February 25, 2018 - The Second Sunday of Lent

Dear Friends,

Most of us appreciate what Lent is all about. A few years ago, Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI described

Lent in a pre-Lenten audience. He said, “Lent is like a long ‘retreat’ during which we can turn back into

ourselves and listen to the voice of God, in order to defeat the temptations of the Evil One. It is a period of

spiritual ‘combat’ that we must experience alongside Jesus, not with pride and presumption, but using the arms

of faith: prayer, listening to the word of God, and penance. In this way we will be able to celebrate Easter in

truth, ready to renew the promises of our Baptism.”

The Word of God speaks to us from a variety of perspectives in the readings for this Second Sunday of

Lent. God calls Abraham to go forth on an unknown journey, requiring great and unquestionable faith. It is

God’s plan we should seek during this Lenten season. For us to seek and define what God wants us to do, how

He wants us to serve, and how He wishes us to be good stewards using our gifts should be the focus of what

we are doing during Lent.

St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans is a good counsel for us during our Lenten efforts. As he asks a series

of questions, we hear only Paul, not how his audience might respond. His second question is key, fo he tells us

that God, who did not spare His own Son, will give us everything along with Christ. Since God handed over

His own Son for all of us, God will, logically, give us everything else “along with Him.” If we focus on that,

we are well on the path to both holiness and a good Lent.

Our Gospel Reading for today gives us Mark’s version of the Transfiguration. This is one of the most

momentous events in Christ’s life, and just as it was almost impossible for Peter to fully comprehend what he

was witnessing, it is equally complicated for us to understand. During Lent, this gives us a small glimpse into

what the glory will be, what the key to our faith should be. Yet it is so connected to Jesus’ mission and our

salvation. It shows us the life to come. It reminds us that there is a splendor and a glory to that life that is

beyond our understanding and certainly our imaginations. This should provide us with motivation to dedicate

ourselves anew to our own transformation that needs to occur during this Lenten period.

Pope Francis has put it quite simply, but at the heart of what he said is our understanding and goal to be

sought by the Transfiguration. The Holy Father said, quite simply, “Listen to Jesus and follow Him. That is the

message of the Transfiguration.”

Hoops Mania Fundraiser Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit our teens who will attend the Youth Conference at Franciscan University in Steubenville this summer. HOOPS MANIA is based on College Basketball’s national championship tournament. Tickets cost $10 each, and each ticket holder can win $1,000 OR MORE based on the total points scored by the basketball teams printed on the back of their sweepstakes game card(s). Each game card is randomly assigned 8 teams (2 from each region) that will play in the National Championship tournament. To play the game, those who purchase ticket(s) simply add up the points scored by their 8 teams throughout the tournament. Tickets are on sale in the Saint John Neumann Room after Mass in February and are also in the parish office.

The Scrutinies Parishioners attending Noon Mass on 3/4, 5:00 Mass on 3/10, and 9:00 Mass on 3/18 (the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent) will share time with the RCIA group as they prepare to be welcomed into the Church. The readings focus on the themes of baptism and repentance. The Gospel passages for these three Sundays include the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5-42), the man born blind (John 9:1-41), and the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). These are the “scrutiny” Sundays. The scrutinies celebrate conversion and offer our Elect an opportunity for introspection along with time for prayer, reflection, repentance, and the exorcisms (a series of blessings conferred to strengthen them against the power of temptation, sin, and Satan; to lead them ever closer to Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and to deepen their decision and desire to love God above all else). The Elect are asked to ponder the Word of God in their hearts, to know Christ who came to save the lost, to confess themselves to be sinners, to reject all that is displeasing to God, to ask the Holy Spirit to help them overcome their weaknesses, to learn how to please God, and to put their hope in Christ, finding peace and holiness in Him. The parish community is also asked at this time to seek continued conversion of heart so the weak may be strengthened, the broken restored, the lost found, and the found redeemed.

ST. JOSEPH ELDER CARE St. Joseph Church Elder Care Program provides care management services for older parishioners and their caregivers. The mission of the program is to help seniors meet their needs and enjoy wellbeing and high quality of life.

Some of the services may include securing in-home assistance, long term care planning, help with utilizing benefits and resources, and addressing crisis situations. Geriatric Care Manager will meet with you at home or at the parish rectory. Services are free and confidential.

40 Days for Life Ash Wednesday was the beginning of Lent and also the start of the Spring campaign for 40 Days for Life (40 DFL). 40 DFL is a time of prayer, fasting and standing vigil at abortion clinics throughout the United States and other countries to bring awareness of the killing of babies in the womb. The Planned Parenthood Clinic in West Chester performs abortions at its Wayne & Market Streets location every Friday. The Spring campaign will end on Palm Sunday, March 25. St. Joseph Parish has participated in 40 DFL since it became a national event in 2007. The Gospel story of the transfiguration of Jesus holds many lessons; the most prominent is the transformation of Jesus from simply being perceived as a wise and gifted prophet to the one who has fulfilled the sacred traditions of the Mosaic law and the hope of the prophets, the Messiah, the Christ. The Lord calls His stewards to participate in His redemptive activity. Heeding this call requires transformation, being willing to renounce patterns of behavior that draw us away from God. In this coming week of Lent, let us pray for the grace to be transformed, so that by our goodness and generosity, we may walk more authentically in the footsteps of Jesus.
