“The difference between success and failure is so subtle, you can’t even see it or recognize it during the
process. And here’s how real success is built: By the time you get the feedback the real work’s already done.”
(pg. 37)
“The Slight Edge is already working, right now, either for you or against you. So don’t wait.“ (pg. 38)
“It’s never too late to start. It’s always too late to wait.” (pg. 40)
“If you’re doing the few simple errors in judgement, time will expose you-- no matter how well you appear to
be doing right now. Time is the great equalizer.” (pg. 98)
“One of the quickest and most direct routes to getting yourself up and on to the success curve is to get out of
the past.” (pg. 105)
“Devote some serious focused time and effort into designing a crystal clear picture of where you’re going.”
(pg. 106)
“You are building your long-term security and financial freedom, or dismantling it. And your health is building
day by day…or ebbing slowly away.” (pg.107)
“Your optimal rate of growth is always served best by a step-by-step approach of constant, never-ending
improvement, which lays solid foundations and builds upon them over and over.” (pg.128)
“Be not afraid of going slowly: be afraid only of standing still. – Chinese Proverb” (pg. 129)
“Why are these simple yet crucial things easy not to do? Because if you don’t do them they won’t kill you… at
least, not today. You won’t suffer, or fail or blow it- today. Something is easy not to do when it won’t
bankrupt you, destroy your career, ruin your relationships or wreck your health---today.” (pg.36)
“Here’s the unfortunate and powerfully destructive truth of being incomplete; it keeps the past alive.”
(pg.130)

FACES of The Slight Edge
“Momentum-Steady wins the race. Once you’re in motion, it’s easy to keep on keeping on. Once you
stop, it’s hard to change from stop to go.
Completion- Each and every incomplete thing in your life or work exerts a draining force on you,
sucking the energy of accomplishment and success out of you. Take on those incompletions in your
life just as you took on learning to walk.
Habit-Your habits are what will propel you up the success curve or down the failure curve.
Reflection-Being productive and being busy are not necessarily the same thing. Doing things won’t
create your success; doing the right things will. Were those actions productive? Did you take a step
forward?
Celebration-Keep your Slight Edge activities, your right choices and incremental successes, right out in
the open where you can see them and celebrate them. Acknowledge those steps, no matter how
small or insignificant they may seem at the time.” (pg. 138)

In Simple Rules, Sull and Eisenhardt masterfully challenge how we think about
complexity and offer a new lens on how to cope. They take us on a surprising
tour of what simple rules are, where they come from, and why they work. The
authors illustrate the six kinds of rules that really matter - for helping artists
find creativity and the Federal Reserve set interest rates, for keeping birds on
track and Zipcar members organized, and for how insomniacs can sleep and
