The latest achievement was plac- ing first on Sunday, June 27 at Acres Raceway. C L&TL The Sparta Methodist Church will hold a chicken barbecue from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15. If the weather is nice, tables will be set in the church parking lot. In the event of rain, however, the dinner will be served in the church dining room. Among the Methodist women who have worked toward making the barbecue a success are (left to right) Mrs. William. H. DeHart, Mrs. Lee Moore, Mrs. Victor Ridgeway and Mrs. James Esther. New Joins Sparta Clinic ONE OF TWO INJURED SISTERS RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL One of the two little girls ser- iously injured in the automobile accident of June 19 near Sparta which claimed the life of their mother, Mrs. Betty Jean Stream, has been released from the hospital. The older sister's condition re- mains critical. Nancy -Kay Isberg, age 8, was released last week from Butterworth Hospital and is now able to be in a wheel chair part time. She would enjoy cards from some of her for- mer Sparta classmates and friends. New Driver Roy Titus Named i^rence w Aiiabcn hicense Center Justice of Peac Lawrence W. Allaben, D.V.M., will be associated with the Sparta Animal Clinic commencing Thurs- day, July 1. Dr. Allaban is a native of Grand Rapids. He is a 1957 graduate of East Grand Rapids High School and attended the University of Kentucky for two years where he was affili- ated with the Lambda ChiAlpha fra- ternity. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from Michigan State University in East Lansing and received Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from that university this month. He assis- ted at the Sparta Clinic last sum- mer. Dr. Allaben is an active mem- ber of the Kentree Polo Club in Ada. The newest member of the veter- inary staff at the Sparta Clinic is married to the former Susan Clark of Grand Rapids. Mrs. Allaben is a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School and attended Trinity College of Washington, D.C. She received a Bachelor of Scirnce degree in phy- iiterapy <»t t h e University of The Sparta Police Department has been designated as a site of a new drivers licensing station un- der the new program which greatly reduces the number of licensing sta- tions in Michigan. Police Chief Gene Heugel received official notification on Saturday that Sparta would be one of the stations in Kent County to issue licenses. Under the new system, a colored photograph of the licensee will be part of.every drivers license. The new program will take effect the latter part of July, Chief Heu- gel said, after the camera has been received and all examiners have been schooled in the new system. Michigan. The Allabens have moved to Spar- ta and are residing at 19 S. Union Street. Dr. Gerard Heytfounded the Spar- ta Animal Clinic in 1946 and Dr. Wayne Bannick joined the staff in 1957. Dr. Allaben's addition to the Sparta Clinic wUl give Sparta three full-time veterinarians. Roy A. Titus of 45 S. State St. has been appointed to fill the unex- pired term of Justice of the Peace in Sparta Township caused June 26 by the death of O.T. McCready. Mr. Titus was appointed to the post at the regular monthly meeting of the Sparta Township Board. The term will expire in 1967 when Mr. Titus will have to seek reelection. Lyle Anderson is the other Justice of the Peace in Sparta Township. Mr. Titus will maintain his of- fices at his home. Hours will be announced later when he is sworm into the office during the latter part of July. The new Justice of the Peace served as Sparta's Acting Post- master from October of 1961 until this past June. Before this he was on the Sparta Village Council from 1950 until 1961.
