For elders in Sioux Lookout, the annual seniors Christmas dinner party plays a big part in making spirits bright. Tracks beside the Water tells the origins of the evening. “In 1957 several women at the United Church, including Margaret Atwood and Betty Jean Klassen, conceived the idea of a Christmas party for senior citizens. When the women’s groups of the other churches in town were approached about the project, the response was enthusiastic and a committee of women from Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, United and Ukranian Church groups was set up to plan the event.” The United Church hosted the 2014 seniors dinner, December 1 at the Legion, with Donna Prior and Sharon Yule co-convening. Prior noted this is the sixth time the duo has helmed the dinner together. “Our first meeting is near the end of October. We have one near the end of November and we don’t have another meeting until next October,” she said. “It’s really run like a military operation,” added Yule. Each church sends volunteers for serving, cooking and help in the kitchen, table setting, transportation, and more, covering every aspect of the evening with volunteer work. Yule estimates about 100 to 150 people volunteer to help with the dinner each year. “Then you’ve got the sorority who does gifts. You’ve got Rotary who is doing takeout meals. You’ve got Lions who are helping with transportation, Girl Guides, most of our turkey cutters came from the Masonic group,” said Yule. “It’s a community dinner for seniors, put on by a community.” Doug Lawrance inauguration Mayor Doug Lawrance is sworn in by Municipal Clerk Mary MacKenzie. All of the staff work together to prepare and cook the meal, which is sponsored by the Friendship Centre.
“This year we had
some students who came and assisted us with serving,” added Dovick.
She said the feast is something people look forward to.
“We just think it’s a good way to celebrate Christmas,” she said.
Dovick said the feast is one way of
reminding people that the Friendship Centre is open to all community members.
“everyone is welcome to come to the centre,” she said.
The staff estimates about 250 people were in attendance for the dinner.

almost total darkness as long as i can see the silhouette of horizon, but without that it’s guaranteed the boat will end up somewhere totally unexpected. The same holds true for snowmobiling with no reference points.
i paused for a short time at the edge of the bush, hoping for a short respite from the blindness, but eventually tossed aside my best judgement and set off slowly across the lake, watching intently for the headlight of any approaching snowmobiler silly enough to be out there.
eventually i came to the distant shoreline, and found myself only about 300 yards west of my house.
remarkable, some might say.
Truth is, i had expected to come to shore about a mile east of home. i was way out of whack. everything turned out fine, but it was good to reinforce the lesson that i just can’t navigate without some reference points.
it was just a good reminder lesson about traveling blind. it wasn’t
particularly dangerous on this occasion. i had been on the lake a few hours earlier. ice was good. No slush. No danger spots anywhere near. And, no matter where i ended up spotting land it would be within a mile or so from where i set out and it was all familiar to me, so i’d know right
where i was and be able to follow the shoreline home - which is what happened.
it’s just an amazing experience to realize how far off a person can get without some reference points for guidance.
i can sure cook up a storm on the barbeque, though - if I can find my way to it.

i don’t know if i’m the only person like this, but i really love to
do just about anything and everything, which has made it hard for me to pick a career to aim for. if i could, i’d work different jobs for each day of the week, but sadly it’s not possible.
usually, i don’t let others tell me what’s possible and not possible, because i believe that you can do anything that you set your mind to.
i used to be my number one hater. Sometimes i still can be. i would tell myself i couldn’t do anything. i would constantly bring
myself down. Whenever people complimented me i would tell myself not to believe them.
one day i got sick of feeling so bad all the time. So i slowly brought in the positive and let go of the negative, and continue to do that.
Now, i am a lot happier. i still have my
rainy days but as my math teacher would say, “Are you going to let a little rain ruin your day? No, pull out your umbrella and try your best to enjoy the day.” it was something like that.
Now i believe in myself more and more each day. i feel stronger, emotionally. i feel i can do anything i set my
mind to, so if i believe i can have a different job for everyday of the week, maybe i can.
Just kidding. As much as i would like that, i love the idea of being committed to one career and improving on it more and more. if i get tired of it i can always go back to fun, fun school.

goal to be achieved. A goal worth fighting for. in Canada we achieved democracy many
years ago. But even at our initiation, it wasn’t democracy as
we know it today. Women and various ethnic groups were excluded.
We have addressed those weaknesses and today we can be proud to live in a truly democratic country.
And a democratic town.
But there remain challenges in our exercise of democracy.
in a community comprised of 50% females we have a Council with two females and five males.
in a community with an average age in the thirties, we have a Council with an average age close to sixty.
in a community with a population that is now
more than half of aboriginal descent, we have not one person of aboriginal descent on our Council.
it will be our challenge and opportunity to consider all citizens when making our decisions and planning for the future of our community.
Sioux Lookout has a unique and privileged
position as a hub for approximately 30 First Nation
communities and the 30,000 people who live in those communities.
in the 1990’s we signed what was called the Four Party Agreement. The parties to that unprecedented agreement were the Federal Government, the Provincial Government, the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and ourselves – the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. That agreement led to the development of the Meno ya Win Health Centre. The Health Centre now employs 425 people and provides us with a level of health care unparalleled for a small, remote, rural community. The Health Centre continues to expand programs and facilities while creating new jobs. Council and the hospital Board will continue to advocate for a new 96-bed long-term care facility to meet the needs of our area’s population. We anticipate this facility will create 50 new jobs in Sioux Lookout.
in the education sector the Municipality is working with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board on the planning and construction of a new high school. The new school will allow for a planned growth in enrolment to 500 students. Many of those students will come here from northern First Nation communities. New jobs and opportunities will result for Sioux Lookout.
Sioux Lookout’s Municipal Airport, with over 120,000 annual passenger movements, continues to grow. The Airport is both a result of and a facilitator for our connection to the northern communities. it allows our community to truly call itself the hub of the north. Council has endorsed an expansion of our Airport Terminal Building and funding is being sought. The airport has serviced commercial properties ready for development. We intend to continue to be a key player in serving the north through our Airport. We have the potential to be involved in the emerging ring of Fire developments. A proposed food distribution centre, to be located at the Airport and serving the north, is being considered. This initiative is a direct result of the
Friendship Accord.
in the last term of Council the Municipality recognized our economic and social interdependence with the northern First Nations and entered into the Friendship Accord. An Accord with three First Nations declaring our shared desire to work collaboratively on social, health and economic issues.
At the last meeting of the previous Council a motion in support of a call for a national enquiry into the social tragedy of missing and murdered aboriginal women was defeated. The reaction from the public and aboriginal agencies and leaders illustrates the need for further dialogue with the community and at the Council table on this and similar social issues. in the spirit of our Friendship Accord, we will consult with our Accord partners, seek counsel from local aboriginal leaders and agencies, and we will bring this issue to the table of the new Council at our coming Council Meeting on December 17th.
Sioux Lookout is unique in many ways. our economy is one of them.
over the past three decades global and national economic conditions have been turbulent. During these years, although some sectors have suffered, overall Sioux Lookout has experienced economic stability and continued growth. This stability comes in part from our position as a service hub for northern communities. But it also comes from a diversity of economy that includes: forestry, railroad, tourism, professional sectors, health care, education and training, social services, government services, retail, air transportation and associated services, bulk fuel and construction materials supply and delivery, construction, hotels, restaurants, Fire Centre, First Nation agencies and business investment, small businesses, recreation and sports, arts and culture.
We can continue to grow and be stable by
recognizing our uniqueness. By embracing our difference. Let’s not be fooled and chase dreams of gold or big industry. They will come when it suits them and we will work with them in a planned manner that creates lasting prosperity for our community as well as success for the industries.
We can continue to succeed with diversity of economy.
By supporting businesses that are here and being open to new ones to come.
And by using what we have to build on in sectors such as health care, social service, justice, education, tourism.
We can use those sectors and our existing businesses, in combination with our location as hub of the north, to create a role for ourselves as a centre for conferences, for sports and recreation, for arts and culture.
When we consider our community we must consider ourselves fortunate to live here.
We have an enviable natural setting, abundant water and forest, and in general a prosperous community.
yet like most communities in Canada we face a significant challenge with what is in part unseen.
our below ground water and sewer infrastructure, and what is obvious to all, our roads.
These elements of our infrastructure are all in serious need of rejuvenation and repair. As is the case across Canada, maintenance and repair of these systems has been underfunded for many years. We now have a significant and growing problem and this provides us with our biggest single financial challenge.
it is also a challenge to our attitudes. As a Council we will need to talk about this issue
with the public and determine how we can begin to address it.
During the election most candidates offered ideas for improvements to our community. Some of the ideas related to how we do business, how we
provide services. Some were specific projects.
The challenge we now face when conducting business at the Council table is to be: collaborative, accountable, responsible, respectful, inclusive, open.
But we also face the challenge of tasks raised during the election:
Tasks that range from undertaking long term planning to dealing with the issues of the each day.
Seeking public input while streamlining processes. encouraging grassroots initiatives and utilizing
volunteers while efficiently moving agendas to realities.
Facilitating housing for seniors, young families, renters, purchasers, people on the margins, and people struggling to get into the mainstream.
reinvigorating Council Committees. resolving service and taxation issues outside the
urban core.Addressing social issues and policing costs.
While doing all this we also need to plan for and find funding to:
• Prepare a recreation master plan. • upgrade Front and King Streets and
redevelop Centennial Park.• Complete the Cedar Bay road. • Create more green space, parks,
playgrounds and recreation trails. • upgrade sidewalks.• upgrade the recreation centre. • Address daycare needs.• Plan and fund the Airport
Terminal expansion.
And more.
Well fellow Council members, we had better get started.
Next week we will be meeting as a Council and
undertaking strategic planning. We will consider all these and other ideas.
We will collaborate, prioritize, and prepare a strategy – a plan.
We will bring that to the public early next year in the form of a draft strategic plan.
For public review and input.
And for help from the community.
When we consider public input and ask for help we will be asking all of you.
it is our intention to engage as much of the community as possible.
We will engage you at public meetings, through Committees, volunteer groups, organizations, at your businesses, and through informal sessions.
We will engage you with a telephone call, a chat over a cup of coffee, at the grocery store.
And we will listen and learn.
We don’t come to this table with the answers. We come knowing that there are many issues. And we come knowing that through collaboration, communication, and consultation we can arrive at solutions and actions that will result in improvement.
As Mayor, and i am sure i can speak for all
of Council, we recognize the challenges and look forward to the opportunity to work for our community.
As a final note I would like to say thank you to all the Municipal staff who have helped me so much with the transition from election to inauguration. i look forward to working with you as we move ahead.
And thank you all for coming tonight. i hope that you can all find some time to rest and relax with your families and friends during the coming holiday season.

Fresh Market Foods donated turkeys, and Christmas cakes were donated by the Shriners.
For the convenors, the day starts early. Turkeys and other groceries were picked up and prepped over the weekend, with
the birds going in the oven the day before the dinner. Throughout the day on Monday, volunteers dropped by to help share the work.
“it’s a long day for the coordinators but it goes pretty fast, and the coordinators couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” said yule. “it’s just awesome… everything went really well and that makes your job as a coordinator so much easier, when you’ve got such a great team behind you.”
With turkeys roasted,
side dishes made, and decorations on the table, dinner was set for 170 people. The convenors never know quite how many people to expect, explained yule.
Along with the meals served at the Legion, warm plates are sent out to seniors who cannot be there. A set of dinners goes out to Sioux Towers, and rotary delivers meals to other seniors around town.
“Today we did about 30 take-outs,” shared yule.
of course, the seniors dinner is about more than just food. With music, gifts handed out by Santa Claus, socializing and a slideshow of images from past dinners put together by emcee Dick MacKenzie, seniors are able to get out and share a great time with friends who they may not see frequently.
“We want to encourage many people to come out for the dinner,” said yule. “it’s really a social evening.”
She highlighted the slideshow as a
meaningful part of the evening. This year’s images focused on the 2003 and 2013 dinners.
“A lot of people have passed away in that last 11 years,” said yule.
After sharing a meal, catching up and caroling, the seniors head out the door, smiling with gifts in hand.
“it’s an amazing collaboration of this community… it just is an amazing thank you, i think, from the community to our elders,” said Wendy MacDonald.
the table of the new council at our coming council meeting on December 17th.”
That news was greeted with excitement by members of the community who felt council made the wrong call.
in a letter to the editor published on December 3, Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre executive director Brenda Dovick said the decision “shows a lack of support for the country moving forward in addressing this crucial issue.”
She added, “When reading the comments made during this meeting, it truly saddens me that the majority of our local representatives (who are also men) have refused to acknowledge the disproportionate number of women and girls who have been targeted specifically due to the fact they are Aboriginal.
“Comments made by the mayor and council members indicate complete ignorance and a biased view in regard to the issue. However, we must remember that these few voices are not reflective of the entire community. A more appropriate response would have been to defer the decision to learn more about the issue, and seek counsel from the Friendship Accord membership.”
Dovick further stated, “The comment “the media has hyped this story up” indicates not only a lack of knowledge about the urgent nature of this issue, but shows a complete disregard for the continual efforts of indigenous groups who have worked tirelessly to bring this atrocity out of the shadows and into the light of the political arena.”
After hearing Lawrance’s comments Dovick said, “i feel it was a very positive step forward and a good relationship builder for our community. i look forward to working together and creating a great community for us all to live in.”
Sioux Lookout resident
Garnet Angeconeb, a respected elder in the community, said the outgoing council’s decision was a step backward in relations in the community.
Angeconeb stated in a mass email he sent out following council’s decision, “i am extremely disappointed that this (outgoing) council did not endorse the support motion calling for a national inquiry into the tragic issue of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, an issue that affects the collective conscience of this country, including Sioux Lookout. over the years this community, First Nations, health and educational entities, businesses, and many others, have worked really hard to foster meaningful relations and partnerships.
“The latest gesture of good will that promotes meaningful relations between Sioux Lookout and the area First Nations - the Friendship Accord - was signed on National Aboriginal Day in June 2012.
“And now, to have the local municipal leadership make such an adverse decision on an important issue of national significance is taking a huge step backward.”
upon learning of Lawrance’s decision to hold consultations on the matter and bring it back before council Angeconeb commented, “i’m very pleased to hear it. I think that’s definitely a good step in the right direction. i just really feel that this addresses many of the issues i had with what was defeated by the outgoing council. There should have been dialogue with the affected constituents. i’m absolutely thrilled that is going to take place. i think this is a really good step to look at this and base a decision on sound information and also to encourage dialogue. That’s a good thing.”
Councillor Steve Forbes, who spoke at the November 19 meeting about why he could not support the motion, said he is sticking to his principles and does
not plan to vote in favour of the motion when it comes back before council.
He shared, “While any member of council can choose to revisit an issue, i have to say i am disappointed, but not surprised, this one is back up for discussion. The mayor and i went for coffee shortly after the last meeting to discuss a variety of issues and he expressed his concern that the previous council voted this down. He made several salient points about why he wanted to bring it back, a few of which i agreed with.
“However it must be said that the only reason we are here, and this has now become a thing, is that one member of council decided they couldn’t take yes for an answer. in october the previous council passed a resolution from the Metis Nation of ontario endorsing their request of the federal government for this enquiry. i did not support the motion but i also didn’t speak to it, because it wasn’t an issue i wanted to speak in public about off the cuff.”
Forbes accused fellow councillor Joyce Timpson of grandstanding by bringing the matter to the table a second time.
Forbes continued, “regardless, when it came around the second time i stated my reasons for being opposed. My reasons were well thought out and researched carefully over a series of weeks. i wrote out everything i wanted to say and i took great care to explain and articulate why i was voting the way i did. There is no need to rehash them here. i fully expected to be the lone vote against but i must’ve made some sense as the resolution of support was voted down.
“Again, my feeling is dealing with this issue as municipal politicians is not our priority. our bailiwick is local issues. i ran to try and improve the infrastructure for the voters of Sioux Lookout and to try and give them value for the property tax dollars they send us every year. i feel that when councilor Timpson brought this issue back a second time, she politicized the plight of missing and murdered women... Aboriginal or otherwise. i don’t agree with it but here we are.”
Forbes, a former journalist, also said he is not surprised at the media attention the
matter is receiving. “i’m not surprised the CBC and other media ran with the story. Dog bites man isn’t a headline but man bites dog is. if all one reads is the headlines, our voting against the resolution doesn’t make sense. But none of the stories really explained why we did what we did.
“Apparently the Thunder Bay paper ran a story but what does it say that they couldn’t even be bothered to call me and ask one question?!”
He concluded, “Speaking frankly, i have had zero people contact me directly to tell me they disagree with my stance on the issue or council’s decision.
Garnet sent out a mass email to his address book explaining his displeasure with what we did. Two people replied to both he and i in that thread agreeing with him. But that was it.
“in fact, to be honest, i have had more people tell me they agree with my stance on the issue. While i respect Garnet’s opinion and passion, i don’t agree with him. And that’s oK. one of the things Garnet said was that our decision to vote against asking the Feds for a public enquiry was going to be a setback in relations with our friendship accord partner. Friends can remain friends and still have disagreements. But i’m not sure that this is even a disagreement considering that Lac Seul hasn’t passed their own resolution asking for this enquiry. Quite frankly, it’s a little sanctimonious of us.”
Brenda Dovick, second from left, and the women’s hand drum group, sang during the Sisters In Spirit Vigil October 4 to honour the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls.

NWHU tips for seniors this winterTim Brody
AssociAte editor
THe Northwestern Health unit is
asking senior citizens to make winter safety a priority during these snowy, cold months.
“Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can increase the likelihood
of falls, injuries and illnesses. This is especially true for seniors or individuals with limited mobility,” reads a NWHu press release.
The health unit passes along these key steps to protect seniors this winter.
“As community and
family members there are many simple ways we can help protect the safety of older people around us during the winter. if you have time, help remove ice and snow, or offer to provide rides to doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping,” shared randi Casey, Health Promoter.
She continued, “Try to check in on seniors as often as possible in person or over the phone. Because it is harder to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during the winter months. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and
isolation, and in some cases, depression.”
The health unit reminds seniors to dress for the cold to avoid frostbite or hypothermia.
Warm socks, a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf are all recommended.
in very cold temperatures, cover all exposed skin and use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs. Always remember to wear shoes or boots that have good traction to help avoid slips and falls.
it is recommended
that seniors not perform snow removal. request assistance from a neighbour, friend, family member, or consider a low-cost snow removal service.
To learn more about gift ideas that can help keep seniors healthy and safe, people are encouraged to visit the health unit website www.nwhu.on.ca.

Sioux Lookout girls curling team provincials-boundTim Brody

A Sioux Lookout girls curling team will be off to the
provincial championship tournament in Sault Ste. Marie in January.
November 28, 29 and 30 the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club hosted the Northern ontario Curling Association (NoCA) Best Western region 1 Junior Championship.
Jenna Poirier’s Sioux
Lookout rink defeated Hailey Beaudry’s Fort Frances rink to advance.
rounding out the team are Kacie ransom, Cassidy romyn, Taylor edmond, and Ashlyn Fukushima.
Coach Glen Poirier stated, “They did what they had to do to advance to the provincials.”
He said if the girls win the provincial competition, they will advance to the
national competition.Skip Jenna Poirier
said her team is excited to compete.
The Sioux Lookout girls curling team has enjoyed great success over the past few years in advancing to the provincials.
Poirier commented on what her team will have to do to have a shot at winning. “Probably just get out practising more and just put our best effort into it. We’ve played many of the teams before and they were close games. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing and step up our game a bit.”

When you’re struggling with substance abuse or addiction, thinking about change may come in fleeting moments. Maybe an attempt to stop has been made but you are finding it difficult to stay stopped.
“Addiction involves craving for something intensely, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences”
“Withdrawal refers to physical and psychological symptoms experienced when reducing or discontinuing a substance that the
body has become dependent on.”
It can seem like an impossible goal to have a drug-free life and to create a new way of living. But no matter how hopeless your situation seems, change is possible. It can take several attempts to quit before finding out what works to stay stopped.
With the right treatment, support, as-needed medical assistance, and by addressing reasons why you turned to drugs in the first place, the impossible can become the possible. You can recover from addiction and regain a healthy and productive life.
Treatment (i.e. in-patient addiction treatment, medication-assisted treatment such as Suboxone to treat opioid addiction, out-patient counselling, recovery groups etc.) can help teach the necessary skills to cope with cravings, triggers, difficult feelings etc., but can also help you learn how to create a new drug-free way of living.
If you are not quite ready to give up your substance use, NEVER GIVE UP. You can still talk to someone about ways to reduce harm to yourself and/or others and put safe practices in place (e.g. accessing a needle distribution program to prevent contraction and spread of blood-borne infections, safe disposal of needles). You can speak of your apprehension about change and how you can move past this. Just recognizing a problem is a HUGE FIRST STEP.
Please seek out support from others (e.g. doctor, nurse, counsellor, person in recovery, NNADAP, someone you trust, group/program) in order to help you figure out next steps as to what to do to protect yourself and others, and how to ensure your recovery is supported.
HOPE and COURAGE makes CHANGING SUBSTANCE ABUSE POSSIBLE
A message to those struggling with addiction...

In Loving MemoryDoris Cosco
She is GoneYou can shed tears that she is gone,Or you can smile because she lived,You can close your eyes and pray that
she will come back,Or you can open your eyes and
see all that she has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,You can turn your back on
tomorrow and live yesterday,Or you can be happy for
tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she is goneOr you can cherish her memory and let it live on,You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back,Or you can do what she would want;
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.If Flowers grow in heaven,Lord, then pick a bunch for me,Then place them in my mother’s armsand tell her that I love and miss herand when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon
her cheek and hug her for awhile
Lovingly missed by your family
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing
of our father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Henry Legary, on November 28, 2014 at the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. Henry was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba, moving to Northwestern Ontario in the early 1950’s. He started working at Amik Lake with the intent to stay for only a year. He began working at the Zone Hospital in Sioux Lookout, where he worked for 25 years. During this time, he opened Henry’s Grocery, a
small grocery store on Drayton Road, which he operated for a few years. Henry married Cathy (nee dePorto) in 1967. Together, they opened Drayton Cash and Carry in 1974. After they sold the business in 1989, he went about enjoying his retirement. He was a dedicated member of the maintenance committee at St. Andrew’s United Church for a number of years and was a member of the Seniors Centre. He volunteered his time with the Out of the Cold Program in its infancy. He was most proud of supporting local hockey.
Henry will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Donna (Darryl) Bortolot of Lindsay, ON, 5 grandchildren Marsha (Chris) Favot, Adriaan (Lorena) Legary of Sioux Lookout, Toni Legary of Hudson, Mark Bortolot and Sean Bortolot of Lindsay ON and 6 great grandchildren, Kordell, Cortez, Keanan, Adriann Jr, Sophia of Sioux Lookout and Tyson of Hudson, as well as his sister Ada Carter. He was predeceased by his wife Cathy, son Adriaan, as well as 5 sisters and
one brother.
A Memorial Service for Henry was held at St. Andrew’s United Church on Saturday December 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Sioux Lookout with Rev. Warner Bloomfield officiating. Interment of ashes followed at Hillcrest Cemetery.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home, Box 1449, Sioux Lookout, ON P8T 1B9.

it is with heavy hearts, the family of Marnie Hoey announces her passing
on Thursday, December 4. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Denny, her children Denny (Gayle), Greg, Christine (Kevin) her sisters Toni, Helen and Vicki, her brother Jim, grandchildren, Austen,
Harrison and Kristen, and close family friend Benita, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Marnie was born in Virden, Manitoba but grew up in Sioux Lookout. She was the eldest of fi ve children. From her earliest days, her natural talent to take care of others, take charge of situations and take responsibility, was a mantle she wore with ease. As a daughter, she brought joy to her parents, never confl ict. She was never demanding, always giving. She selfl essly kept watch over her younger siblings. She put all of our needs before her own, she would never have said “me fi rst.” She set the “Marnie Standard” for the family that the rest of us tried to live up to.
With her brilliant mind, she completed school early. At
the tender age of 16 she left home to enroll in what was then called Secretarial College. even there, she completed the 1 year course in nine months. And before she was 17 she was working full time and contributing to the family fi nances. She could have mastered any profession but she chose to take the route that would cause the least hardship to her parents and enable her to be self suffi cient the soonest.
And so she set out on her path. it was during these years she met her prince charming (or so it seemed to us). It was only fi tting for the beautiful princess she was to us. She chose someone whose character and strength aligned with her own and together they started their family that was the joy of her life. As a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt
and friend she was tireless in her effort to look after everyone’s needs. She was the consummate hostess. if you were a guest of Marnie’s you always left her home feeling more special than when you arrived. She helped, supported and soothed. But she knew there was more.
Her second family was her community. if there was an organization, she joined it, then led it. if there was a committee, she chaired it.
if there was a fundraiser she not only spearheaded it, she made sure it met its’ target. This kept her busy as her children grew. But she knew there was more.
She started a business of her own in the travel industry. This opened a whole new world to her. Places to go,
people to meet, sights to see. But the biggest thing it brought to her was the world of other business people, leaders and visionaries. She put her heart in to her business and it expanded and grew. But she knew there was more.
She wanted her community to be a better place not just for business, but for everyone. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Blueberry Festival, now a local tradition community highlight. She was one of the driving forces behind the building of the extended Care Facility that has allowed so many local families to keep their aging loved ones close by. But by far, her most prized accomplishment was to be an important part of the team that steered the long
and arduous process that resulted in the completion the Sioux Lookout Meno ya Win Health Centre.
But she knew there was more. There is always more. Marnie was taken from us quickly and unexpectedly. She left us; but to everyone whose life she touched, to everyone who sought her counsel, felt her caring, and benefi ted from her vision, know that you can honor her by doing more and being more.
At Marnie’s sincere request, her funeral will be a private family occasion. She did not ask for much but she asked for this. We will respect her request.
In Lieu of fl owers, donations can be made to the Meno ya Win Health Centre Foundation.

Joining in songThe Sioux Lookout Community Choir presented its annual Festival of Carols celebration December 7 with afternoon and evening performances.
As usual, the presentation of song drew huge crowds, filling Sacred Heart Church with delighted faces. The choir sang many classic carols together, inviting the audience to sing along a few times. Individual choristers broke out of the group for featured carols, and the men’s chorus, ladies chorus, and children’s choir stepped into the spotlight as well.
Festival of Carols was directed by Marlene MacDonald, accompanied by Bonnie Sobchuk and Christine Horst. Horst also directed and accompanied the children’s choir. Jonathan Armstrong joined in with the double bass and Kim Bellingham accompanied with flute.
