Continued from frontyear. It’s not too high, but our concern again is the rate that it’s rising. We’ve been coming up over a foot a week over the last week or so. “It’s not unprecedented, that rate. It’s sort of normal for the spring to pick up quite quickly, but what we want to avoid is going much above that

rate of rise. Certainly the flows we’re seeing into the system right now will support a much faster rate of rise if we don’t increase the flow out the lakes.”

asked what this means for Lost Lake and the MaPB lakes (Minnitaki, abram, Pelican and Botsford) he explained, “Under

normal flow conditions with Lac seul not too high, the levels on the main part of the lake and further upstream are pretty consistent. What we do see when we start seeing these very high inflows, especially in the upper areas around Lost Lake, Pelican, flows start to back up and the level

at Hudson starts to rise. Over the last week we’ve seen Hudson start to rise faster to the gauges on the main lake so we’re not yet at a foot difference but that rate is increasing.

“In the sioux Lookout area we do see water levels rising more quickly than we do on the main lake, Lac seul, and that’s certainly the case this spring.”

DeWolfe clarified water levels on Lost Lake and the MaPB lakes are not particularly high yet, however there is concern over the rate at which water levels are rising.

He said water levels could get much higher in June and July if wet

weather continues.“For the sioux

Lookout area, the level right now is probably at a one in four year high for this time of the year but it’s still several feet below normal summer levels.”

DeWolfe said, “We are looking at a period of dry weather over the next week and if that trend continues there shouldn’t be much of an issue with maintaining levels in June at preferred rates even with the inflows we’re seeing. Things should start to peter out.

“If we get a return to the wet weather we’ve had over the past couple of weeks it becomes more difficult. We can increase the flow out

of Lac seul but there are constrictions in the connecting channels between the lakes in the sioux Lookout area and Lac seul that really back the water up so if you get a lot of water coming in locally, it’s not being transmitted as fast into Lac Seul... We are concerned that the rate of flow into the system is exceptionally high. If we do have dry weather it should come down and be more manageable.”

DeWolfe added, “Looking over the data this morning (May 14), flow in the sturgeon river (one of the main tributaries to the lakes at sioux Lookout) has increased rather dramatically

and continues to rise. The rate of flow is the highest recorded for this date, and it is nearing the all-time maximum recorded rate of flow.”

He advises people to exercise caution around area waterways at this time of year as water can be moving quickly.

Looking back on this past winter, he shared, “the board’s strategy was to, as it does almost every winter, draw the lake down to make room for that snowmelt and rainfall. We met our target day. Nominally the end of winter is april 15 in the board’s

strategy and we were right on target there. Preferably the snowmelt starts around that time of year and we can start to re-fill the lake… to meet our spring targets for fisheries on Lac Seul. May 15 they like to see the level up quite a bit for fishing and navigation interests for the beginning of the season.”

The flow of water coming out of Lac seul is controlled by the ear Falls dam. The Lac Seul generating station is right next to it.

the Lake of the Woods Control Board is

a Canadian board which regulates the water levels of Lake of the Woods and Lac seul, and the flows in the Winnipeg and english rivers downstream of these lakes to their junction, for the benefit of all users and interests.

Saturday morning mystery!!

on arrival at camp yesterday afternoon, I was greeted with a few tidy little piles of animal nuggets in the living room, a mess of candles, books and other items strewn from window sills onto the floor, a bag of dog food ripped open and mostly eaten (tough luck, rosie and Boomer - remember that diet I’ve been threatening you with?), and a fist-size hole through the screen of a window I had left propped open a few inches.

after considerable investigation, I concluded that a marten had gotten in, made itself at home, then frantically tried to get out and finally found the open window, smashed a hole through the screen and jumped six feet to the ground to make its exit.

the unanswered question remained, how did he get in?

at 5 o’clock this

morning rosie woke me up with growling in the living room. Hoping to see my first bear of the year (possibly beside the log outside where he had left the plumpest calling card I’ve ever seen) or maybe a moose passing through the yard, I jumped from bed, slammed my glasses on and rushed out to the front room, sans fruit of the looms, and there was the darnedest thing! a Cat was racing, 100 miles an hour, at least, around the cabin, jumping and leaping from furniture to window sills over, under, around everything, with my two guard dogs in hot pursuit.

after bonking its head on the window that used to be open (I had closed it before going to bed last night to keep the heat in) that cat disappeared somewhere in the direction of the bathroom and the bedrooms at the back of the cabin.

With that, I scratched my head, figured I must

be having some kind of cool dream, possibly inspired by drinking a part bottle of bad wine that had been sitting in the cupboard for the last six weeks, and promptly leaped (not wanting to stand too close to the bed, in case something might reach out and grab me by the leg) back into the sack, pulled a pillow over my eyes, muttered to the dogs, “A cat... strange,” and fell back to sleep.

an hour later I woke

again, stepped as far away and as fast as I could from the bed, visions of my boyhood boogie man nemesis and some wild creature I had dreamed about raging through my foggy brain, grabbed a flashlight, and bravely peered under the bed...

Here’s what I saw. a Cat!!

our cabin is miles from any other building. There’s no road anywhere near. It’s hard to tell from the

little I’ve seen, but this guy looks clean and well cared for. I don’t think it’s a feral cat - it’s really too calm for a wild animal. Its demeanor reminds me more of a pet that’s used to taking shelter from young children when they get too rough.

Whose cat is this, I wonder? How did it get here? should I give it a name? What happens next? should I wear chaps to bed, just in case it tries to claw me?

New high school siteI would like to take

this opportunity to thank all of the individuals who signed the petition against the proposed site on West Point Cove road for the building of the new high school. As stated on the petition we are in favour of building a new high school as this would bring many benefits to students and townspeople alike.

However, we are not in favour of this particular site for all of the following reasons: the area consists of swamp and bedrock and there have been problems with other schools and the hospital being built on similar sites; there is a creek running through the property which would cause disruption/destruction to wildlife

habitat; the area is recreational and several individuals choose to walk, run, bike, snowshoe, ski, skidoo, exercise their dogs, as well as horseback riding, and Cedar Bay also offers wagon rides from the area and holds special events regularly; the road is not constructed to handle increased traffic and would have to be upgraded at taxpayers’ expense; there is not an alternate emergency exit from the area and if one were created it would also require additional taxpayer dollars; there is a boat launch at the end of the road which is very busy for three seasons of the year; the road provides access to two cemeteries where solemn services take place regularly, and the proximity to railroad

tracks and lakes creates a danger hazard. Others have also raised concerns regarding the proximity to a grade school and that the interaction may not always be a positive influence. another concern brought up was regarding the existing skidoo trails that run through the property.

I would also like to respond to questions raised regarding the petition. An individual had written “Alternative?” on the top of one of the pages. This is a very good question which I had contacted the Municipality about and was referred to the Chief administrative Officer on two separate occasions. I received the same response both times, approximately a month apart, which was

that the Municipality had absolutely nothing to do with determining the site of the new high school, was not aware of any proposed sites, and that I would have to consult the Keewatin Patricia District school Board regarding this. I did contact the KPDsB in Kenora and was told I would have to speak with the communications officer in Dryden. After leaving a couple of voicemail messages to return my call, I received a response indicating that the decision regarding location was in the very preliminary stages and that a number of sites were being considered but she could not tell me what they are. It appears that public consultation

is being suppressed, as taxpayers, we should have input regarding the decision.

also, someone had written “not in my Back Yard – NIMBY” on the petition and my response is yes, we do live in the vicinity but the majority of the other 300+ people that signed the petition do not.

I would also like to thank Breann Goodfellow for her letter to the editor and her suggestions regarding a proposed site. This was excellent. If the public were consulted, there may be other creative, proposed sites that could be very suitable and worth consideration.

thank you, to all the supporters.

Carnation DayAs a yearly fund-

raising campaign, the Meno Ya Win Hospital auxiliary members hold an annual Carnation Day.

this year the selling of Carnations in honour of our mothers was held

May 9. In past years colours had a designation, white for a deceased mother, red and pink if they were still with us. as we now have a real variety of colors, the significance is no longer considered.

We raised a total of $1,437.31! Contributions will still be accepted by contacting Donna Prior, our treasurer.

on a very important note, all monies we raise go to the benefit of all patients. At Christmas, with monetary support from the Hudson Hospital auxiliary and the Ladies Legion auxiliary, gifts are purchased wrapped, bagged, and delivered directly to each patient with our personal

Christmas greetings. the smiles, thank yous, and conversation with each patient is so fulfilling – it is a privilege to do the deliveries.

In addition, we only supply items that are of a benefit to patient care. Last year we purchased a large tV and DVD player for the common room, where patients and visitors can enjoy them. In the past we have purchased a birthing

bed, breast pumps, beds, mattresses. We are open to suggestions as to what the patients would require.

thank you again to all our workers and contributors. We always welcome new members to join us. We meet the second tuesday of the month from 12 to 12:45 p.m. in the boardroom across from the cafeteria in the hospital.

Introduction to the Municipal Environment

Committeethe environment

Committee (eC) is a municipal committee and has been in place since 2006.

the purpose of the eC is to provide leadership, education, and action on environmental best practices, with emphasis on identifying local aspects of adaptation to and mitigation of climate

change and to make recommendations to Council on attaining the goal of environmental sustainability for the Municipality of sioux Lookout.

responsibilities of the committee include researching best practices of sustainable environmental policies and practices, and funding sources for all areas of concern; make recommendations to

council concerning related policies, practices, bylaws, and the conducting of environmental audits; provide leadership and education for everyone in the community; sustainable environmental policies; form partnerships with community groups and government agencies; and create sub-committees for specific matters.

Committee members are anne saltel, Chairperson, George Hoggarth, Vice-Chair, Matt Culham, Joyce timpson, council representative, roger Gobbo, Muhktar Kahn, Joanne Peacock and Gerson Agustin, municipal representative.

Meetings are held

monthly at the municipal office and the public is welcome to attend.

over the years the eC has taken on several projects in hopes of bringing awareness to the community on environmental issues that not only affect us locally but also globally. This year the eC will focus on promoting a walkable and bike-able community. Bike racks will be strategically placed in the downtown core in hopes that people will use biking as an active form of transportation when going to/from work and/or shopping.

a trail, walking and biking map will be

developed which will include safe routes and kilometers of each route.

the Community Garden project is in its fourth year of growing local. There are 24 garden beds for growing vegetables. Organizations, individuals and groups can secure a garden bed by contacting Joanne at 737-2292. It is first come, first served and an application form must be completed and include a small fee. orientation, gardening lessons, and assistance are offered to those new to gardening.

The curb-side swap has become quite popular and will continue again this

year. This is where people can leave usable items on the curb for others to take if they want. Items not taken must be removed at the end of the day. This year’s first swap is Saturday, May 24.

other environmental issues the eC will tackle are waste management, education, and awareness on environmental issues.

Until next time, think green and seek new ways to be environmentally friendly.

For more information contact anyone from the EC.

Cause of two-house blaze identified

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

tHe cause of a fire which started in one

home on Drayton road and spread to another, destroying both, has been identified.

sioux Lookout Fire Chief rob Favot said, “the Fire Marshall has conducted their investigation and it’s been ruled as accidental. It looks like it was a combination of cigarette butts and some cardboard or paper.

“It started at 9 autumnwood on the north side of the house on their deck.”

the sioux Lookout Volunteer Fire Department was notified of the blaze by a 911 call which came in from neighbours at 12:30 a.m. on May 12.

Sixteen firefighters were on the scene within minutes.

Favot said both homes were quickly

engulfed in flames. “that’s the way these new homes

are built with vinyl siding and styrofoam behind it.”

some homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. Others were notified they might have to evacuate.

no one was injured in the fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire before a third house could catch flames.

Firefighters battled the fires in the two

single detached residences for four hours.

Firefighters were back on scene later that morning to deal with some hot spots. The fire was declared out that day.

Fundraising efforts

are planned for the spade family who lived at 9 autumnwood and the Zeeman family who lived next door.

a Bannock Burger Fundraiser is being put on by the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre to help the

spade family May 21 at noon.

onYX Dance studio will be holding a Zumbathon Fundraiser for the Zeeman family.

the community has already rallied around both families with donations and aid.

supporter, commented, “I’m a spectator/owner. It was amazing. I’ve gone for three years in a row and it’s a great time. It’s great hockey. Everyone that goes is so pumped to play and they play so hard.”

she continued, “the ladies played really hard. The men… oh my poor husband Jason (Murphy).

He had a great weekend and had some shut-outs. It was amazing. People there were cheering him and the Flyers on. Maybe because we’re Canadian? They were so supportive. It was fun.”

Flyers goalie Jason Murphy added, “It was a good tournament. It always is. This is the third year I’ve gone. It’s always lots of

fun. The team played hard. There was lots of competition and we came up a bit short in the final game and lost 2-1 in a shoot-out.”

He stated, “our team played really hard. We were a little rusty in our first game, but we managed to battle through and the next couple of games we won 8-0. We faced a tough team in the final and it was anybody’s game.”

He said playing in the tournament is something to look forward to for many people in town. “It’s a good time. Such a great facility with eight rinks. There are over 100 teams in the tournament divided into a bunch of different divisions. It’s definitely something we put on the calendars and look forward to going to.”

He praised the women’s hockey team. “the snipers played fantastic. I think they only gave up one goal all weekend.”

He agreed that it’s nice to have his wife

at the tournament. “It’s great. It makes for a great atmosphere. A couple

of the players from the mens team help coach the ladies team. It’s like one

big team playing in two separate tournaments. It was a lot of fun.”
