1 From the study – A part of our (nearly) daily routine is to walk our dog, Abby, in the park. In fact, when we get up each morning she does her best to remind us that, “it’s time to go!” So, sometimes even before we’ve finished the first cup of coffee, we get in the car to go to the park. As much as possible, Janet and I try to walk together – some days that works better than others. What we’ve come to discover is that, although each day we walk nearly the same path, yet somehow each new day the park seems different from the day before. We’ve walked in the rain and through the snow, on sunny and even cloudy days. Each day we’re greeted by the birds singing, in season the frogs croaking, the wild flowers spreading their own beauty, and even the deer meandering through the woods. To be honest, there are times that I’d rather not go for our morning walk. More often than not, at some point along our journey, something happens to remind us of the beauty of God’s creation that surrounds us. All around us are reminders of the beauty (and bounty) of God’s creation! How do you experience God each new day? Are their reminders that may get lost in your daily routine – reminders of the One who gives life to all. Each day we’re reminded of the countless ways God surrounds us with love and grace. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” (Lamentations 3: 22-24) See you in church! News From The Pews THANK YOU Good Shepherd Family, Thank you for the beautiful service and care you extended our entire family for the service for Eleanor Rees Ashton. She loved her church for many, many years before she was unable to attend there anymore, so we were happy she was able to make her trip home to the Lord beneath her favorite stain glass window with family and friends surrounding her.

- George & Andrea Rees and Karen & Bill Winar

Good Shepherd Family, Thank you to everyone for their cards, gifts, visits, meals, and phone calls/emails to congratulate us on the birth of our daughter, Haleigh. We are very blessed to have such a kind and loving church family.

SPECIAL CHURCH CONFERENCE CALLED FOR AUGUST 16 We will have a special Church Conference on August 16 at 8:30 am. The purpose of this Church Conference is to deal with the various legal issues in putting all the church owned properties in the proper legal name of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Our new District Superintendent, Steve Bailey, has authorized Pastor Bob to preside over this meeting.

TRUSTEES NEWS Update on Church Renovations – Have you seen the new carpeting and the new stair treads? In continuing the renovations and upgrade to the church, rooms are being painted, and new stair treads and carpeting have been installed. In the basement, three rooms have new carpeting – including the choir room! And the stairwell by the Forestwood entrance has new rubber stair treads. Thanks to all who have helped paint, move furniture, and clean each of the rooms. Thanks to the Trustees for their oversight and help with this project. Most of all, thanks to all who continue to help support the Capital Funds Campaign. Without your ongoing support these improvements to the church would not be possible. Your Trustees are hard at work continuing making improvements and upgrades around the church!

GSUMC BOWLING LEAGUE NEWS By Jack Carpenter League Report for the 2013 – 2014 Season:

At the end of the season, the league donates any unused funds to various church needs. In the past, the league accumulated funds over a number of years to pay for the carpeting in the Sanctuary, Narthex, and hallway leading to the main entrance. For the past few years, the funds have been divided amongst a number of needs. This year the league members voted that the $700.00 overage be divided as follows:

Apportionments - $63.00 Missions - $182.00 Trustees Fund - $35.00 Parma Hunger Center - $126.00 Praise Team - $98.00 Staff Needs - $6.00 Parking Lot - $84.00 Restoration Project - $98.00 United Methodist Women - $7.00

The league will resume in September: We will soon be forming teams for next year. Consider joining us! The season is from September through May. The league bowls at Yorktown Lanes in Parma Heights from 6:30 – 9:00 pm every other Sunday with a few exceptions. All talent levels are welcome! Our average last year was 132. At the end of each season the league celebrates by having a banquet. For more information or to sign up, contact Allen Garrett (216-267-3376) or Jack Carpenter (440-237-4656). Enjoy fellowship and the challenge of increasing your average and winning a prize or two!

Mission Report: The West Virginia Service Project June 22 – 27, 2014 By Bev Schultz, Mission Coordinator Good Shepherd supported 13 youth and adults who traveled to McDowell County, West Virginia for this summer’s mission project coordinated by an organization called Experience Mission. This organization spreads the hope and love of Christ by building meaningful relationships in the community while doing repair work. During the work week, the team stayed in an old school building in Gary that housed 200 mission workers, the biggest group that Experience Mission hosted the entire summer. Poverty in McDowell County has traveled down through the generations since their economy and population began to decline in the 1950’s due to the waning coal industry. The median income of the area is $16,931.00 a year. Many people living in poverty have overlooked home repairs in order to have their most basic needs met.

Our team had the privilege of working with Danny Dickens and his fiancée, Kay (Pictured on page 6). This kind and caring couple lived in a house built in the late 1800’s during the coal mining boom. Their home was set in a very steep hill that had over 25 concrete steps leading down to the busy winding street below them, and another two flights of concrete steps that led up to a one-lane street at the back of their property. The railroad tracks across the street had coal cars traveling from the mines, with a dark stream meandering alongside. We were struck by the beauty of the steamy, tree-covered mountains and the gracious people who made us feel welcomed.

Our team spent our work week scraping, caulking, and painting this century home a striking blue color that we called, “Smurf Blue,” demolishing and rebuilding the floor of the large front porch, and working with the youth of the area in a program called Kids Club. After the evening meals, we had devotions, gathering with the other groups. The night that Stephen Carpenter and Leah Neczypor led the singing was a real highlight. I want to thank all the Good Shepherd crew members for their hard work and dedication. As most of you know, we begin our mission well in advance of the actual project, with many weeks of fundraising efforts. We are so grateful to all of you for your generous donations, your patronage of our events, and for your prayers for our safety and success. Without these, there would be no mission experience.
