The Fall 2014-2015 academic year has begun at Shorter College, the nation’s only private two-year historically black institution! The energy on campus is bustling with new students, new faculty, new staff, new services and new technologies making Shorter College an exciting place to pursue your academic and career goals.

The 2014-2015 school year began with Student Orientation on August 18-19. All students were required to attend orientation to receive important information pertaining to class scheduling, student services, College ID’s, technologies and other important documents in order to be a successful Shorter College student. Bishop Samuel L. Green, Presiding Bishop of the 12th Episcopal District of the A. M. E. Church and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, addressed the student body on how important it is to succeed academically. He was followed by the College President, Dr. O. Jerome Green who followed in the same regard stating, “You are special because you are here! You have made the decision to make happen what others may have thought was the impossible.”

We are excited about the new developments that are happening on campus and in our community, especially the re-opening of the S. S. Morris Student Center.

The recently renovated Student Center is the central place of student activity on campus. Students are encouraged to interact both socially and academically in the comfort of a lounge area, recreation, and other amenities. The dinning facility of the Morris Student Center is scheduled for completion in the very near future.

The Shorter College student body has high energy and is looking forward to the upcoming year. The instruc-tors are enthused and ready to provide students with academic excellence. We anticipate new developments that are happening on campus and in our community.

The Shorter College family congratulates Mr. Harrison Johnson, Shorter College Registrar, for receiving his Master of Science degree in Agriculture Education from Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia, AR on Friday, August 8, 2014. This was second Master’s level degree. Johnson plans to begin a doctoral degree program this coming fall. Congratulations!

Faculty Corner by Kanetra Fitzpatrick

the SHORTER REPORTER

Greetings Shorter College! This week marks the official return for the Fall 2014 semester. For new and returning students, Welcome! Shorter has gone through some changes in 2014 even during the summer months. In June, the Faculty Corner made its first appearance in The Shorter Reporter. The Shorter Faculty has accepted the task of contributing a weekly segment for your reading pleasure. In this segment you will hear from and get to know members of the faculty.

“The Mission of Shorter College is to provide accessible, affordable and high quality education for students to accomplish their academic and career goals by offering programs that meet the learner’s needs in a challenging and nurturing Christian environment.” This column will serve as a resource for additional information that we, the faculty, think you should know. This effort is to help “you FIT here” and anywhere else you decide to plant seeds of success. We also want to hear from you! Let us know your questions, concerns or ideas for topics for this column. Email me at: [email protected].

This year’s series of Weekly Chapel Services is set to begin on Wednesday, August 27th at 11:00am in the Belin HealthPlex Gymnasium. These inspirational services feature dynamic speakers and preachers who will expound on the Four C’s of Shorter College: Competency, Character, Citizenship and Culture. Attendance at Weekly Chapel Service is mandatory for all enrolled students. If you cannot attend, you must contact the Office of Academic Affairs to make arrangements to supplement Chapel.

This week’s Chapel speaker is Reverned D. Lavel Crawford, Sr. His prophetic preaching touches the human condition to challenge the hearer to believe God is able. He is the husband to Stephanie and the father of six children, Dana, Jr., Tangier, Christin, Chelsea, Morgan and Jessica. Born in Ocala, Florida in a generation which felt the struggle for civil rights, yet understands the struggle of a new generation, he attended Central Florida Community College and then Florida A&M University, where he majored in music and was a member of FAMU’s famous ‘Marching 100’.

Raised in a family with a history in African Methodism, D. Lavel Crawford, Sr., received Christ and accepted the call to preach in February 1992. Having been baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit; and with the guidance of his Father in Ministry and mentor, Bishop Samuel L. Green, Sr., Rev. Crawford served for five years as associate minister and Director of Evangelism and Membership at St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Orlando, FL.

Humbled by the opportunity, Rev. Crawford gratefully accepted the transfer and appointment to serve as Senior Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Little Rock, AR in October 2010. Reverend Crawford’s vision for Bethel is to “Equip and Empower People for Victorious Living.” Rev. Crawford holds that, “as long as there is breath in your body, there is hope for your soul.” Shorter College welcomes Rev. Crawford and looks forward to an uplifting and motivating experience!
