5,836 Total SF | Completion: 1932 THE SHACK A unique facility overlooking the Winthrop Lake, the Shack is a lodge that has been used through the years for various student and faculty activities. Winthrop’s fifth president, Charles S. Davis, who served from 1959-73, enjoyed outings here so much that students called it “Charlie’s Château.” In the early 1960s the building was moved a few feet east of its original site and brick veneer was added. The facility was renovated in 2003 and is used not only for faculty and student events, but also as a conference and entertainment space for the general public. INTERESTING FEATURES Comfortable lodge setting that contains one operable floor with additional space available on an adjacent patio facing the lake. The surrounding green space may be used for games and activities. The second floor once was used for lodging “camp-style,” though unfortunately this floor is no longer operable.
