FIRST READING R: The first reading for the 21st
Sunday after Pentecost is written in chapter twenty nine of Jeremiah beginning at verse one.
Jeremiah 29:1,4-7 CEVJeremiah's letter to the exiles in Babylon
Jeremiah 29:1,4-71-2I had been left in Jerusalem when
King Nebuchadnezzar took many of the people of Jerusalem and Judah to Babylonia as prisoners, including King Jehoiachin, his mother, his officials, and the metal workers and others in Jerusalem who were skilled in making things.
Jeremiah 29:1,4-7So I wrote a letter to the prophets, the
priests, the leaders, and the rest of our people in Babylonia. 3I gave the letter to Elasah and Gemariah, two men that King Zedekiah of Judah was sending to Babylon to talk with Nebuchadnezzar.
Jeremiah 29:1,4-7In the letter, I wrote 4that the LORD All-
Powerful, the God of Israel, had said:
I had you taken from Jerusalem to Babylonia. Now I tell you 5to settle there and build houses. Plant gardens and eat what you grow in them.
Jeremiah 29:1,4-7Get married and have children, then
help your sons find wives and help your daughters find husbands, so they can have children as well. I want your numbers to grow, not to get smaller.
Jeremiah 29:1,4-77Pray for peace in Babylonia and work
hard to make it prosperous. The more successful that nation is, the better off you will be.
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 66
R: 1Tell everyone on this earth to shout praises to God!
C: 2Sing about his glorious name. Honour him with praises.
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV R: 3Say to God, "Everything you do is
fearsome, and your mighty power makes your enemies come crawling.
C: 4You are worshiped by everyone! We all sing praises to you."
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV R: 5Come and see the fearsome
things our God has done! C: 6When God made the sea dry up,
our people walked across, and because of him, we celebrated there.
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV R: 7His mighty power rules forever,
and nothing the nations do can be hidden from him. So don't turn against God.
C: 8All of you people, come praise our God!
Let his praises be heard.
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV R: 9God protects us from death and
keeps us steady. C: 10Our God, you tested us, just as
silver is tested. R: 11You trapped us in a net and gave
us heavy burdens.
Psalm 66:1-12 CEV C: 12You sent war chariots to crush
our skulls. We travelled through fire and through floods, but you brought us to a land of plenty.
C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.
SECOND READINGR: The second reading is written in
chapter two of 2nd Timothy beginning at verse eight.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 CEVA call to endurance
2 Timothy 2:8-15 8Keep your mind on Jesus Christ! He
was from the family of David and was raised from death, just as my good news says.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 9And because of this message, I am
locked up in jail and treated like a criminal.
But God's good news isn't locked in jail, 10and so I am willing to put up with anything.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 Then God's special people will be
saved. They will be given eternal glory because they belong to Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 11Here is a true message: "If we died
with Christ, we will live with him. 12If we don't give up, we will rule with him. If we deny that we know him, he will deny that he knows us. 13If we are not faithful, he will still be faithful. Christ cannot deny who he is."
14Don't let anyone forget these things.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 And with God as your witness, you
must warn them not to argue about words. These arguments don't help anyone. In fact, they ruin everyone who listens to them.
2 Timothy 2:8-15 15Do your best to win God's approval
as a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed and who teaches only the true message.
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
