Mionetto was founded in 1887 by francesco Mionetto in the village of valdobbiadene, italy, nestled between the adriatic coast to the east & the towering doloMites to the north. Mionetto is one of the oldest wine producers in Prosecco (they started the same year as the U.S gained rights to Pearl Harbor) with long-established relationships with key growers who have supplied them with the region’s best fruit, not only in the past, but will do so for years to come. The “Glera” grape is the official grape of Prosecco and planted by the Romans,

it is considered to be one of Italy’s oldest grapes and its name can be traced back to the town of Prosecco, Friuli. Mionetto uses the Charmat method, in fact, Sergio Mionetto, Grandson of Mionetto’s founder, was the first to introduce this technique to the area; until then “method champenoise” was used. This process allows Prosecco to preserve its freshness, delicate nuances and flavors of apples and citrus for longer, along with the ability to bottle as orders come in to the winery and never before that time, something Mionetto prides themselves as the only to do so. This process takes roughly 60 days depending on acidity, residual sugar and pressure.

Mionetto is acknowledged as the winery who put the Prosecco category on the map here in the U.S. with explosive growth,

especially over the past 10-15 years.

Thanksgiving dinner is the perfect occasion to bring out a fine wine or two to share with family and friends in celebration of this special event. Beaujolais, especially

Beaujolais Nouveau, has been the wine of choice for many because of its charming and delicious flavor, matching harmoniously with turkey, cranberry sauce and a multitude of other dishes being served at the dinner table. Other typical choices are fine bottles of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Champagne and Riesling. All are excellent companions, especially Riesling. An entire piece could be written on the virtues of Riesling as the optimal white for Thanksgiving dinner, however, many of us already know that. With this in mind, it is heartily recommend that wine shops feature a nice selection of Alsatian, Austrian and German Rieslings during the holidays.

GewürztraminerWasn’t Gewürztraminer just mentioned above as a possible choice when discussing Rotgipfler? Yes, and for good reason. The similarities are apparent; they’re distant relatives. Gewürztraminer has more spice though, and can also have more weight and viscosity. It also has more flavor. Not to say that Rotgipfler is a lightweight. Far from it. It’s just that Gewürztraminer has LOTS of flavor: lychee fruit, rose petals, peaches, and passion fruit to name a few. When selecting a Gewürztraminer, look for one that is lower in alcohol such as one from Germany. One that is high in alcohol will likely be high in viscosity, making the wine too rich and ripe to marry well with turkey and its counterparts. A lighter, more delicate Gewürztraminer will work wonders and can offer a perfect match of lively spiciness and crisp flavor.

With only some 260 acres of this varietal planted in the entire world, and all of it in Austria, there’s good reason it remains unknown. Rotgipfler is a crossing between Traminer (not to be confused with Gewürztraminer although related) and Roter Veltliner. It is the perfect synthesis of its genealogy. The wine’s aromatics and spiciness of flavor come from Traminer’s DNA and its complexity and rich extract suggest that of Roter Veltliner’s. Wines made from Rotgipfler have flavor characteristics similar to a fine French Viognier or Gewürztraminer, both of which are good choices for Thanksgiving dinner as well. Along with its wonderfully spicy flavor, Rotgipfler is naturally high in acidity, allowing the wine to age gracefully over time. Try it, you’ll love it!

Wine made from Dornfelder may very well remind you of Beaujolais, and we know how delightful that is with Thanksgiving dinner. ZweigeltPronounced Tsveye-gelt, this is Austria’s most widely planted red wine varietal. It’s a cross between Blaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger) and St. Laurent (an old mutation of Pinot Noir). Blaufränkisch produces wines which can display power, tannin as well as acidity. Smokiness and black cherry essences are common flavors. St. Laurent on the other hand, is an aromatic varietal, producing wines of refinement and delicacy with hints of spiced cherries. With a history dating back to 1875, the Glenglassaugh Distillery, located in the Highlands in Portsoy just beyond the Speyside boundary at the east end of the beautiful Sandend Bay, was founded by Col. James Moir. He quickly established a reputation for making a quality whisky and the company prospered. He ran the distillery with his two nephews until 1892, when Glenglassaugh was purchased by Highland Distillers. After being completely re-built in 1960, the distillery continued to produce whisky until 1986 when it was closed. In 2013 a new chapter at Glenglassaugh begins with the acquisition by Billy Walker and The BenRiach Distillery Company, the intention being to bring the iconic distillery fully back to life.

A “Revival” in the Scottish Highlands

TorfaAt Glenglassaugh, in addition to the traditional production, they also produce a very limited quantity of whisky using richly-peated malted barley as the cereal varietal. The malted barley has been dried in the traditional way, over peat-infused kilns, giving the whisky its unique smoky flavor. Glenglassaugh ‘Torfa’, with its peaty, phenolic nature, is a unique expression, and is quite different to the usual style of whisky produced in the Highlands.

The combination gives the 1988 citrus notes, a delicious cooked orange flavor and plenty of fruit as well.

Vintage 2001: A new century in the makingIt has been 12 years since the last expression of The Glenrothes was judged to be worthy of the title Vintage. Now, in a fitting mark to the turn of the century, The Vintage 2001, bottled in 2012, has been selected from a variety of casks to deliver soft but stimulating and conversational properties.

It combines the maturity of oaky vanilla with the fullness of ripe black cherries and has a lingering, typically Glenrothes finish of soft spices. Not only that, it has wonderful length and depth, is hugely satisfying and is an excellent demonstration of the Malt Master’s skill and dedication to the art of wood management.

Ronnie Cox, The Glenrothes Brand Heritage Director, describes the Vintage 2001 as: “Deliciously creamy citrus wrapped tightly in the softness of aged oak. Complete and complex integrity in a glass.”

The Glenrothes normal wood policy uses a combination of Spanish and American oak, seasoned with sherry, bourbon and malt Scotch. Not so with the Alba Reserve.

For this expression John Ramsay has used Glenrothes matured exclusively in American oak refill bourbon casks. It therefore delivers coconut and vanilla in abundance, and is soft and mellow with a crème brulée flavor and feel.

Quercus Alba is the Latin name for white (or American) oak; and Alba is the Gaelic word for Scotland.

If it wasn’t for the vision of Jorge Ordonez, Chris Ringland and Jose Miguel Sanmartin, some of the greatest Garnacha vines the world has ever seen may have disappeared along with the families who farmed the slopes of Moncayo. Borja is situated in Northern Spain, on the western border of Aragon and has a surface like planet Mars with red dust and chunks of rock. This is a region that was devastated by economic isolation in the 1950’s. Sanmartin has had over thirty years of expertise in this area and has pleaded with growers not to rip out these amazing old vine Garnacha vines for higher yielding Tempranillo, Cabernet and Syrah, a move for which the Spanish Government were offering subsidies to do so in the early 1990’s. The town lies at the foot of the Moncayo mountain which peaks at 7,000 feet high making it the tallest mountain in the Sistema Iberico range, which runs from Rioja to Valencia. This

mountain only gets fifteen inches of rainfall per year. The only reason the vines get any is because Moncayo triggers precipitation. Weather fronts begin to drop rain when they cross the mountaintop and hit the warm air rising up the slopes from the valley. Even in harsh dry periods, the roots of these ancient vines run deep and can find moisture. It is believed through DNA evidence that Garnacha (known as Grenache in France and Cannonau in Sardinia) was first grown in this region of northern Spain.

In 1992 Jorge Ordonez (the man responsible for bringing some of Spain’s greatest wines to America) and Jose Miguel Sanmartin (GM of Bodegas Borsao) joined forces to bring Garnacha of incredible quality and value to the U.S. In 2001, Chris Ringland (one of the best known winemakers in Australia) fell in love with Moncayo, especially the old mountain vineyards, and was fortunate that some came up for sale due to farmers’ children not wanting to pursue the hard life of farming this poor region. Five generations of vignerons have farmed over 210 acres with tiny yields of 500 grams of grape bunches per vine.

A COUPLE EXTRAORDINARY BLENDED MALTS, NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH BLENDED WHISKY…

Blends sometimes get a bad rap but there’s a big difference in terminology. Blended, or vatted malt, means a blending of single malts married together. Blended whisky is different, it contains unaged grain whisky along with malted whisky.

So, read closely and try not to confuse the work of little artisan blenders of malt, that are sourcing great whisky and applying their talented palates by combining extraordinary flavors artfully, with the mega-industrialized distilleries that are watering down pure malts with non-descript grain alcohol.

HIGH WEST DOUBLE RYEA blend of two straight rye whiskies that combine the feisty properties of a high rye two-year-old and the saddle smooth richness of a sixteen-year-old. The two-year-old has a 95% rye, 5% barley malt mashbill. The older rye has a “barely legal” rye mashbill of 53% rye and 37% corn. The extra age and corn provides some extra sweetness to calm the “bite” of the younger rye for a relationship that works very well when used in classic cocktails like the Manahattan and Sazerac. And High West Double Rye is priced accordingly to ring in at a per ounce cost suitable for a cocktail lucky enough to be made with it.

CAMPFIREHigh West Campfire is the world’s only three-whiskey blend utilizing a unique international whisky known for it’s smoky quality, Scotch! Bourbon, rye, and peated Scotch combine in one bottle for one of the world’s most unique whiskey combinations. The faint smoke qualities of the Scotch are backed by the sweetness of the Bourbon and spicy kick of the rye to make one complex sipper.

SON OF BOURYESon of Bourye is a blend of straight Bourbon and rye whiskies and a decendant of the original “first of its kind” whiskey blend, Bourye. This unique whiskey is blended of finished Bourbon that could be bottled as such and finished rye that could be bottled and labeled as such and put into one bottle. The Bourbon mashbill is 75% corn, 20% rye, 5% barley malt and is a minimum of five years old. The rye’s mashbill is 95% rye and 5% barley malt and is a minimum of five years old.

A Midwinter Nights DramA limited release of Rendezvous Rye finished in port and French oak barrels.

This is a very unique rye whiskey that tastes like the flavors of Christmas.

The name is a play on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. When we first tasted this special whiskey, it seemed perfect for a really cold night, hence, A Midwinter Night’s Dram.

On the nose, the rye forms a beautiful base of vanilla, caramel and cinnamon; the port barrels enhance with plums and dried fruits; the French oak provides a spice accent.

In the mouth, a proper Christmas plum pudding with lovely mulling spices, dried fruits, and crème anglaise. It finishes long and fruity.

Made from 100% malted barley of the finest quality, freshly ground for each and every batch in-house on a custom roller mill. The custom-made German hybrid still is operated by hand. Each still run is negotiated to collect only the heart, the purest form of alcohol. Air-dried, well-seasoned, perfectly-toasted American white oak matures and softens the spirit. This marriage of fine oak and whisky imparts a palate to the whisky bringing out vanilla, caramel and honey. Before bottling, the whisky is cut with water that is drawn from deep under the distillery from a natural spring. Nowhere in the process, however, is there peating of the malt like Scottish single malt, so this will be an alternative single malt for all the smoke heads out there, and a domestic one at that.

Haro, RiojaBodegas Muga was founded in 1932 by Issac Muga Martinez and is located in the historic Railway Station Quarter of Haro (Rioja Alta). This family run company is one of the oldest, most elegant and traditional Rioja producers. This Bodega has never stood still and has become one of the cornerstones of Rioja with wines of exemplary quality from its own 173 acres of vines. The winery controls every aspect of the viticultural and vinification process from the vineyards to crafting their own oak barrels. Bodegas Muga is one of only five wineries in the world to have their own cooperage and they directly import the oak from the U.S. and France. They age the wood on site for three years and shuffle the oak every two months for even exposure. It takes five years of training to become a barrel expert at Muga. All fermentation and aging is done entirely in oak barrels. They only use natural airborne yeasts and filter with egg whites.
