twin events in the past few days have revealed the catapulted
status the social media now enjoy in our society. the boston marathon bombings and their aftermath last week and the hacked and tweeted hoax about a White house attack this week are a sobering reminder of the power wielded by a host of cyberspace social networks.
“monday’s bombings, the first major terrorist attack on American soil in the age of smartphones, twitter and Facebook, provided an opportunity for everyone to get involved. Within seconds of the first explosion, the internet was alive with the collective ideas and reactions of the masses” (South Bend Tribune 4-21-13). in an instant, pictures and video clips from bystanders in boston were circulating the internet. theories regarding the bombings

A special welcome to Pioneer this Sabbath. And to all the young scholars who have only next week’s finals between them and summer, we wish you three gifts: (1) that the hard disk between your ears will not crash between now and your final exam; (2) that your memory will be retentive and your spirit at peace as you write those examinations; and (3) that the grace and joy of Jesus will accompany you into a fulfilling summer journey. And hurry back in August—we’ll be waiting to welcome you again. (Seniors, our final word to you comes next Sabbath.) Visitors, enjoy a home-cooked meal following second service in the Commons.

As i have prayed for christians around the world who are being
persecuted and even put to death, i have wondered how it is possible to endure the pain. is it possible to even be burned to death and still remain faithful to christ?
let’s examine the experience of thomas hawkes who served as a page in the court of King edward vi in england. King edward was favorable to the protestant belief, but when he died, the religious and political scene changed and thomas hawkes went home to essex. he had married while at oxford and soon after arriving back in essex, a son was born. For three weeks he put off the baptism, not wanting a catholic baptism for his son. upon hearing this, the local magistrate arrested him and sent him to london. After the trial he and five others were sentenced to burn at the stake.
While in prison and waiting for several days, his friends were allowed to visit. Knowing that their lives could also be in danger for minor infractions, they asked if he would give a sign to show if it was possible for a person to “suffer the fire without despairing.” thomas promised to give them a sign and they mutually agreed that if the pain was bearable, he would give them a sign by lifting his hands to heaven.
Not long after this he was led out, tied to the stake, and was soon engulfed in flames. Without any cries of pain, he began to sink
downward and the people thought he was dead—when suddenly he lifted his hands high above his head, clapped three times and fell back down motionless. At this, the awe-struck rabble was speechless. but his friends remembered their agreement and were convinced that the power of faith is able to support believers through every trial (Foxe’s, The World’s Christian Martyrs, pp. 465-468). –Dennis Hollingsead

in another week the school year will be ending at the university and there
is only about a month left of school for our academy and elementary school. the time for collecting money forStudentAidendsinJune.Thelastreport showed giving to Student Aid to be behind what it should be if we are to meet our commitments to our students. please help us reach our goal so we do not need to cut the amount of funding we committed in faith.Yourgiftsmakeitpossibleforsomany impressionable young people to be in christian education. below is
a thank-you letter addressed to you from a student at Andrews Academy.
Dear PMC: I would like to express my gratitude by saying thank you for the financial aid that you have given me. It is through this aid that I am able to attend Andrews Academy. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to attend and feel doubly blessed with the financial aid [Student Aid]. There are so many things that I enjoy about Andrews Academy. The friendly and spiritual environment is what I enjoy most. I love how the students are friendly and the teachers godly. When I am at AA I feel loved, welcomed, and accepted.
When I go to college I hope to major in architecture and I know that AA will have prepared me well. I hope that I can use the knowledge and the love that I have learned from AA to help me to reach other people in need. I want to share with others the God that I have come to know here at AA. So THANK YOU VERY MUCH [emphasis the student’s] for the financial aid. May God keep blessing you just as you have blessed me. Sincerely, An Andrews Academy Student

on tuesday mornings the nursery classroom at pmc fills with the
sounds of children happily playing and moms chatting. the mommy and me program has been running for several years, providing a place for moms to make friends, find support, and just have a chance to socialize. At the same time their children also get to play with toys, practice social skills, and meet new friends. it’s fun to watch the children grow and learn new skills. many look forward to seeing their little friends each week. it is a blessing to be able to meet other moms and build friendships, especially if you are new to the area or don’t have moms in your neighborhood with whom to talk. the leadership team works hard to create
a fun play space and to plan songs, crafts, and story times. this year we’ve learned about frogs, space, colors, and many more topics!. each semester, dads and grandpas get to join in the fun at our mommy and me family potlucks. We are looking forward to having some outings this summer so we can stay connected.
please let the moms or grandmas in your circle of friends know about mommy and me. the program runs weekly from September to may with several Summer get-togethers. For more information about attending or about being part of the leadership team please contact [email protected]. –Rosemary Bailey

ruth murdoch elementary School is a place where children come to
school, attend various classes, eat their lunches, learn some life lessons, and play on the playground—and then they do it all over again the next day. When you think about it, it doesn’t seem very exciting or important. but once in a while our students and teachers will amaze us in a big way!
have you seen the video on Facebook of our 6th-graders doing a “cupping” performance at our latest school assembly? mrs. park saw a video of two girls performing this act and she thought that her students would get a kick out of learning the routine. With the help of her friend and fellow 6th-grade teacher, mrs. tatarchuk, they wrote words to a tune, let the students watch the cupping video, and that was all it took to create an rmeS sensation!
We posted the video on Facebook and it took off! people from around the world were sharing the video, commenting on it, and “liking” it. As of the time of this writing, over 2,300 people have seen the video. (it’s not
quite as big as “charlie bit my finger,” but impressive nevertheless!)
the best part about all of this is that the intent was to teach the students something new, let them have fun while spreading the word around the globe about christ’s love and soon return. And it all happened!
if you want to see the video, go to the ruth murdoch elementary School Facebook page (the one with the rmeS logo). –Wendy Keough

and potential bombers began to multiply like a rogue virus. innocent men and women were marked in photographs, in some cases identified by name and found guilty in the court of cyberspace. Some tout the investigative boost and assistance such internet sleuthing can provide for law enforcement officials, but the fact is cyberspace got it wrong in boston.
“‘this is one of the most alarming social media events of our time,’ said Siva vaidhyanathan, a media studies professor at the university of virginia. ‘We’re really good at uploading images and unleashing amateurs, but we’re not good with the social norms that would protect the innocent. . . . Sitting at our computers, it’s easy to forget that there are real people represented by these images and names. . . . And that’s when we see the arrogance of the crowd take over’” (ibid).
then just yesterday the Associated press twitter account was hacked, and a hoax message—“breaking: two explosions in the White house and barack obama is injured”—shot into cyberspace. in seconds traders on Wall Street got wind of the “explosions” and panicked. The dow Jones industrial Averageplummeted in a free-fall, “erasing nearly $200 billion off the broader market’s value” (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/04/23/hack-attack-on-associated-press-shows-vulnerable-media/2106985/). At best we now live in a world jittery with uncertainty. And this hoax has
“underscored a great vulnerability in our 24/7 faster-is-better newsenvironment: stories (even fake ones) travel at light speed and can in an instant upend an increasingly anxious public’s faith in business, government and the news media” (ibid).
Why should these two social media events matter to us? because they are a stunning reminder that a faceless public can quickly jettison judicial “due process” by trying, interrogating, and condemning the innocent in the court of public opinion. in a matter of hours, even minutes. And they can do so on the basis of evidence that is actually false or unsubstantiated. how rapidly, how wrongly the faceless ones can render judgment!
No wonder revelation 13 predicts that on the heels of some catastrophic event this nation and the world (and the tolerating public within them) will try, interrogate, condemn, and even execute the innocent in the dragon’s furious endgame. Will the faceless public of social media be his pawn? given the last few days, wouldn’t you be surprised if they weren’t?

today’s Worship in music uses text by connecticut-born author
Sylvanus phelps (1816-1895). composer robert lowry wrote to phelps, “it is worth living seventy years even if nothing comes of it but one such hymn as [“Something for thee”]. happy is the man who can produce one song which the world will keep on singing after its author shall have passed away. may the
tuneful harp preserve its strings for many a long year yet, and the last note reach us only when it is time for the singer to take his place in the heavenly choir.” Soprano Juliepenner is professor of music at Southern Adventist university. She will sing soprano solos this evening at the howard performing Arts center in Felix mendelssohn’s epic oratorio, Elijah.
remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and who-ever sows generously will also reap generously.
each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for god loves a cheerful giver.
And god is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
as it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also sup-ply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.
You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanks-giving to god.

here at pmc we are blessed to be able to run a large-scale media
ministry each and every week. this is possible in no small part to the army of dedicated volunteers who donate their time on a weekly basis. electronic media is an important part of worship here at pioneer. From hearing the speaker via the p.A. system, to seeing images on the screen, technology is at the heart of everything we do. making this technology work requires a team of dedicated volunteers—15 each week.
can you picture yourself minister-ing through technology? this sum-mer, we are looking for new volun-teers to join the media team. No experience is needed, but a passion for excellence in ministry is required. if you would like to consider be-ing a camera operator, helping with the audio system, or creating power point contact:
