Welcome to our beautiful city and to the sixteenth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. I think this recent heat wave has gone to my head; I’m crazy from the heat. I can’t seem to concentrate on anything and the only respite is driving around in the car with the air-conditioning on full blast, which is probably about as he-althy as swine flu. The humidity has been so high recently that just the action of bre-athing leaves you dripping in sweat. As the temperatures hit the mid to high thirties you can almost hear the polar icecap crac-king away and melting. Always at around this time of the year my mind plays tricks one me and I have a few ideas. I call these ideas “summer silliness” because most of these are impractical or impossible. Firstly I always get a desire to buy a small boat and sail around the nearby islands. Actually this craving normally lasts for a couple of days before I come to my senses. Apart from the fact that I know absolutely nothing about boats, sailing or in fact the sea, the sheer fact that I get seasick gives me plenty of re-asons not to buy a boat. And the financial burden, it’s like a bottomless well. I was on-ce told by a local that a man is truly happy twice in his life. Firstly when he buys his first boat and secondly when he sells the same boat. I can see the logic in that. Funnily eno-ugh my desire to have a boat quickly disa-ppears in the winter. Another of my “sum-mer silliness” is to grow grapes and produce my own wine. I worked in the wine industry in London for many years and my love of fine wines and their production remains strong. Maybe this idea is not so mad after all, but the simple fact that I don’t have any land would probably prohibit this plan. And even if I filled my entire garden with vines I’d probably only have enough to produce half a bottle of wine, another impractical idea, and another one that fades through the cold winter when I think about all the work involved to look after a vineyard. My summer madness continues with a yearning to sleep. Whether it’s the heat draining my energy or the simple fact that it just feels like the right thing to do in the afternoon I’m not sure. It’s said that Ernest Hemingway spent most of his days sleeping during his twenty year stay on the island of Cuba. And that he wrote “Old man and the sea” and “For who the bell tolls” though the night, I’m guessing it was cooler and he co-uld think. Either that or he was so drunk on cocktails through the day that all he could do was sleep. Yet again, during the shorter winter days this ache goes away.

Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs said last week the number of tourist overnights had declined by six per cent in June compared to the same month in 2008. Bajs added that the number of domestic tourists’ overnights had increased by one per cent in June compared to the same period in 2008. Bajs believes the start of the summer tourist season has been unexpectedly good, Tportal website has reported. Bajs said: “The most-important tourism months are ahead of us. Looking at the numbers, we can be less concerned than our competition. We can cure our problems with an aspirin, honey and tea, whereas other tourism countries need to go in for a serious examination.” In the first six months of 2009, the number of foreign-tou-rist overnights declined by seven percent, while the total number of overnights dropped by three per cent.

Going on holiday to Croatia can save travellers money, according to Jonathan Mitc-ham, principle researcher for Which? Holiday. The consumer campaign group represen-tative said that Britons can find good vacation deals in this country and other nations that do not use the euro currency, due to the current exchange rate. Offering advice on how to secure good-priced holiday deals to places such as Croatia, Mr Mitcham advised people to avoid peak travel seasons like the school-holiday periods. Taking flights at unsociable hours or midweek can also reduce the cost of a trip, he added. “Either book early - especially if booking as a family - or take a gamble and try a last-minute booking if you’re flexible about the type of accommodation you may get,” the expert explained. Croatia’s tourism minister Damir Bajs has suggested this year that late bookings will be crucial to the success of his country’s tourism season in 2009, although he indicated to Reuters that people are staying for longer on their Croatia holidays.

Croatia is one of the holiday destinati-ons that is proving more of an attraction to German vacationers than Tenerife, it has been suggested. According to the tourism councillor at the Spanish island’s popular Arona region, Angel David Herrera, this is having an effect on one of Tenerife’s main markets. Turkey, Egypt and the Caribbean have also proved to be attractive holiday options for people from Germany, the travel expert explained to the Fortnightly Tenerife News. Croatia’s attractiveness for German

tourists was increased recently when it was announced that police officers from Ger-many will be helping local officials patrol the popular Istria region in July and Au-gust. The Earth Times reported that their presence will help visitors who run into di-fficulty during their stay. Anyone staying in Istria accommodation between September 1st and November 30th may also be able to enjoy one of many Truffle Days, which have been organised to celebrate the local delicacy of the area.

Well-known Italian fashion de-signer Giorgio Armani arrived last Sunday in Split. Armani came from Milan in a Net-Jets Air plane. The firm caters to wealthy people in the world of fashion. Armani is repor-tedly planning to cruise along the Dalmatian coast for a few days. The daily 24 sata has reported he said he had always wanted to visit Split. Armani added: “For a long time, I have wanted to see this part of the Adriatic because I have heard so many wonderful stories about it. I just want to enjoy cruising and hope I will also get some new inspiration for my autumn collection.” Armani is planning to visit the islands of Brac, Hvar and Korcula and the cities of Dubrovnik and Cavtat in southern Croatia on his 70-metre-long yacht. After that, he will rest in Sardinia in one of his houses.

People enjoying a villa holiday in Croatia may enjoy travelling by boat to the country’s seaside towns and islands during their stay. Luxury travel blog Paradizo suggested that the “charming port town” of Split is worth a visit, as holidaymakers can explore its “labyrinthine network of cobblestone streets” and Roman walls. The beaches of Korcula, meanwhile, were described as “dreamy”, while the “sparkling island” of Cres is also worth taking in. Last month, Independent writer Frank Partridge wrote that people staying on Cres during their Cro-atia holiday may be able to sport a griffon vulture, as a colony of endangered birds is being protected on the island. He added that “adventurous” holi-daymakers could have a “field day” on a visit to the island, as it has a large freshwater lake and plenty of trails for hikers and bird-watching enthusiasts.

The library ship is sailing along Croatia’s Adriatic coast from 18 to 31 July, stopping in 14 ports. It is the library ship’s third annu-al summer trip. The ship is carrying 2,000 books weighing seven tonnes in the Croatian and some foreign languages. The ship is a cultural-tourism project, the aim of which is to promote a culture of reading and writing, as well as Croatian books and writers. More than 50 writers are on the ship to promote their work. This year, the ship’s godmother is prominent Croatian cook Ana Ugarkovic. The books are on sale at a discount, and ship visitors have a chance to meet their favourite writers. The library ship is considered one of the best cultural-tourism projects in the Adriatic area. Beside bo-oks and writers, the ship will offer special shows, including music, traditional dancing and other performances, at the ports it stops at. The library ship is stopping at Krk, Rabac Cres, Mali Losinj, Rab, Novalja, Povljana , Sali, Sv. Filip, Jakov, Zlarin, Sibenik, Jelsa, Ma-karska and Supetar.

A children’s festival held annually in June and July in Sibenik, Croatia has helped to put the city on the map, according to its mayor. While the 49th annual Sibenik International Children’s Festival concluded earlier this month, mayor Ante Zupanovic com-mented that the event is a “great thing for the city” and he would like to see it last longer than two weeks each year “I’d prefer having it for two or three months,” he told south-eastern European news site SE Times. People planning ahead for a holiday in Croatia next year may wish to consider attending the festival, which this year saw 1,100 participants represent 21 countries over 14 days. Festival performers hailed from as far away as the US, Canada, Austria, Argentina, Macedonia, Serbia and Russia, as well as from Croatia. Sibenik is located in northern Dalmatia and has a population of 41,012.


In the interior of the Sibe-nik- Knin County there are fi-ve towns and fourteen borou-ghs of differing size and with varying populations. Among them lies the Borough of Bilice which is located 3 kilometres from the City of Sibenik. The Borough of Bilice falls among one of the smallest boroughs with only 25,66 kilometres squared which is only 0,86% of the total surface area of the entire county. Since 17.12.2002 Bilice has been an independent and locally governed borough. According to the latest list of

population taken in 2001 Bilice has 662 houses in which 2180 people live. Bilice is situated on the shores of the Prokljan-ska Lake which has a surface area of 11 kilometres squared and a depth of up to 20 me-ters. The region doesn’t have any heavy industry and in fact the area doesn’t even have an industrial park which means that a large area still remains untouched and intact. It is po-ssible to reach Bilice via the sea through the Sibenik Canal under the Sibenik bridge and through a beautiful canyon. Bi-

lice was first mentioned in the 10th century during the rule of Emperor Konstantin Porfiroge-nit. The Emperor mentioned the place called “Belitzein” for which many historians consider that he was talking about the current Bilice. In the St. Josip canal many valuable archaeolo-gical artefacts have been found from the time of the Roman Empire as well as the remains of a Roman Villa. In addition to these finds it is also intere-sting to mention a site that was found in the region, this dry-wall building is considered to

be one of the oldest of its kind in Southern Europe. Historians have calculated that the con-struction is around 900 years old. Experts have come to the conclusion that due to several important factors such as the interior design, ventilation and small windows that the buil-ding was most probably used as storage for grain. The first con-crete mention of Bilice comes from 1298, when the Sibenik region had its first bishop, and Bilice fell into the Žažin parish. It is also a known fact that ma-ny citizens of Bilice took part in

the Spanish civil war. And af-ter World War II many citizens from the region emigrated all over the world because of lack of work or problems with the political situation in the coun-try. Today the whole area is an oasis of natural beauties and well worth a visit if you have a free day during your stay in the Sibenik County. As it is on-ly a short drive from the town of Sibenik and the resorts of Vodice and Solaris you can certainly have a day trip to Bi-lice and you certainly won’t be disappointed.

Burnum or Burnum Municipi-um, an archaeological site, was a Roman Legion camp and town. It is located 2.5 km north of Kista-nje, in inland Dalmatia, Croatia. Burnum is also popularly called Hollow Church (Šuplja Crkva) or Trojan's Town (Trojanov Grad). The remains include a praeto-rium and the foundations of several rooms. Only two of the original five arches have been preserved. The Roman writer Plinius wrote about Burnum, as "fortress distinguished in wars". The Pagana chart from the 16th century presented marked traits of Burnum as the ancient loca-lity, but it did not reach arche-ological interest until the 19th century, when it occupied the attention of renowned Croatian archaeologists, father Lujo Ma-run and father Frane Bulić. The first excavations were conducted by Austrian archeologists. The Roman military camp Burnum was situated on the right banks of the Krka River in the area of the present day village of Ivo-ševci. On the location of “The Empty Church” (Šuplja Crvka) can be seen today the remnants of a port which was part of the

military camp. The camp was most probably constructed 33 years before the birth of Jesus Christ when the XX legion briefly stayed there. After the battle at Akcija, 31 years B.C, the XI legion was stationed at Burnum. Arche-ological excavations carried out in the area of the camp revealed that the camp was built in two phases. In the first, older phase a small part was constructed and then in the second phase the majority of the work was carri-ed out. Building was initiated by the Roman governor for Dalma-tia Publie Kornelius Dolabela. A few recovered written items are evidence on the construction of the camp. One of these items is from 51 years after the birth of Christ and mentions Publie An-teja Rufa, witnesses of the buil-ding of the camp 69 years after the birth of Christ were the XI legion who left the camp and transferred to Vespazijan army in their fight for the emperor. After the XI legion left Burnum the IV legion were stationed there and stayed there from the years 70 to 86. The legions departed when the Dalmatian province became “provincial inermis”.

• Originally you are from Oslo in Norway, how did you end up in Primošten?

In 2006 I was in Croatia on vacation and I started looking for a home outside of Norway. I had already been to Provence in France, Italy and Brussels looking for a pla-ce. In fact I lived for one year in Brussels so maybe that was top of my list until I came to Primošten. Finally I decided on Primošten and in fact it was the last apartment I saw. I just had a gut feeling in my stomach that this was the apartment and the destination for me. I knew that this was the place for me. You know you just have a feeling that this is the right place for you to be, as if your soul is talking to you.

• What do you miss about Norway? It would be much easier to answer this

question with what I like about Croatia. From Norway maybe I miss some traditio-nal food that I enjoyed and sometimes long for. Apart from food I would have to say ski-ing, although you can ski in Croatia, I miss the slopes of Norway. I certainly don’t miss the climate from Norway. Today its 16ºc in Oslo and 25ºc in Primošten, there is really no comparison. I love living close to the sea here and swimming up until October. The climate is really perfect for me. Don’t get me wrong the summers in Norway can be spectacular and when the sun is shining its one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. The problem is that one day can be 30ºc and the next can drop to 14 or 15°c and rainy.

• How often do you go back to Norway? I always go back to Oslo over the Chris-

tmas period. During the year that I’ve been living permanently in Primošten I think that I’ve actually been back four times. I paln on going back in the near future again for a holiday.

• How have you been spending your time in Primošten?

I am spending a lot of my time, in fact most of my days, writing my second book. In fact one of the reasons that I bought a pla-ce here was that it gives me plenty of time and the right environment to write. In the summer time there are a lot of tourists in Primošten so I tend to concentrate more in the winter. I’m writing my second book abo-ut self development in crisis in life. In 2004 a brain tumour was found in my head and after the surgery I was left 75% blind. I was working before with crisis management in Scandinavia with Scandinavian Airlines for some years. Before that I used to work as a chief cabin attendant with the same com-pany.

• You are also a keen photographer? Exactly, I have an exhibition in restaurant

already sold six photos. I’ve been to various photography courses in Norway and in Scilly with famous photographers. My photos are a combination of different things but I try to take photos that provoke feelings in people. I like when people stop and think when they see my photos. I tend to take photos in black and white and I try to focus that the photos tell a story. One world famous photographer from Great Britain once told me that the art of taking a photo is to feel and not to see. To manage to do things that are difficult or as some people say are impossible spurs me on. When a crisis comes into your life I believe that you have more power than you had be-fore, anything is possible. I think that people can do more than they imagine if they really try to work hard and put their minds to it. The photos are from Croatia, Norway and Australia, and I have 16 pictures all together.

• How good is your Croatian?I really don’t speak too much Croatian

unfortunately. I am spending lots of time writing and don’t have time to learn the language. Every day I start writing at nine o’clock and keep writing for at least eight ho-urs. The book is almost ready and hopefully will be published in August or September. I understand that it’s a very difficult langua-ge but I’ve managed to pick up a few of the basics and can understand a little when the locals speak.

• How have you been accepted by the local community in Primošten?

The people of Primošten are wonderful, really superb. I’ve been totally accepted and really feel a part of the local community. I tend to go to one café and the locals have got used to me sitting there and reading my manuscript. My neighbour is great, and al-though she doesn’t speak any English we ha-ve conversations and she brings me special meals that she’s prepared. Truly wonderful people!

• What was a cultural shock for you when you came to live in Croatia?

The shock was that the people were so nice towards me. You could say it was a positive cultural shock. They welcomed me with warm words and open arms. They treated me so nice when I entered the co-mmunity.

• What are your plans for the future? I will go home to Norway on vacation in

the near future, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m hoping to get some more time to do some more photography in the future as I really enjoy that. I’ve been living for one and a half years in Primošten and absolutely I can see myself living here permanently in the future. And maybe I’ll write another book in the future.

Fortress of Knin

Knin was also the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia around 1080 during the rule of King Dmitar Zvonimir. Construction of the fortress begun in 9th cen-tury, at the time of establishing of Old Croatian state. Some Cro-atian Kings had temporary resi-dence in Knin, but King Dmitar Zvonimir resided there perma-nently. Fortress is divided into 5 parts that are interconnected. These are: Donji grad (Lower Town), Srednji grad (Midd-le Town), Gornji grad (Upper Town) or Kaštel Knin, Kaštel lab or Bandijera, and Južni grad (Southern Town) or Belveder station. The fortress is located at 345 m above sea-level and at 100 m above city of Knin. It is 470 m long and 100 wide at the widest part. Defence walls, which surround the fortress from all sides and are almost 2 km long, rise partially up to 20 m. The fortress of Knin is one of the largest Croatian fortification monuments and it is the second military fortification in Europe, extremely indented and pre-served as a whole. It is a living cultural monument, having a museum, exhibition areas and a restaurant and it certainly repre-sents a main brand of cultural tourism at this side of river Krka. This heritage has led to Knin so-metimes being known as the city of Croatian kings or Zvonimir's city (Zvonimirov grad). Between the 10th and the 13th century, Knin was a notable military fort. The huge 10th century medieval fortress on Mt. Spas dominates the centre of town, and its pre-sent aspect dates back to the beginning of the 18th century.

It is one of the largest fortifica-tion buildings in Dalmatia and is divided into the upper, medium and lower town, connected by drawbridges. Its strategic posi-tion played an important role in many wars and power changes — beginning with the Croatian rulers, then Kingdom of Hun-gary, the Venetians, Turks, to the Austrians and the French. On May 29, 1522, the fort of Knin fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Croatian folk massively left the town. The town was populated with Serb refugees by the Otto-mans. Century and a half later, on September 11, 1688, it was captured by the Venetian Repu-blic. Subsequently, the Croatian population partially returned and the Franciscans built a mo-nastery and a church there in 1708. Knin passed on to the Ha-bsburgs together with Dalmatia in 1797 according to the Treaty of Campoformio. After the Peace of Pressburg in 1805, the Fren-ch Empire gained the city and incorporated it into the Illyrian Provinces in 1809. By 1813, the Austrians regained the control over the town. By the end of the 19th century, as a part of the Habsburg domain of Dalmatia, Knin grew steadily becoming an important commercial as well as the road and railway center. In 1867, Knin became a part of Dalmatia - a territorial entity within Cisleithania. After the First World War Knin became a part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs in 1918, which subsequently became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugosla-via since 1929).

“Zvonimirovi dani” are devoted to King Zvonimir and shall take place on June 27th, 28th and 29th at the fortress of Knin. The whole manifestation shall be arranged in an 11th century style and the visitors should feel as if they stepped back into Zvonimir's period as soon as they enter into the fortress. King Zvonimir and his wife and Queen Helen the Beautiful, as well as the King’s soldiers shall be present at the fortress and all meals are prepared

and served according to recipes from that ancient pe-riod. Also, an art colony on the topic of King Zvonimir and fortress of Knin shall be organised, as well as poets and a literary gathering on the same topic. The main goals of this project are to make the fortress of Knin more at-tractive to visitors and inhabitants of city of Knin itself, to introduce them to history, tradition and cultural heritage of royal town of Knin.

The Sibenik – Knin County is full of interesting sights and sounds. Its history and tradition are rich, complicated and fascinating. Its nature and wildlife, in-cluding two national parks, are unique and breathtaking. Its cuisine and wine are world class. The connection to the sea

is unbreakable. And finally its people are friendly, ge-

nerous and warm. Every week we’ll bring you a few short fact files of different areas of life in the county so that you can better comprehend the culture that surrounds you.

Vodice is a town in the Šibenik-Knin co-unty, Croatia. It borders the Adriatic Sea and has a population of 9,407. Vodice is a popular tourist destination in Croatia, wi-th most of the population oriented towar-ds providing accommodation for visitors in the city’s hotels, motels, and pensions. Vodice was first mentioned in 1402 altho-ugh it was founded already in the Roman

times as Arausa. Its name derives from the word meaning water sources which su-pplied the whole area. The defense walls from the times of the Turks with the Coric tower testify the past times. Other similar monuments are St. Cross’ church on the former graveyard, built in 1421 and the parish church in the town centre built in 1746.

Through the years, the Šibenik Button decorated the male national costume, a throughout the last few decades it has been recognized as an original souvenir of Šibenik. Today, the Šibenik Button can be bought in the form of earnings, rings, charms, tie pins, broaches, necklaces and other similar items. The Button has the form of two half spheres connected in the middle and hollow inside. The outer part is decorated with thin silver threads and balls. The original Button was made out

of silver, with an exact size; however, to-day you can find it made out of gold and aluminum and in various sizes. The Ši-benik Button, and an authentic souvenir was made by the famous filigree Ljazer Čivjak according to the ideas of the desi-gner Franka Baranović. In 2007, the Šibe-nik Button was named the most original Croatian souvenir by the Croatian Tourist Board. Today the Šibenik Button is a com-ponent of the costumes of Šibenik Klapas (a cappella groups).

Šibenik is the town with the greatest number of church-organs in Croatia. The-re are six old and four modern organs in the very town of Šibenik and nine more in the Šibenik County. In 1993, a group of enthusiasts, knowing above mentioned facts, established the Organ Summer Sc-hool in Šibenik. The Organ Summer Sc-hool courses consist of lectures where the organ players and music teachers enrich their knowledge and experience. A lot of

research on church music has also been done so far. The courses are held every year from August 17th through 31st. Besides the courses many organ music concerts are also held during that peri-od. The participants of the organ school also take care about the restoration and permanent maintenance of the twelve or-gans from this region. All the activities are financed by the Church authorities, the local and County authorities...

“Dalmatian Chanson Evenings” is a festival of the authentic Dalmatian song that has been held in Šibenik since 1998. It presents the original Dalmatian song which does not give up the pop-song but has an inclination to the chanson - a song whose most important expressi-on is a verse.The performers are usually also the authors of music and lyrics and they know how to adjust the words to the melody and how to create special atmosphere. “Dalmatian Chanson” is a recently made project in order to cele-brate the 700th anniversary of Šibenik diocese and the date when Šibenik was officially named town.1998 was the year in which Šibenik celebrated many jubi-

lees: The Šibenik Brass Band observed the 150th anniversary, The City Choir “Kolo” celebrated the 100th anniver-sary, the oldest Croatian children’s choir “Zdravo maleni” celebrated 40th anniversary, the male voice choir “St. Michael” observed the 25th anniversary.The evenings of the Dalmatian Chanson, established in that jubilee year, will cer-tainly confirm the centuries old Šibenik singing tradition. Šibenik is known as the cradle of culture, art, science and particularly Dalmatian song. By this fe-stival it proves the status of being the source of the authentic Dalmatian song - the fact Šibenik has been proud of for centuries.
