted as though this was the solution to the problems in our relationship. You are abhorrent to me. You disgust me and I can never forgive you. But I can never stop loving you. I’ll miss your gentle touch, and the sweet things you’d do for me like warmed milk before bedtime in the winter. I could never leave you because you gave me my first and only home. You’re the only person I ever had the chance to love, and though you abused me, though you stole my manhood, I cannot deny that I had some attachment to you. This is the best thing for both of us. I am sorry.Yours,THE CAT.

it’s time for old jock to head for the nursing home and his daughter jessie takes him in, kicking and screaming.on arrival the receptionist reassures jessie that this behaviour is quite normal and he will settle down soon.a couple of days later jessie visits her dad and finds him in great spirits. ‘how are you dad?‘ she inquires, to which jock replies ‘this is a great place, every night i get a large dram and a viagra tablet.’outraged jessie heads off to confront the Staff nurse, ‘what is the meaning of this, my dad tells me he gets a large dram every night and a viagra tablet?’ ‘ah well,’ says the nurse ‘your dad loves a dram so we don’t see any harm in him having one at night. ‘okay, what about the viagra tablet though? ‘oh thats just to stop him rolling out of bed.’

Another sign you might be a redneck - if you view the next family reunion as a chance to meet girls.Or - Your hairdo has ever been ruined by a ceiling fan.

december the 4th repreSentS the biggeSt ‘reSet’ event of my life. Six yearS ago it waS the laSt morning i woke up with a hangover. i made it almoSt a month without a drop after vowing that “i would never drink again”. but i had tentatively ventured out on a boat cruiSe with the good intention of remaining Sober only to find mySelf loSing complete control, aS had been happening with alarming regularity the laSt few yearS. after blowing over $200 on bubbles and shots i staggered home, full of drunken remorse. the next few months were exhausting as i began to build a life without alcohol. i quit the job i was barely holding onto, went on a benefit, attended vast amounts of aa meetings, considered rehab, did yoga and meditated. Slowly the gripping anxiety and morbid depression that had gradually taken hold of every part of my life began to ebb away. i woke up feeling good, feeling at peace. no more thoughts of “oh god, what did i do last night?”

greeted me first thing in the morning. i attempted socialising once again without alcohol. at first it was like being in a foreign land but i found out it wasn’t so bad. i may have headed home earlier and without a half-baked memory of a mad night out but i had my sanity intact. i laughed and i danced and i didn’t lose anything – especially my dignity. these days not drinking has become my social norm and i still have to work hard to deal with life on life’s terms without numbing out. Some of the hardest things i’ve faced have happened in sobriety. i’ve learnt that my drinking was a desperate attempt to escape my pain. pain is a part of life, at least while sober i can process it and get through it a lot faster and with less damage done. this is just my story – a story of resetting what had become a never-ending drink fuelled nightmare.this time of year can often become a challenge to enjoy ourselves without the comforting aid of alcohol. all i know is that i use to destroy christmas, now i experience it with my eyes wide open and i remember it!

It’S 2015 So get rId of tHat old look and try SoMetHIng neW! Modern CutS and ColourS are tHe eaSIeSt Way for guyS and gIrlS to CHange tHeIr lookS. try tHeSe StyleS:1. tHe MeSSy bob Hermione (aka emma Watson) made this style popular in 2014, and it’s set to return next year with a messy edge and a rough-cut fringe. When the bob is cut just under your chin it creates a feminine, elegant jaw line. tousle with hairspray, mousse or if you can’t be bothered - your fingers - and you’re good to go. the best thing with this style is: If you don’t like it, it will grow out quickly.2. HaIr aCCeSSorIeS kendall Jenner, kim kardashian’s little sis, rocked some roses and other garden flowers in her hair on the dolce & gabbana Spring 2015 runway. embellishments work best when pinned into a bun or braid to anchor them down. keep the roses, flowers or metal brooches small so you look more ‘modern hair style’ than ‘day at the races.’3. guyS’ trendS Well-groomed beards are in for spring! this is great news for Queenstowners who have loved a good beard for decades. use

clippers once a week to keep stragglers in check, and keep the mo short and off the lips. try pulling your hair roughly to the side to complement the facial hair. let it grow out in winter, but summer’s the time to keep it neat guys!Heads up guys: long, gently messy (but still clean!) hair is in style again. think danny davis or kelly Mcgarry, comb it out when wet and mess it around as it dries. keep it clean though guys, and if you wear hats you need to wash hair more as hats make your hair oily.4. Strong HIgHlIgHtS In dark HaIr brunette beauties, follow Halle berry’s lead and add chunky ribbons of slightly lighter browns or dark blondes to a messy bob. one day at the salon and you’ll have a whole new look.If you’ve got hair, get jiggy.
