** Poem by Leigh Hunt (1784 - 1859)
Finding Hereward
January is a turning-point but also a frozen low point of the year for me. It is a time of looking backwards and forwards, a time to remember the year’s cycle. The year bites its own tail. We reflect on who we have been and who we become. How pleasant to remember the balmy days of summer. But one day last summer, there was for Chris and I a profound looking back and completing of time. Chris and I were in the second week of our holiday, and on the north Norfolk coast. We decided to visit Cley. This took us through Blakeney where Chris spotted the local village church which looked interesting. It had two towers, but, why, we wondered. We decided to stop and get better acquainted with it on the way back along the coast nearer to tea-time. We had to park in a side road – the main road was too narrow – and so stopped by the village school. This meant that we had to go into the churchyard by the side path. How glad I am that we did! I rather loitered up the path and read the names on tomb stones. How interesting it is to see what the local names are! By the church porch was a small ashes plot where I stopped and browsed a little. Then, suddenly it was as if my whole stomach had been turned over with a mixture of grief and delight. I called Chris back. There, written on a stone near to the path were the words: Hereward Roger Gresham Cooke, 1939-2009 Priest and Sailor. It was Ned. He had been a good friend to Chris and me as we were getting married, and was senior curate in my home parish. When I worked for the parish, a full year before the wedding, Ned had let me use his house and kitchen as a stop-off point and refuge. He had been a good friend and guide. The last time I saw him was three years before he died. I did not know where he was interred. But now, Here! Ned had died in 2009. He had cycled for Christian Aid from Norwich to Copenhagen!! He ate a good meal with his companions. They found him dead in his bed the next morning. Ned had lived that others might live well. He had been both an industrial chaplain in Norwich, as well as Deputy Leader of Norwich City Council. Above all, like Abou Ben Adhem**, he was one who loved his fellows. Thus he loved God. The memory hit me with tears and joy. But there was above all a strange connectedness. I do not mean in a spooky way, but just in the sense that in God we are one, even through the veil of death. It is a privilege that God gives us that we might write our love across the sky, and be hidden and revealed. Richard ( Richard Worsley is a member of the Bredon Hill Group Clergy Team)

Seminar by John Bell from the Iona Community on April 1st Looking for the larger Christ.”
The adjectives most commonly used regarding Jesus are 'kind and gentle'; the predominant images of him in the song and physical artwork of the church are mostly passive, and there is limited expectation that he might have an interest in the issues of the day apart from those associated with charitable causes. So is he the Lord of All or an emasculated saviour? This will be the focus of the seminar which will draw on scripture, poetry and song, all in search of a larger Christ.”
See page 12 for an update on purchasing tickets for the seminar to be held in Beckford Church
Taizé Services in 2017
Following the successful Taizé service held in Beckford Church last September, we are going to hold three similar services in the Bredon Group during 2017. The dates and venues are: February 19th: 6:00pm at Teddington Church July 9th: 6:00pm at Beckford Church September 9th: 6:00pm at Bredon’s Norton Please put these dates in your diaries. We look forward to seeing you, especially if you have never been to this type of service before. The service is very easy to follow and consists of prayer, readings, singing in the form of chants and some short periods of silence.
Looking forward to Lent…….
This year we will once again be keeping Lent with our friends from around Bredon Hill. We will be using it as an opportunity to prepare for our Group Day on 29th April which will be led by Canon Dr Jill Hopkinson who is the Church of England National Rural Officer.
The Lent Course will follow the structure from this year's York Course entitled 'Receiving Christ.' The Course is jointly written by The Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, Margaret Sentamu, Revd Dr Ken Howcroft, former President of Methodist Conference, Theodora Hawksley, RC Theologian. We our very fortunate that Dr Howcroft has agreed to lead our two plenary sessions which will be on 15th March, at Elmley Castle and 2nd April at Bredon. We will once again need people who are willing to be Group Leaders. There will be a Training Morning for them in the Bredon Church Rooms on Saturday 11th February.

Despite a bitter evening, a very large crowd gathered to see the
Bonfire lit by Gregory Rose, the winner of the Guy Competition, with his lifelike effigy of Donald Trump. Once the flames had
consumed Mr Trump, to cheers mainly from the children, the
firework display took over and provided a stunning display as
usual, rewarded with an appreciative round of applause from the
spectators. Refreshments were provided by the Friends of Overbury School and they reported having almost sold out.
The voluntary donation buckets raised a record total of over £1500 in aid
of the Village Hall Improvement Fund. This popular annual event would not be
possible without the generous support of Bruce Bossom.

plant sales.
The Grand Total raised by the 2016 Street Market was therefore a record £4752.
Date for your Diary: The 2017 Street Market will be held on Saturday 8th July.

CHRISTMAS BULB SALE at Overbury in December
Thank you to all who made this such a happy and successful event, which made over £900 for the Friends of St Faith’s. Of
course, though, the REAL thanks are due to Dagny
Holland-Martin and Michael Randles without whose
planning and hard work there would have been no sale.
And apologies to anybody who came a little later in the morning only to discover that all the bulbs had already gone - the organisers were astonished by how quickly
everything sold!
Message from Hilary Collins of Conderton
I would like to thank all the local residents who so kindly organised a party, sent me cards on the occasion of my
birthday. My wife, Cy, and I moved into Conderton 20 years ago
– but regretfully Cy is no longer here.

Overbury School Report Cinderella Rockafella It’s behind you…Pantomime season was upon us and we loved every minute of it: For one night only, the artist formerly known as Prince Charming, was appearing in town before hanging up his performing hat and returning to royal life, and poor Cinders didn’t have a ticket for the after show party. Cue an array of typical panto confusion, a quartet of trainee fairies, a bad fairy, various animals and who could forget the ugly sisters. The children performed beautifully, remembering their lines and acting with such confidence. The variety of songs perfectly demonstrated the hard work and hours of rehearsals that had gone into such a performance. A huge well done to everyone involved and a special thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket or donated money; we raised a festive £85.78 for Cheltenham Open Doors Christmas Shelter. Upcoming Events 13th JANUARY: Bring & Buy Toy Sale The perfect opportunity to clear out unused old toys, that your children/grandchildren have grown out of, to make way for the new ones received at Christmas. This is an event run by Sundial Class and is thoroughly enjoyed by every year group. Any toy donations would be gratefully received. 15th JANUARY: Deadline for September 2017 Admissions County Councils are very strict with their admission deadlines, so please ensure your options are registered before this date. Any applications received after 15th January will be classed as late. Places are then offered at whichever school has space, after the other applicants have been allocated places. 6th – 10th FEBRUARY: Foodbank Week Throughout the week please donate tinned and dried food, sanitary products and toiletries for those less fortunate and we will take these to Tewkesbury food bank.
WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A CLERK TO THE GOVERNORS.
THIS IS PART TIME, PAID WORK.
PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE FOR FURTHER DETAILS
If you would like any more information on any of these events, please do not hesitate to contact the school office on 01386 725235 or email [email protected]
OUR SPACIOUS SCHOOL HALL IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE HIRE.
A SAD FAREWELL– AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE! The governors of Overbury CE First School are very sorry to announce that our long serving head teacher, Pernilla Pascolutti, will be retiring in April. Her departure after eleven years in the post, during which time she has overseen the major building programme that has transformed the school’s facilities and guided us through two successful Ofsted inspections, will leave us with a big hole to fill and she will be much missed. We are now looking for a new head to lead us into the future and warmly invite anybody interested to contact the school for an application pack: [email protected] - telephone 01386 725235. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 18th January. Do please spread the word! Susan Renshaw, Chair of Governors

Collections in December went to the Children’s Society from our Christingle service and to the Evesham based charity, Caring Hands in the Vale, from the Ashton Celebration of Christmas. £385 was raised for Caring Hands.
Ashton Christmas Fair Result
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to the Christmas Fair held in the village hall in Ashton on 19th November last year. The final total raised was £2,200. The proceeds were shared between St Barbara’s Church fabric fund and St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester. Some of the donations qualified for Gift Aided tax refund, which increased the funds further.

ASHTON UNDER HILL W.I. - December Report
Ashton WI have enjoyed a very interesting walk around the Battlefield of Evesham with Tony Spicer our guide. On a rather grey November morning sixteen members and husbands met under the Bell Tower to begin the ‘de Montfort’ trail, a walk and talk booked by Jen Creese. Fortunately the rain held off all morning and the weather even improved slightly for us. A former bell tower was the site where a look-out for Simon de Montfort saw troops advancing from the north, so it was a good place to start.
We walked up to the top of Greenhill commenting that we rarely walk through parts of our own town. There is a splendid view over to Bredon Hill to the west just over the crest of the hill and again to the east looking over the river and the A46. It is amazing to imagine that somewhere near here is the site of a fierce and bloody battle which is so significant in our history. The geography of the area is very important in the battle. There is a former island or “ait” in the river
which would have been the crossing over towards the Cotswolds and the old route to London, now mostly disappeared. Tony was incredibly knowledgeable and led us through the background history as well as the battle itself. In 1265 although Simon actually held the king hostage, his son Prince Edward had escaped and had rallied troops in Worcester. Mortimer, who was a strong supporter of the king, marched from the west and the troops which Simon thought belonged to his own son and supporters (who had in fact been defeated at Kenilworth) were marching under false colours. These were the troops spotted from the belltower. The army led by De Montfort was out-numbered and the men could not retreat because they were confined by the loop of the River Avon. It seems as though some of his support had drifted away and at the end of a very bloody battle Simon was hacked to death. Despite his terrible end there were already the early indications of change in government with councils and even a parliament being held. So one could even say that the beginning of democracy in our country happened right here. Many thanks to Jen for organising the talk for us and to Tony our guide who provided a very interesting morning. We were inspired to plan to explore some of the area again but probably in warmer days! The next walk will probably be in January around the Kemerton lakes, to be confirmed. It may already seem a long time after Christmas and well into a cold New Year when you are reading this. On 6th December Ashton under Hill W.I. enjoyed sampling a different venue for our Christmas meal, which happens instead of our usual meeting. This time we went to “The Teddington Hands” which provided a lovely area of the pub for us decorated in festive style. There was an excellent choice of menu and full marks to the staff who served thirty-four ladies with a smile. The portions were very generous, but some of us cleared our plates. We always do a free raffle and there were seasonal prizes to be won. We all spent a very enjoyable evening as a start to Christmas. Earlier in the autumn seven members from Ashton had joined the Worcester Federation shopping trip to Bristol on 17th November. We were glad of a local pick-up in Pershore, one of three coaches going from the county. The shopping centre in Bristol is at Cabot Circus, and has some very smart big name shops in a well designed area. We tried out Harvey Nichols, House of Frazer, M&S, Next and Debenhams as well as the smaller shops. We kept coming across Worcestershire ladies with bulging carrier bags! There were plenty of places for lunch and refreshments and we rural types enjoyed the chance to visit a bigger centre. The rather wintry weather and rain meant that we didn’t linger in the German style market but it looked very attractive for future reference. The verdict was ‘a good day out’ and we look forward to seeing where the outing will be for next year. Our first meeting of the New Year will be at 7:30pm in the Village Hall on Tuesday 3rd January when the topic will be a demonstration of “How to make Pork Pies” with Rose Stubbs. All welcome. Judith Hunter, Secretary

Alstone Carol Singing
Alstone’s carol singers (with support from Ashton, Dixton, Prestbury and Teddington)
set out on the surprisingly mild evening of 9th December to sing carols round the
village. Thanks are due to all who carolled and helped us give
our now seasonal donation to the Children’s Society. An
especial thank you to Phil and Jan Davis, who supplied mulled
wine and mince pies on the way, and to Joan and John
Perkins, who revived the choristers afterwards at their home
with refreshments and good cheer. It was a very enjoyable and
successful evening and we collected £190, the highest amount
to date, for this worthy charity.
Our performance was at one point relayed internationally – via Skype to New Zealand!
We wish all our readers a Very Happy New Year
Volunteer Verge Grass Cutters Needed for Outside St Nicholas Church, Teddington
I would like to express my thanks to the following for their sterling work in keeping the verge outside of St Nicholas nice and tidy. They are: Mike Wignall, Ken Howell, Paul Noke, Bob Thomson, Jonathan Jolyon, David Longney, David Marsh, Robin Godfrey and Paddy Edwards (reserve). I’d also like to thank our Parish Council for kindly funding a brown bin to allow us to dispose of the cuttings. If those generous community spirited folk would like to continue then they need do NOTHING and I’ll draw up a draft rota for 2017 and run it by them. We do have vacancies for probably TWO more people and this would then mean each person would cut the verge grass only once a year. Bit of background: Many people think the verge outside of St Nicholas church Teddington belongs to the church. It doesn’t, it belongs to the Highways Authority (as best as I can ascertain). Before 2016 the verge grass cutting was undertaken by just two public spirited locals who live in Church Lane. So if you would like to be added or taken off the rota then please email, text or phone me. Many thanks,
The first meeting of 2017 for Teddington and Alstone Parish Council will be on Tuesday 17th January at 7.30 in the Village Hall.
Do come along. It's a good way of keeping in touch with what's going on in your neighbourhood.
Teddington Quiz Night Once again the village hall was packed and bustling. Through everyone's generosity in both providing raffle prizes and trying to win them back we raised £395. This year the money was sent to "The Butterfly Garden", a small local charity, on Bamfurlong lane, Cheltenham. When 6 young autistic students visited a commercial Nursery and Garden centre seeking gardening advice, they unwittingly became the pioneer
founders of "The Butterfly Garden". That was in 2002. Now the garden extends over 4 acres. Over 100 students attend each week. It has evolved beyond just gardening. The provision is diverse and stimulating. Volunteers support art, music, woodwork and catering as well as gardening. Please take a look on-line at this small worthy cause.
www.thebutterflygarden.org We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone for regularly supporting our quiz and for being so generous. Anne & Phil Clark I would like to add thanks to Anne and Phil for organising the Village Quiz and refreshments every year. It is always a resounding success and a good time is had by all. Chris Godfrey
VALE WILDLIFE HOSPITAL APPEAL
The staff at the hospital are currently caring for almost 300
hedgehogs, along with other animal casualties. The staff are in
urgent need of old newspapers to use as bedding material for
these animals, so can you can help by taking yours along to the
hospital?
If you have some old newspapers, but are unable to get to the centre yourself, please
let me know and I will arrange to collect them from you: Brian W Foreman,
April Cottage,Walnut Court (off Walnut Bank Drive), Teddington - Tel: 01242 620898
From the Beckford Registers: 25th November: Mrs Doreen Harris of Beckford - (interment of ashes) 7th December: Mrs Ruth Taylor of Little Beckford - (funeral service followed by cremation) 23rd December: Mrs Irene Christopher, formerly of Little Beckford - (interment of ashes) John Bell Seminar: Beckford Church 1st April 2017 Over the past couple of months we have been advertising this very special event, to be held in Beckford on 1st April from 2pm-5pm. Whilst tickets have sold well locally, there has been a considerable surge in demand since it was advertised on the Diocesan website and already we have sold more than half of the available tickets and ongoing demand is steady. Clearly we have a limited capacity in the church and we are anxious that local people who wish to attend shouldn't be excluded. April may seem a long way away at the moment but – if you wish to join us for what promises to be an out-standing afternoon – do buy your tickets as soon as possible: while stocks last! To recap: tickets cost £15 (including refreshments) and are available from Beckford Stores. Anyone wishing to have their tickets posted should email Matthew on [email protected] with details of the number required and the address to which they should be sent. He will then advise how payment may be made. Beckford Coffee Morning – Friday 27th January
Do come and join us for our first Coffee Morning of the New Year when we gather in St John's church between 10.30am and 12 noon. The formula remains the same: coffee or tea – and homemade cake – for £2 (to support church funds) with free beverage refills. A warm welcome is guaranteed as is the opportunity to socialize with friends from this village and from further afield.
The church in Beckford hopes to hold a community fund-raising event each summer. In 2016 it was Beckford Open Village, and the plan is to repeat this in 2018. For 2017 we are planning a novel event - a 'Run Around Supper', on Saturday June 10th. Various homes around the village will host a starter or a main course, and everyone will end up
at the Village Hall for dessert. There will be a charge - probably of £20 - per head for those wishing to take part. This promises to be a highly enjoyable community occasion. If you would like to host any of the courses, or to help in any way, please contact Heather Neale ([email protected], Tel. 0781 3399728), or any member of the church committee.
BECKFORD W.I. - December Report Our President Yo Yates welcomed 22 members to the Christmas meeting of Beckford WI on 12th December. The main event since the last meeting which had involved all the members had been the Christmas Fayre. This had been very successful and everyone who had taken part felt that it was an excellent start to the seasonal festivities. Ten members attended the Group Carol Service at St Giles’ Church at Bredon and enjoyed the readings, carols and refreshments afterwards. It was good to join with WI members from other villages. Some members also attended the Gloucestershire Federation Carol Concert at Cheltenham Town Hall where the guest singer was Laura Wright. Since the AGM at the last meeting the committee had met and the various roles allocated to members of the committee. A new member was welcomed to the committee and the programme of meetings for 2017 has been printed. It is very varied and ranges from talks about tea, pearls and chocolate to an opportunity to create some poetry and see a demonstration of jewellery making. There will be an auction and a talk about stress management as well as a talk about the Air Ambulance Service in the local area. An interesting visit to BBC Bristol studios is being organised for February and other outings are planned. The Bookworms Book Club meets again in January. The last book to be discussed was “The Year of Wonder” which was a novel about the Great Plague. The first book of the new programme is to be “The Diary of a Provincial Lady” by E.M.Delafield which is quite a contrast.
Yo then introduced Margaret Darby who demonstrated some festive sugarcraft. Members watched Margaret produce some models of snowmen and penguins using fondant icing. She showed us how to embellish them with accessories made from coloured icing, which could be moulded into hats, scarves, earmuffs as well as eyes and noses to complete the picture. She gave us a selection of cupcakes which members could decorate using the demonstrated techniques. Much fun
was had producing snowmen and penguins along with extras such as snowballs and presents. There was also the opportunity to paint some designs that Margaret had made using a variety of coloured edible paints. She had thoughtfully provided small cake boxes for us to take home our trophies. Yo thanked Margaret for her helpful demonstration and her thoughtful provision of everything needed to make the items. Then we enjoyed a Christmas buffet meal with food provided by all the members. The next meeting is on Monday 9th January at 7.30pm entitled “A Girl Guiding trip to Namibia” given by Nettie Mantle which will be illustrated by slides. All are most welcome.
Clare Henderson, Meeting Secretary
Beckford Community Village Hall The committee held its normal monthly meeting on November 28th. Having now agreed a price, we are going ahead with making a new notice board, which will be dedicated to the late Phil Smith.
An application is going in to the Parish Council for a contribution of, hopefully, £10,000 towards the estimated cost of £30,000 for the initial refurbishment which is planned to begin in the spring. More fundraising will be needed in the future, and each user group of the hall is being asked to organise some kind of event as a contribution. The Doctor's Surgery will be leaving at the end of December, and we are looking for alternative uses for the facilities and income to replace that lost. We have consulted the Tennis Club and are awating their response before exploring other possibilities. Six moles have recently been caught on the fields. The moleman from Overbury Estate is fairly confident that there are no more left! This was the last meeting of 2016. We are, as always, seeking some new active members of the committee, and hope that 2017 will see them begin to appear on the scene!

For fans of The Archers - the following information was provided by Judith Hunter of Ashton W.I.
‘It was definitely confirmed to us that Ashton under Hill was one of the inspirations for the fictional villages in the series. The speaker at the WI lunch in October was Jo Toye, one of the current script writers and she mentioned that Godfrey Bazeley, the originator, did base the stories loosely on Hanbury and Inkberrow villages, as we know, but did love coming to Ashton. Any co-incidence with our own well known local families? I always thought there was no connection, but there apparently is. What fun!’
Overbury Bowling Club (www.overburybowling.net), established in 1962 on the Overbury Estate is located on the edge of Overbury village and benefits from a 6 rink county standard bowls green. The magnificent views of the Cotswolds from the club and the tranquil surroundings of Overbury village are widely acknowledged and are the envy of visiting bowls clubs. The club competes in the Worcestershire Concorde and the South Worcestershire Triples leagues with some of the club's bowlers also competing in the Worcestershire County Championships. A number of non-league matches are played against Gloucestershire clubs which, whilst still being played to win, are always enjoyed in a friendly and sociable way. With the 2016 outdoor season just closed, Overbury Bowling Club celebrated another successful year. From hosting and winning the 2016 South Worcestershire Gala Triples Day, where 10 teams from 5 clubs were in competition, through winning second place in the South Worcestershire Triples league, to a ladies triples team reaching the semi-final of the Worcestershire County Championships, winning through 3 previous rounds and only losing to the eventual champions, Overbury Bowling club members have had a very good year. Our club chairman, Dan Mason, said "This has been a great year for Overbury Bowling Club. In each case, these are the best results we’ve had for several years, but of course we shall be doing our best to win all three in 2017!”
During the year, club competitions are held to determine the ladies’ and men’s champions in various divisions, in addition to 'fun days' which form part of an active social program. After the club's 'finals day', the trophies were presented to the champions by the club president, Penelope Bossom of the Overbury Estate. During the close season, Overbury Bowling Club has a number of teams competing in the indoor leagues at Littleton. In the Open Triples
league last winter, one Overbury team finished in second place and are looking to go one better again in this coming winter league. Dan Mason, who captained the team in last year’s winter league, said “Many of our members enjoy playing indoors during the winter, and particularly in the very competitive leagues at Littleton. For an Overbury team to finish second last year was more than we had hoped for at the start of the season, but having learned from our experiences last year, we plan do even better this time around.” New members are always welcome and all ages, both young and senior, can enjoy this very social sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly. For more information, contact Overbury Bowling Club at [email protected].

The Carrant Catchment Area Restoration Project (CCARP) Last year Kemerton Conservation Trust began to investigate the possibility of local farmers and others collaborating at landscape scale for the benefit of the local environment. Such was the positive response by most that I had to admit that I was no longer fit enough to organise such a big project. I took the idea to English Nature (EN). Potentially we were looking at both the Worcestershire and Gloucestershire sides of the catchment – plus the rivers Isbourne and Washbourne – and with 20-50 members. EN representatives were keen for us to apply for public funding to enlist the help of a ‘Facilitator’ – or Project Manager. Jenny Phelps has worked for the Farming and Wildlife Group – or FWAG – for many years. She has experience in farming and a pretty good knowledge of wildlife and could work for us part-time via FWAG. Perfect! We have now received enough funding to pay Jenny – plus a bit for contractors. After meeting the original members Jenny has been planning the way ahead. And we have partners. The Environment Agency has already started work and we have begun trials, funded by Worcestershire County Council, to improve the flora along our local road verges. Avonbank Nurseries at Pershore College is growing apparently disease-resistant Elm trees and will try Whitebeam. The charities Buglife and LEAF (linking the environment and farming) are keen to work with us. Three students are carrying out various research projects on farmland. Local wildlife experts have offered to help. We have our first sponsor too – Cotswold Agricultural Merchants has offered support for five years. We have also designed and printed a leaflet outlining our plans. If any farmers want to find out more please contact me. If you feel that you have a skill or expertise that would help us please do get in touch.
On 14th December Jenny organised the official launch of the CCARP. After her presentation, there was a discussion which continued as existing and new members, other farmers, local village and council groups spoke enthusiastically about the project. Later we all enjoyed local food from the buffet and there was a great deal of ‘meeting and greeting’ as the discussions continued for another hour or so. All-in-all, a very positive start to the project.
